poetry

Assessment

Daily Grammar
Group work
Journal

Lesson Procedure

 Wait for students to complete daily grammar, then have one complete the focus on the board (5)
 Remind students of the work that they did with “My Papa’s Waltz” the day before – word choice is
important. Pass out a half sheet of paper with a selection of various words listed on it. Have them write
their own sentence using the words, then go around the class and have every one read their sentence.
Show them that we all had the same words to choose from and we all made different sentences (10-15)
 Pass out the copies of the poem to the students
 Have the class read “The Wreck of the Hesperus”
 I will then read it, stopping to make sure that we understand significant parts
 Listen to the poem on CD (10-15)
 The students will then identify poetic devices on their copy of the poem, as well as underline words that
are important the poem’s meaning/mood
 Discuss as a group and add to personal copies if not already marked (5-10)
 Journal: Did you like it? Why or why not? Was it the metaphors, similes, personification? Rhythm or
rhyme? (5)
