of PCU and Emergency to channel A of PCU). Each supply is transmitted to two
relays in the Power Control Unit which is controlled by the EEC.
The EEC commands relays in the PCU to connect each of the igniter systems to
either the Emergency or Normal aircraft 115VAC power supplies. The EEC
detects faults in these components by cycling through the possible
combinations of igniter systems and aircraft power supplies during
successive engine starts.

IGNITION POWER SUPPLY - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_________________________________________________

1. _______
General
Each engine has two ignition systems. System A is controlled by the EEC
channel A and system B is controlled by the EEC channel B

A. Ignition Power Supply

The ignition power supply includes two ignition units. The top ignitio
unit is system B and the bottom ignition unit is system A. Each unit has
a case assembly and an ignition exciter. Two inputs of 115 volts 400Hz AC
power are supplied by the aircraft electrical system (emergency power is
supplied to channel A of PCU and normal power is supplied to channel B of
PCU). Each supply is transmitted to two relays in the PCU which is
controlled by the EEC.
The EEC can set the relays in the PCU to connect each of the igniter
systems to the Emergency or Normal Aircraft 115VAC power supply (Ref.
73-21-00). An electrical harness then transmits the supply to the
ignition units.

B. Ignition Unit
The ignition exciter changes 115 volts 400Hz AC power from the aircraft
to a high voltage electrical output. The high voltage output is
transmitted to an igniter plug through the distribution system (Ref.
74-21-00).

Description
The ignition exciter is a capacitive discharge circuit. The exciter changes
115 volts 400Hz AC power to an output voltage of between 2.7 and 3.0 K
volts.
Energy is stored in the ignition unit at between 8.0 and 12.0 joules. This
energy is released by the exciter to give a spark to the igniter plug at a
minimum rate of 60 sparks for each minute.

4. Power

A. The Ignition Lead

The ignition lead connects the ignition unit to the igniter plug. The
ignition lead has a contact button and a connector at each of the two
ends.
The ignition lead has an inner wire conductor. This gives the current
routing from the ignition unit to the igniter plug. The inner wire
conductor has an insulation cover. The inner wire conductor and
insulation cover have an outer conductor. This outer conductor gives the
current return routing from the igniter plug body back to the ignition
unit case. The inner wire conductor and the outer wire conductor are
closed by a flexible tube and a wire cover.
The leads are approximately 15 feet long and designed so that the inner
cable can be replaced after removal from the engine.

B. The Igniter Plug
The igniter plug is of the surface discharge type. It is used to ignite
the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber.
The igniter plug has a body and a ground electrode. The igniter plug also
has a center wire with a center electrode at the tip. The center wire is
sealed with glass and has insulation along its length.
The space between the center electrode and the ground electrode is filled
with a semi-conductor material. The igniter plug has a contact button
which touches a contact button in the ignition lead.

5. Operation/control
________________________________
and Indicating
When the ignition system is energized, the ignition lead transmits
electrical current from the ignition unit to the igniter plug. The
electrical current flows through the inner wire conductor of the ignition
lead to the contact button in the igniter plug.
The current flows through the center wire and the center electrode of the
igniter plug. The current then flows through the semi-conductor material to
the ground electrode. This current produces a magnetic field which ionizes
the gas near the igniter tip. This gives a low resistance routing for the
energy in the ignition unit and a pulse of energy occurs.
The energy pulse gives a high energy spark from the surface of the center
electrode to the outer electrode. The electrical current flows through the
igniter plug body and to the outer conductor of the ignition lead. It then
flows through the outer conductor of the ignition lead to the ignition unit
case.

(3) Set the applicable GAGE-PROTRUSION, IGNITER PLUG to the igniter plug
depth.

(a) If attached, remove the adjustment washer(s) from the igniter

plug.

(b) Put the igniter plug against the protrusion gage.

(c) Slide the locating plate up to the body. Make sure the body
touches the tip of the igniter plug.

(d) Make sure the igniter plug is correctly positioned against the
protrusion gage; then use a depth gage to measure dimension X.

