INDUSTRY 101
The film industry is among the most
lucrative and successful industries in
entertainment. Its beginning dates
back to the late 19th century — when
silent motion pictures had to be stored
on compact film reels. Since then, the
medium has evolved with technological
advancements in how we view them
and how we make them. From jumpy
projections on a wall to taking in epics
on mobile devices, film has stretched the
boundaries of the human imagination
beyond what was ever thought to be
possible.

OVERVIEW 5 SPECIAL OFFER

The film industry in the United States is the oldest in the world.
In its early history, the industry was controlled by a handful of
studios concentrated in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los
Angeles, California. This time is now known as the Golden
Age of Hollywood. The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studio
dominated during the 1930s, and actors were locked into
contracts and unable to work with competing studios. The
Walt Disney Company also became prominent during this time
with its innovations in animation. It was a common practice
of the time for studios to have full or partial ownership in
theaters where films were shown, causing a conflict of interest.
The traditional studio system collapsed by the 1960s as film
productions faced complications due to antitrust lawsuits and
directors like Alfred Hitchcock fighting for more creative control.

Now film is global, with billion-dollar markets in North America,

China, and India. With that type of economic growth, the
business side of film has had to change drastically to keep pace.
There are also more people now involved in making a film, with
jobs delegated between pre-production, production, and post-
production. As of 2022, the film industry in North America is
valued at $25.8 billion and supports 423,000 jobs.
