Now the lapbook is completed and the student has a portfolio keepsake
of what they have learned and a set of interactive minibooks and games
for continuous learning in the home or classroom.
What color paper is best to use for printing out the minibooks?
Colored paper stands out very nicely if that is available.
However, as a classroom teacher, I use white paper so my
students can use markers and crayons to create lapbooks that are
individualized and not “cookie-cutter.” This is also why I have
created the lapbooks in only black and white (not to mention it
would be insane to print out 35 copies of everything on a color
printer). And you will be amazed at the creativity of your students
when it comes to producing a lapbook that is uniquely theirs.
My only suggestion for printing with colored paper would be
when creating the matching cards. Printing out one group
(pictures or words) in a different color besides white will ensure
that students pick one picture and one word and not two
pictures or two words. However, if colored paper is not on hand,
students can mark one group of cards on the back with a
highlighter to distinguish between the two different groups. You
may also want to consider printing in card stock so the image or
print will not show through the other side.
This is a lot of cutting! I’m not sure my students have the fine
motor skills needed yet for lapbooking.
This is a valid point! Although lapbooking is great for
developing fine motor skills, sometimes the cutting and pasting
can be overwhelming and nearly impossible in the early grades.
If you have a parent volunteer, this would be a great task to
give him/her. Consider having the volunteer go ahead and precut
items and paste together pockets. Leave students with only the
larger items to cut.

Objectives:
Students will identify vocabulary of pictures associated with the four seasons of the year.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut the cards out on the solid lines. Glue on the blank side. Fold in half on the dotted lines.

both pockets. Save the "Chips" pocket
for activity 7.
Activity Suggestions:
1. Have students individually practice reading and familiarizing themselves with the vocabulary. If they
know a card well, they place it in the "Very Good" pocket. If they do not know it well, they place it in
the "Try Again" pocket to practice again at a later time.
2. In pairs or small groups, have students play "Flashcard Face‐Off." To play, students place the cards
with the words face down. Taking turns, they choose a card, name it, and check the back to see if they
are correct. If they are, they keep the card. If not, they return it to the pile. Students continue taking
turns until all the cards are gone. The student with the most cards wins.
Activity Suggestions:
Beginners ‐ Write the name of their favorite season and draw pictures to illustrate it.
Intermediate ‐ Write their favorite season in a complete sentence, "My favorite season is summer."
Advanced ‐ Write their favorite season in a complete sentence and explain why.
Objectives:
Students will sort pictures according to what season and vocabulary they correspond.

Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut out the snowman, the sun, the flower, and the leaves on the solid lines, each as one piece. Fold
all flaps inward on the dotted lines. Open flaps again. (The extra graphics are optional decorations.)
2. Cut out all the pictures on the dotted lines (p. 21). Sort pictures according to the correct season. Paste
pictures in the correct flapbook by the correct vocabulary.
Activity Suggestions:
1. In pairs or small groups, students place a stack of flashcards on the table with the words face‐up. Taking
turns, students choose a card and guess which season belongs with the word on their card. Then, they check
by opening the flaps on the corresponding season flapbook (already pasted in their lapbooks). If they are
correct, they keep the card. If not, they place the card at the bottom of the stack. Once all cards are taken,
the student with the most cards wins.
Objectives:
Students will write and/or illustrate their favorite thing about each season.
Assembly Instructions:
1.Cut out the matchbook on the solid lines as one piece.
Be sure to cut the four solid vertical lines to create four
flaps. Fold the four flaps upward with the words on the
outside. Fold the title downward with the title on the
outside, closing the book like a matchbook.
Activity Suggestions:
1. Write the name and/or illustrate their favorite thing about each of the four seasons. Share with a
partner.
Activity 5: Matching
Page(s): 22‐26
Objectives:
Students will match and read vocabulary associated with the seasons.
Assembly Instructions:
1.**It is preferable to print out the matching words and cards in card stock, if possible, so they will not show
through the other side. If the pictures or words are printed in a color other than white, that will distinguish
one from the other so students do not pick up two words or two pictures. If colored card stock is not
available, students can mark the back of the word cards or pictures cards with a highlighter.
2. Cut out the picture cards and the word cards on the solid lines.
3. Cut out the pockets and assemble them (see directions for the flashcards in activity 1).
Activity Suggestions:
1. In pairs or small groups, have students first pair the cards correctly with matching words and pictures.
Students then should divide the pairs into two groups. Students choose a group and play "matching."
After all cards are matched, then they may play with the other group of paired cards.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut out the title page and each tab page on the solid lines. Stack the pages in order starting with
winter. Make sure the title page is on top. Staple the pages together at the top edge.
Activity Suggestions:
1. Students should write their name on the title page. Students should then illustrate each tree
according to the season label at the bottom of the tree.
Activity 7: Bingo
Page(s): 29‐33, 16
Objectives:
Students will identify and match vocabulary associated with the seasons.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut out the six bingo cards. Cut out the Bingo card pocket and assemble it (follow instructions in
Activity 1).
2. If you need Bingo chips, cut out the bingo squares. Cut out the chips envelope and assemble
it the same way you would a mailing envelope. Store the chips in the envelope, and the envelope can be
pasted on top of the Bingo card pocket.
Chips Chips
3. Students will use the matching word cards as the Bingo calling cards.
Activity Suggestions:
1. In small or whole groups, students play bingo.
Activity Suggestions:
1. Students illustrate each season on the front page with vocabulary and pictures.
2. Students may use markers, colored pencils, crayons, ribbon, construction paper, etc. to decorate
their lapbooks.
3. To celebrate the creation of their lapbooks, have students separate into groups and have fun with the
different activities and games within their lapbooks.