(e) Record the dimension X.

(f) Remove the igniter plug from the protrusion gage.

(4) Install the GAGE - PROTRUSION,IGNITER PLUG in the engine

CAUTION : YOU MUST DO THE IMMERSION DEPTH CHECK/SET PROCEDURE, FOR

_______
THE IGNITER PLUGS, WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. YOU MUST WAIT
FOR A MINIMUM TIME OF THREE HOURS, AFTER ENGINE SHUT-DOWN
BEFORE YOU DO THE IMMERSION DEPTH CHECK/SET PROCEDURE. IF
YOU DO THE IMMERSION DEPTH CHECK/SET PROCEDURE ON A WARM
ENGINE, THE IGNITER PLUG IMMERSION DEPTH WILL BE
INCORRECTLY SET AND COULD CAUSE ENGINE START PROBLEMS.

NOTE : If the immersion depth/set procedure is used as part of fault

____
isolation procedures; the wait time after engine shut-down can
be decreased to one and a half hours. The immersion depth
check must then be done again, at the earliest opportunity,
when the engine is cold.

(a) Move the locking collar, the locating plate and the body up
against the indicator.

CAUTION : REMOVE/INSTALL THE PROTRUSION GAGE CAREFULLY TO PREVENT

_______
DAMAGE TO THE COMBUSTION LINER.

1
_ Engage the threads of the protrusion gage in the applicable
igniter plug location hole then turn the gage clockwise to
install it. Make sure the indicator notch points to the rear
of the engine.

engine.

CAUTION : USE THE PROTRUSION GAGE CAREFULLY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO

_______
THE COMBUSTION LINER.

1
_ Carefully pull the indicator up until the probe foot touches
the combustion liner.

(e) To hold the probe in position, lightly tighten the locking

collar.

(f) Use a vernier depth gage to measure dimension X again. Take the
initial dimension X from the new dimension X, the result is the
thickness of adjustment washers necessary to get the correct
igniter immersion.

(g) The igniter plug and the adjustment washers can now be installed
in the applicable igniter plug location hole.

NOTE : A tolerance of plus or minus 0.20mm can be applied when

____
you select adjustment washers to get the necessary
thickness.Use the minimum number of washers to get as near
as possible to the calculated immersion depth.

(5) Remove the GAGE - PROTRUSION, IGNITER PLUG.

CAUTION : REMOVE/INSTALL THE PROTRUSION GAGE CAREFULLY TO PREVENT

_______
DAMAGE TO THE COMBUSTION LINER.

(a) Loosen the locking collar, then push the indicator down until the
probe foot does not touch the combustion liner.

(b) Turn the indicator until the notch points to the rear of the
engine.

(c) Turn the protrusion gage counterclockwise to remove it from the

applicable igniter plug location hole.

(2) NORM position
This position is selected by the pilot at the end of the starting
sequence. In this position, with engines running, the EEC
automatically selects continuous ignition under the following
condition:
- in-flight flameout detected

(3) IGN START position

This position is selected for:
- normal autostart sequence
- normal manual start sequence
- manual control of continuous ignition (engines running).

B. ENG MASTER Control Panel 125VU

(Ref. Fig. 002)
On this panel are located:
- two ENG/MASTER switches
- two ENG/FIRE/FAULT annunciators.

(1) ENG/MASTER switch

There is an engine master switch for each engine.

(a) With ENG/MASTER switch in OFF position

- the HP fuel shut off valve (S0V) is closed
- the engine is shutdown.
This position of the ENG/MASTER switch overrides any FADEC
function.

(b) Placing ENG/MASTER switch in ON position enables

- normal autostart sequence
- normal manual start sequence
- normal engine wet motoring sequence
- normal operation.

(2) ENG/FIRE/FAULT annunciator

These annunciators have two legends:
- FAULT legend
- FIRE legend.

(a) FAULT legends

An amber annunciator FAULT legend dedicated to each engine is
supplied by the EIVMU when one of these conditions exists:
- a starting procedure was aborted during an autostart sequence
- a disagreement occurs between the HP fuel shut off valve and
the control.

the FDU (Fire Detection Unit) when a fire occurs.

