CHANGES OF STATES OF MATTER

 A substance can change from one physical state to another. Each change in the state of
matter has a specific name.
 Changes of states are reversible ( ) that is, the substance undergoing a change of
state can be returned to its original state.

How can change of state happen?

 If the temperature of a substance changes, then that substance can change of state.

Change of state from solid to liquid (melting)

 Melting is the process of changing a substance from a solid into a liquid. For example,
ice into liquid water.
 When a solid substance is heated, its particles begin to move faster and faster. Soon
particles have enough energy to break free of their orderly structure and start moving
around more easily. The substance then becomes a liquid.

Change of state from liquid to gas (evaporation).

 Evaporation is the process of changing a substance from a liquid into a gas. For example,
liquid water into steam.
 When a liquid substance is heated, its particles begin to move faster. If the particles gain
enough energy, the particles near the surface break away. These particles escape the
liquid and enter the air as gas.

Change of state from solid to gas (sublimation)

 Sublimation is the process of changing a substance from a solid into a gas. For example,
dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) to gaseous carbon dioxide.
 When a solid substance is heated, its particles begin to move faster. If the particles gain
enough energy and enters the air as gas.
