5 Greetings and sharing today’s lesson objectives.
15
Get students to make a spider diagram or mind map with their name in the inner circle. The legs can be use
to explore their different aspects of their identity (e.g. familial roles, social roles, occupational roles). This
allows them to appreciate that identity is a many-layered construct.
15 Ask students to describe their speech patterns in these various roles. They should provide some
examples of the kinds of things they say to others when in a particular role.
Ask students to reflect on their childhood before looking at the material on Piaget in the
coursebook. Ask them whether they have any memories of formative times in their life when a
part of their identity was established or came to the fore, or where their self-esteem or self-
worth was put to the test. They might suggest memories of liking or disliking
something/someone such as toys, books or people; memories around their name (being
mispronounced, or being laughed at) or their age (being perceived as younger or older than they
actually were); memories of behaving in a particular way (good or bad); memories of unjust
treatment or feeling that people weren’t being fair (racism, sexism, cultural snobbery).

30 A short story, a piece of life writing/memoir or a poem could be used as stimulus material for
this.
