1. What is Slump test?

Concrete Slump test (ASTM C143) is a fast, low-cost test for determining the workability and suitability
of concrete in different construction activities. The test determines the proportions of the ingredients
that is used in preparing the concrete aiming to consistency and workability.

2. What are Needed to perform slump test?

The materials and equipment that will be needing in performing a slump test are slump cone, tamping
rod, ruler, concrete mixture, and trowel. Certain materials or equipment have their specific dimensions,
such as slump cone has 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches on top, bottom, height respectively. The
tamping rod has 24 inches in length and 16mm in diameter and last, the ruler must be 12 inches in
length.

3. How is slump test being performed?

First, Put the slump cone in a rigid, smooth, and non-absorbent flat surface. Next, we fill the
mould by 1/3 of the mixed concrete per layer (3 Layer). After Filling the first layer, a tamping rod may be
used to tamp the concrete inside the mould by 25 times. This process of filling and tamping the concrete
inside the mould shall be done until it is filled by 3 layers. An excess concrete may appear as you fully
filled the mold, the tamping rod should be used to remove it. Carefully lift the slump cone to obtain and
observe the result of the slump test. The result of the slump may be obtained by measuring the
difference between the height of the mould, with tamping rod on top as reference, and concrete.

4. What are the four possible result for slump test and what do each tell?

The slump that we obtain varies into 4 types: true, zero, collapsed, and shear. True Slump is the
one used in construction, zero slump, indicates low water-cement ratio and is used in road construction,
collapsed slump, has high workability and water-cement ratio, which is not suitable or appropriate for
construction, and last, the shear slump which indicates that the result is incomplete and must be
retested.