C. ENG MAN START Section of Control Panel 212VU

(Ref. Fig. 002)
It is located on the ceiling in the cockpit.
There are two pushbutton switches, one for each engine.
Each pushbutton switch serves for:
- manual starting sequence
- engine dry motoring sequence.

5. Operation/Control
________________________________
and Indicating
The EEC system provides control for:
- starting, either an autostart or a manual start mode can be selected
- engine motoring
- ignition
- shutdown.
The engine status page appears as soon as the EEC enters a start or motoring
sequence.

A. Normal Autostart Sequence

(Ref. Fig. 005, 006)
In the autostart mode, engine starting control of the ignition, fuel
metering valve and Starter Control Valve (SCV), are under the full
authority of the EEC. It can be selected with valid or invalid EIVMU
data, either on ground or in-flight. The EEC enters the automatic start
mode when the engine is not running, if either of the following
conditions is met:
- valid EIVMU data: ENG START selector switch is set to IGN/START and the
ENG MASTER switch is set to ON
- invalid EIVMU data: alternate start/ignition discrete active when the
master switch is ON and the selector switch in IGN/START, and the
hardwired ENG MASTER switch discrete is ON.

(1) Ground autostart sequence
When the autostart sequence logic is active on the ground, the EEC
initiates the automatic starting sequence to control:
- the opening of the SCV (N3<10%)
- the energization of one ignition system and opening of the HP fuel
SOV at (N3> 25% or Max Motoring Speed reached and EGT< 150 DEG.C
(302.00 DEG.F)) (the igniters are EEC sequenced A, A, B, B, A, A
...) selects alternatively one igniter system only at each start.
The second ignitor system may be energized in case of delayed or no
light condition)
- the closing sequence of the SCV and de-energization of the ignition
system at approximately N3>50%.
The EEC is entirely responsible for the engine starting sequence. It
provides protections on:
- the engine EGT limit
- any engine abnormal start
- starter reengagement.
(Ref. Fig. 007)
The EEC can abort or recover the start sequence following an abnormal
start. Fault annunciation is provided to the Flight Warning Computer
(FWC), which generates warning messages to the pilots. These features
are available while in the start region up to idle. In case of
failure of the SCV actuation device, the EEC logic is compatible with
a manual actuation of the SCV without any additional signal.

(2) Air autostart sequence

When the autostart sequence logic is active in-flight, the EEC
initiates the automatic starting sequence to control:
- the opening of the SCV (N3<30%)
- the excitation of both ignition systems and the opening of the HP
fuel (N3>25% or Max Motoring Speed reached and EGT< 150 DEG.C
(302.00 DEG.F)) or 30 seconds.
- the closing of the SCV at N3>50%
- the cutting off of the ignition at N3>50%.
In the event of an abnormal start, the EEC provides fault
annunciation to the FWC, which generates warning messages for pilots
action. The EEC has no authority to abort the starting sequence
in-flight. The EEC identifies the windmilling or starter assisted air
start conditions according to the flight environmental parameters
(Mach, altitude), and the engine parameters, when N3 speed is at or
above 7%.
(Ref. Fig. 008)
In order to guard against the effects of some failures which could
jeopardize the in-flight restart, the ignition and fuel are selected
ON by the EEC in the following conditions:
- engine N3 speed is at or above 7% when start commanded.
- the SCV fails to open, as detected as no increase in N3 speed.

- the minimum pressurization/ignition speed is not reached within the
allotted time due to insufficent starter air pressure.

(3) Autostart interruption

(Ref. Fig. 009)
The autostart sequence can be interrupted only by placing the
ENG/MASTER switch back to OFF position. This leads to:
- closure of the SCV via the EEC
- ignition cut-off
- closure of the HP fuel SOV directly as well as by the EEC.
Turning the ENG START selector switch to NORM or CRANK while in
autostart sequence has no effect.

