Course Facilitator JOHN PAUL C. VALLES

Course Code and Title SC 1: Teaching Science in the Elementary Grades (Biology and Chemistry)
Course Prerequisite None
Course Description The course includes understanding of spiraling basic science concept and
application of science inquiry in chemistry and biology and the use of teaching
strategies in elementary science, development of instructional material and
assessment. Content topics in chemistry include properties and structure of matter
and changes that matter undergo. In biology the content topics include parts and
functions of animals and plants, heredity: inheritance and variation, Biodiversity
and evolution and ecosystem.
Course Objectives At the end of this course, the prospective elementary teachers should be able to:
1. acquire knowledge, skills and strategies in teaching science in Elementary
grades as shown in their individual prepared lesson plan for different grade
levels;
2. actualize their understanding by conducting demonstration teaching using
their prepared lesson plan, using different teaching and learning strategies
in teaching science; and
3. internalize Science teaching by evaluating and reflecting on their prepared
and demonstrated lesson plan.
