The Tragedy of the Commons

Guide Questions:
1. Briefly compare the subject place/location as seen in the Digicast report compared to
the three recent photos.
The Digicast report has shown the real beauty of the place and how beautiful mother
nature is. Just a year ago, the place already had its road constructed and only a few tourists,
other than the residents of the said area pass by. Indeed, the scenery was very captivating and
is very beautiful. There’s peace and quiet, it almost feels like nature is talking to you. However,
on the three recent photos being shown, a lot of people bombarded the area. Just looking at the
number of vehicles, you can already imagine the air pollution in the area. Also, considering the
number of people, and the fact that you cannot see any garbage cans or trash bins in the area,
most people would only throw their garbage on the side. Seeing how crowded the place has
been is indeed good for the place’s tourism but it is not that good for the environment especially
when we talk about littering.
2. Why is the area (Hermit Hill and adjacent area including the nearby stretch of road) a
"commons" area?
It is considered a “commons” area because it’s not owned by anybody however, it is
shared by everyone especially by the residents of the said place. It might also be because of the
fact that the place is located far from where people usually live that’s why the area is not owned
by anybody.
3. What is/are the tragedy (if any), in relation to the concept of Tragedy of the
Commons?
The phrase "tragedy of the commons" describes a situation in which people who have
access to a shared resource, also known as a common, act selfishly and ultimately decrease
the resource. Seeing the photos, because of overcrowding, the people and vehicles in the photo
are creating various kinds of pollutions from the smoke of the vehicles to the garbage left by
people.
4. Imagine and briefly describe a near-future scenario if no government intervention will
come to this place.
If in the near future wherein no government intervention will be done to this place, I can see
a polluted area. Garbages will be everywhere and also, this place which is supposed to be rich
in natural beauty, might actually be filled with residential houses, or even worse, being
urbanized. This will only ruin the place in its own nature which will be a very unfortunate fall not
just for the City of Binalbagan but for the whole island itself.
5. Recommend possible solutions to the LGUs (Barangay Biao/City of Binalbagan) to
return order to the place as in the Digicast report.
Firstly, it is better to start with reminding people of garbage disposal when visiting the place.
People should learn how to dispose their garbage properly and it starts with discipline. There
should be a fine when people disobey because this is the only way that people would obey it.
Also, the government should preserve the area, making sure that there will be lesser pollution
for the place.