B. Normal Manual Start Sequence

(Ref. Fig. 010)
In the manual start sequence, engine starting control is under limited
authority of the EEC. fuel HPSOV, FMV and ignition systems are controlled
by the crew using a conventional procedure with only limited EEC system
interaction. The manual start sequence can be selected with valid EIVMU
data only. In the event of an abnormal start, the EEC provides fault
annunciation to the FWC, which generates warning messages for pilots
action.
(Ref. Fig. 011)
It provides protection up to idle. In flight, or in ground, the EEC has
no authority to abort a manual starting operation.

(1) Manual start - SCV command

The pilot sets the ENG START selector switch to IGN/START then sets
the ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch in the ON position. As soon as
these two actions are accomplished, the EEC controls the opening of
the SCV if the engine is not running (there is no priority order for
these two actions inside the EEC). The SCV closure is automatically
controlled by the EEC at the appropriate starter cutout speed
(N3>50%). The EEC provides protection for the starter maximum speed
reengagement.

(2) Manual start - Fuel HPSOV and ignition command

The fuel HPSOV and both ignition systems are controlled when the
ENG/MASTER switch is set from OFF to ON position. The EEC
automatically controls the ignition de-energization at the (on
ground) corresponding with the starter cutout speed (N3>50%). When
engine is at idle, the crew selects the ENG/MAN START push-button
switch to OFF and the ENG START selector switch to NORM.

(3) Manual start interruption
(Ref. Fig. 012, 013)
Placing the ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch in the OFF position
before placing the ENG/MASTER switch in the ON position leads to
closure of the SCV, and then abortion of the manual starting
sequence. After the ENG/MASTER switch is placed in the ON position,
placing the ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch in the OFF position has
no effect. The man start sequence can be interrupted at any time by
placing the ENG/MASTER switch in the OFF position.
This leads to:
- SCV closure via the EEC
- ignition de-energization
- HP fuel SOV closure via the EEC.

(4) Quick Relight

To quick restart the engine in flight, after an engine flame out,
taking advantage of high N3 during spool dow. The FADEC selects HPSOV
open and ignitors when MASTER LEVER is turn ON after being OFF for
less than 30 seconds, in flight, with N3>10%.

C. Engine Motoring Sequence

The FADEC system provides capability of control for dry and wet motoring
procedures. Both dry and wet motoring procedures are provided with valid
EIVMU data. Only dry motoring is possible without EIVMU valid data.

(1) Dry motoring

(Ref. Fig. 014)
If the engine is not running, the EEC opens the SCV when the ENG
START selector switch is placed in the CRANK position and the ENG/MAN
START pushbutton switch is placed in the ON position. (The order
sequence of these actions is indifferent). Normal dry motoring can be
interrupted at any time by placing the ENG/MAN START pushbutton
switch in the OFF position.

(2) Wet motoring

(Ref. Fig. 015)
A wet motoring sequence can be initiated (opening of the fuel HPSOV)
following a dry motoring procedure by placing the ENG/MASTER switch
in the ON position. Placing the ENG/MASTER switch back in the OFF
position leads to a dry motoring. The wet motoring sequence can be
aborted by placing the ENG/MAN START pushbutton switch in the OFF
position (closure of the SCV and fuel HPSOV) or by placing the ENG
START selector switch in the NORM or IGN/START position.

D. Ignition
(Ref. Fig. 016)

(1) Start ignition

For each ground autostart sequence, the EEC selects each ignition
system alternatively A, A, B, B, A, A .... The second ignition system
can be energized for a delayed or no light condition or after stall.
During a manual start or in-flight autostart, the EEC selects both
ignition systems simultaneously.

(2) Continuous ignition

A manual selection of the continuous ignition by the EEC is
accomplished when the engine is running and:
- if data are received by the EIVMU:
. on ground, from the ENG START selector switch being turned from
NORM to IGN/START
. in-flight, from the ENG START selector switch being in the
IGN/START position (i.e. the ENG START selector switch needs not to
be turned).
- if data are not received by the EIVMU, when the alternate
start/ignition discrete input is active.
In addition, the EEC automatically selects dual igniter continuous
ignition when anu of the following condition exist:
- In flight flameout detected and when the MASTER LEVER is
inadvertently selected OFF then ON by the crew.

