Pythagoras Biography

Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher, born around 570 BC on
the island of Samos. He is best known for the Pythagorean theorem, which states that in a
right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the
squares of the lengths of the other two sides. However, his contributions extended beyond
mathematics.
Pythagoras founded a philosophical and religious movement known as Pythagoreanism.
This movement emphasized the importance of mathematics, music, and the concept of
numbers as fundamental elements of the universe. Pythagoras and his followers believed in
the idea of the harmony of the spheres, suggesting that celestial bodies produce harmonious
sounds as they move through the cosmos.
He also had a profound influence on various areas, including music theory, cosmology,
and spirituality. The Pythagoreans believed in reincarnation and the purification of the soul
through philosophical contemplation and ethical living. Pythagoras left behind no written
records, and much of what is known about him comes from later sources and the writings of
his followers.
Pythagoras' teachings and ideas had a lasting impact on the development of Western
philosophy, mathematics, and science.
