ACTIVITY #8

Search for best practices in teaching geometry to middle/high school students?

1. Enumerate the materials, methods and strategies used?

*Materials used in teaching geometry to middle/ high school students:

a. Measuring equipment like tape measures, rulers, compass, protractors

b. Graphing board

c. Geometric Applications (Ex. Geogebra, Geometry pad, desmos, Khan Academy)

*Methods used in teaching geometry to middle/ high school students:

a) Drill Method – It is a method that ensures the acquisition of knowledge by practicing and repeating the concept
again and again.
b) Play Method – Play method of teaching is a method that focuses on making children learn through enjoyable
activities and play.
c) Display method – in this method, the teacher is used to explain the concept using concrete objects.
d) 3-D Learning - 3-D does not imply that you have to use a computer. You simply have to give them things they
can touch. For example, have them take out their phones and use the built in GPS systems to find the 'distance'
from their house to the school. Then lead them into using the distance formula. Now, obviously I just used a
pretty simple example. However, every lesson in Geometry has a real world application.
e) Group Learning - You might think that putting children together in groups is a nuisance but this method has the
best rate success among types of interactive learning. Just make sure that you divide the children into groups
that will play off of their abilities. Pair a good student with a weak student. The Peer Effect is a healthy way to
learn.
f) Interactive Assessments - When it’s time to test your students, try to be more creative than a pencil and paper.
Try to make the assessments better by giving them real problems to solve.

2. Discuss the relationship among geometry and other branches of mathematics.

*Relationship between Geometry and Algebra

Algebra and geometry are intimately related. Our first encounter with the merger of algebra and geometry is
typically seen in the 2D Cartesian coordinate system, where algebraic equations in one or two variables can be
interpreted as lines, curves, and shapes in the plane. This relationship runs much deeper, however, and a considerable
portion of modern mathematics concerns this relationship.

- Algebra uses the concept of geometry to have a presentation in order to come up with an equation and formulas.

*Relationship between Geometry and Trigonometry

We know that geometry deals with different shapes, sizes, and positions of different shapes. But trigonometry is
the subset of geometry, that deals with the properties of one of the shapes in geometry called “Triangle”. Concepts of
geometry are being used in trigonometry in order to have a representation for us visualize the given problem and to
come up with a correct answer.
