FOREIGN TRADE UNIVERSITY FINAL TERM EXAM

FACULTY OF BUSINESS ENGLISH Advanced Reading — TAN207E

Semester 1 Academic year: 2021- 2022
Full-time Class: K60 CTTT-QTKD

Date: 09.01.2022 Time : 1.30 p.m.- 2.40 p.m.

Duration: 70 minutes (not including paper
distribution time)

1. Identify the key assumptions in the following two arguments. (3 pts)

1. It’s not at all necessary to give James ten- dollar allowance because his
brother always
got just five dollars a week. (1 point)

2. Jack doesn’t need to spend any time on lesson preparation, because he is an

experienced
teacher. (1 point)

3. Over the last year we've seen a lot of evidence that the education to employment
link is
broken. Today more than half of US college graduates are looking for work, college
cost
has risen by 40% over the last ten years, and college graduates now have more than
a trillion
dollars of debt. I mentioned the mismatch between education and business late last
year,
and it appears that the problem continues to grow. It does beg the big question: do
young
people really need a higher education degree to succeed? Bill Gates dropped out of
college
and it certainly didn't hold him back. (1 point)

Name the fallacies in the reasoning of the following arguments (if any) and explain
why you find the argument(s) fallacious (3 pts)

1.Bill Clinton’s proposal to curb cigarette advertising was a bad idea. Whether to
smoke
or not is a personal decision, one the government shouldn’t interfere in. Besides,
Clinton’s record--from his failure at reforming health insurance to his appointment
for
Surgeon General--was poor. (1 point)

2 For a better college learning environment, all classes should begin in the
afternoon. Most
students try to schedule afternoon or evening classes anyway; you rarely hear of a
student
who is upset at being closed out of the 8 a.m. section of a class. Also, experts
say that
students who are alert learn more and learn more quickly. For example, at Southern
State
University, one group of students took an 8 a.m. psychology course from Dr. Miller
while
another group took the same course from Dr. Miller at 2 p.m. The students in the
afternoon
course had slightly higher averages than those in the morning class. Changing the
starting
time for classes at universities to the afternoon will help students. (1 point)
3. Automobiles cause more deaths than handguns do. If you oppose handguns on the
ground
that doing so would save lives of the innocent, you'll soon find yourself wanting
to outlaw
the automobile. (1 point)

III- Identify the reasoning structure of the following argument. Then, evaluate the
writer’s conclusion by using the critical reading skills that you have learnt. (4
points)

As a former student at Hinds Community College, I can honestly tell you that it is
a
wonderful place to go to college, for a whole range of reasons. One obvious reason
is that
it is more affordable than many other colleges. Most of us do not have a lot of
extra money
to throw around, so attending a college that allows you not to have such high
student loans
to repay is important. Students can get a great education and not be so burdened.
With
lower loan payments to make, you will be more able to live the kind of life you
strive for.
Another good reason is the class size. At Hinds, the student-faculty ratio is 17:1,
a much
better proportion of students to faculty than at many other local colleges. This
ratio makes
getting individual attention easier than at a larger place. Here, you will not find
yourself in
a huge class run by a professor having no opportunity to interact with students.
With smaller
classes, faculty can work one-on-one with students to make sure that they succeed.
This
point leads me to the most important reason to attend Hinds: Students receive an
excellent,
high-quality education. Some people say that community colleges aren’t as good as
four-
year colleges and universities, but I am living proof that Hinds Community College
provides a first-rate educational experience. Students at Hinds are diverse, with
ACT scores
ranging from low to very high. The professors at Hinds are great teachers because
teaching
is their primary focus. At many other four-year colleges, many professors need to
split their
time between research and teaching. Here, they don’t need to do research and
teaching is
the most important faculty responsibility. The instructors at Hinds go above and
beyond in
their efforts to help students learn and succeed in college. When I transferred
from Hinds
to Delta State, I was able to make the academic transition easily because of all
the support
and attention available to all Hinds students. When you add it all up — low cost,
good ratio
of teachers to students, and devotion to academic excellence — Hinds is a great
choice for
college. It set me on the path to success and a great life.
