THE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENT THAT A DIABETIC PERSON SHOULD FOLLOW.

What is a diabetic?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce
enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a
hormone that regulates blood sugar.

When having vegetables have 4-6 servings of vegetables for example: Having a bowl of salad
including – lettuce, tomato, cucumber or have ½ of a cup of cooked vegetables.

When having fruit have a serving of 3-5 serving including: 1 medium sized fruit
(apple/orange/pear/banana) or 2 small fruits (plum/kiwi/mandarin) or small fruits (6
strawberries/10 grapes/16 raspberries)

When having dairy products have 3-4 servings: Choose reduced-fat or low-fat varieties. Choose
low-fat milk and yogurt 200ml of milk or 125g of low-fat yogurt or 25g of soft/hard cheese.

When having carbohydrates try and have low Gi and wholemeal carbs as we digest these foods
slower which mean our blood sugar will stay at a healthier range and our body will not have as
regular blood sugar spikes.

When having carbohydrates have 2-4 servings: Choose low Gi and wholemeal products :2 thin slices
of wholemeal bread or ½ of a cup of unsweetened muesli and oats (can add your fruits servings with
oats) or 1 cup of high fibre and vitamin filled wholemeal cereal (BOKOMO-fibre plus is a good
example) or 1 cup of wholemeal pasta,rice or 1 cup of cous -cous. 2/3 small and medium potatoes

When having protein have 2-3 servings try and have lean meat, poultry (without skin) and fish. Have
75-100g of lamb/beef/pork or poultry the serving should be the size of consumer’s hand. Or have
125g of fish/soya. Or 1 cup of beans/lentils or 2 medium-large eggs or 35g of unsalted nuts.

When having fats and oils have very small serving sparingly: These will tend to be in your everyday
meals. You should have 10g of butter with 2 slices of bread and when cooking use 1 teaspoon.

Drink at minimum 8 glasses of water

Foods to avoid -fizzy and sugary drinks, saturated fats, sugar biscuits , Cakes