IGNITION STARTING AND CONTINUOUS RELIGHT - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________________________________________

1. _______
General
The ignition system is used to:
- start the engine when the aircraft is on the ground
- start the engine when the aircraft is airborne
- keep the engine started during some flight conditions and bad weather.

2. Component
__________________
Location
Each engine has two ignition systems. These systems can operate together or
independently. Each system has an ignition power supply (Ref. 74-11-00) and
an ignition distribution system (Ref. 74-21-00).
The ignition systems are controlled by the units that follow:
- the aircraft mounted Engine Interface and Vibration Monitoring Unit
(EIVMU)
- the Engine Electronic Controller (EEC) (Ref. 73-21-00).

3. Operation/Control
________________________________
and Indicating
The engine ignition system can be operated as follows:
- as part of the automatic engine start sequence
- as part of the alternative (manual) engine start sequence
- as part of the in-flight starting sequence
- as an autorelight function
- as a continuous ignition function.
The two ignition systems can be operated together or independently. The
operation of one of the ignition systems is single ignition. The operation
of the two systems together is dual ignition. The EEC will set single
ignition for automatic ground starts. Dual ignition will be set by the EEC
for manual starts, automatic in-flight starts, autorelight and continuous
ignition.
Autostart can be used to start the engines on the ground or in flight. When
an autostart selection is made the EEC will control the engine start
sequence. When autostart is not used the engines can be started manually.

A. Automatic Ground Start

(1) The EEC alternates power supply and ignition to avoid hidden failures
on the total system. The sequence is the following:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| START | POWER | IGNITION |
| NUMBER | SUPPLY | 1st ATTEMPT | 2nd ATTEMPT |
|-----------|--------------|--------------------------------------------------|
| 1 | ENER | A | AB |
| 2 | NORM | A | AB |
| 3 | ENER | B | AB |
| 4 | NORM | B | AB |
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2) The automatic ground start description is given in 74-30-00.

(3) When TGT is above 100 deg.C, both ignition systems are selected by
EEC at the first attempt.

B. Alternative (Manual) Ground Start

(1) The alternative (manual) ground start procedure is set through the
EEC and permits the flight crew at the applicable time to make the
selections that follow:
- the EEC opens the starter control valve to supply sufficient air to
initially turn the engine
- the EEC opens the PRSOV (in the FMU)
- the EEC energizes the igniters for fuel ignition to occur.

(2) The alternative (manual) ground start description is given in

74-30-00.

C. In-Flight Starts

(1) For in-flight starts (automatic, alternative or quick relight) the

EEC always operates the two igniters.

D. Autorelight

(1) The EEC autorelight function energizes the two igniters (for
continuous ignition) to give protection from an engine flame-out
condition at idle.

EFF :

ALL 74-31-00

Page 2
Jan 01/04

MSR

 TRENT 700

SERIES ENGINES

(2) The autorelight function is armed when the ENG MASTER switch is ON
and the engine has satisfactorily started. The EEC then monitors the
rate of change of N3 at idle and compares this to a minimum datum
calculated from P30. If a flame-out condition is found the igniters
are continuously energized until the condition is corrected and for
10 seconds more (to make sure of satisfactory ignition).

(3) The EEC transmits the operation of the autorelight function for
display at the cockpit.

E. Continuous Ignition

(1) Continuous ignition will be automatically set by the EEC if the

conditions that follow occur:

(a) If the MASTER switch is accidentally moved to the OFF position

during engine operation, continuous ignition will be supplied for
10 seconds. Continuous ignition will only be supplied if N3 is
above 50 percent and the MASTER switch is moved back to the ON
position.

(b) If the EEC finds the ENG START selector switch has moved from
NORM to IGN START position during engine operation, continuous
ignition will be supplied.
