SOTERIOLOGY ASSIGNMENT SUBMITTED BY ANTONY AINOBUSHOBOROZI

1. Explain the doctrine of salvation as you have understood it in the study (20) (KJV Scriptural reference)

Salvation is the free gift & complete work of God purposely set out to rescue, deliver & redeem man
from the ruin, doom, penalty and power of sin and bestow upon him the riches of his grace,
righteousness, eternal life, provision for abundant life now and eternal glory. Man receives this free gift
by faith.

(Eph 2:8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. From
this verse, Salvation is totally a free gift of God (to man). It is free from human works. Jonah 2:9b tells us
that Salvation is of God. God has freely justified man, by His grace through the redemptive work of Jesus
Christ. (Rom 3:24)

In Gen 3, we are given account of the fall of man and how sin entered into the world. As a result of this
fall, Man was separated from God (Gen3:9), Man became guilty before God (Gen3:10-11), Man was
cursed (Gen3:14-19), he was now under bondage (corruption &depravity) (Rom3:10-18) and a candidate
for the penalty of sin which is death (Gen3:3 & Rom6:23a).

In this fallen state, the scripture regarded man to be dead in his sins (Col2:13), had ordinances that were
contrary to him (Col2:14), he was under a curse (Gal3:10), there was a barrier of separation between
this man and God (Eph2:14-16) and he had completely fallen short (missed the mark) of the Glory of
God (Rom3:23). (Rom 5:12) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and
so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Sin was imputed on all mankind and because of
this, all mankind was regarded to have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23).

Man was entirely in a helpless state (Rom7:24) and in need of a deliverer and God set out a salvation
plan to reconcile man back to Himself. (Eph 2:4-5) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love
wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by
grace ye are saved;) and (Rom 5:6, 8)

Salvation is the eternal plan of the Triune God; THE FATHER chose us in Christ before the foundation of
the world (Eph1:4), predestinated us unto the adoption of His own children by His son Jesus Christ
(Eph1:5), loved us with His great love and riches of His mercy (Eph2:4), all to the praise of the glory of
His grace; THE SON has redeemed us through His blood (Eph1:7), we obtained an inheritance in
Him(Eph1:11); and THE HOLY SPIRIT is our seal unto the day of redemption(Eph1:13 & Eph4:30)

We are given a summary of the salvation plan of God in (Rom 8:29-30) For whom he did foreknow, he
also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among
many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he
also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

In the Salvation scheme of God, out of the riches of His mercy, love and grace, God set out His own
purpose according to His divine election and not according to the works of man (2Tim1:9, Eph9:11,
Rom8:29&33) because man was already helpless (Rom7:24).

He foreknew man (2Tim2:19, 1Pet1:2), and predestinated man unto the adoption of His own children by
Jesus Christ in accordance with the purpose of his will and pleasure (Eph1:5). As a result of this, man
would be conformed to the image of his Son. Henceforth God called us forth in his Son. (Tit 3:4-7) But

after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and
renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; That being
justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

His plan was to reconcile man to himself; (2Co 5:18-19) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us
to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in
Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed
unto us the word of reconciliation. This was fully achieved in the finished work of Christ. However, there
is a part of man to reconcile himself to God by believing in the provision that Christ has done (2Cor5:20).

After God had reconciled man to himself, He justified him by Faith (Rom5:1) hence the man in Christ
became the righteousness of God (2Cor5:21) and now man has peace with God through Jesus Christ
(Rom5:1). As a result of justification, we are saved from the penalty of sin by the washing of rebirth
(blood of Jesus Christ) (Eph2:13, Rom3:25), we are saved from the power of sin through the renewing of
the Holy Ghost within us (Gal5:16, Rom8:2&13).

A believer in Christ is therefore sanctified (1Cor 6:11) and is one with Christ - the sanctifier (Heb2:11), he
is a child of God, an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ (Rom8:16-17). A believer in Christ is
continually sanctified because it is the will of God (1Thes4:3) and God is committed to sanctify this man
wholly through his truth, that is His word (John17:17)

(Rom 6:22) But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto
holiness, and the end everlasting life. Our final state of salvation shall be our final redemption which is
glorification. This will be the ultimate and physical, mental, and spiritual state of all believers in Christ
(Rom8:22-23, 1Cor15:41-55, 1Thes4:13-18). We shall be like Christ, with glorified bodies, we shall bear
the image of the heavenly, supernaturally enriched and empowered to serve God (1cor15:42-43)

The benefits of salvation include; justification (righteousness), new identity in Christ (citizenship, chosen
generation, royal priesthood, peculiar people, adoption as sons), an inheritance (completeness in Christ,
possessing all spiritual blessings, an incorruptible inheritance in heaven), strength to live a holy life
(freedom from the law and power of sin), the indwelling of the God head, and sanctification.

It is the will of God to have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1Tim2:4,
2Pet3:9) and the grace of God that brings this salvation has appeared to all men (Tit2:11). God has made
this sufficient provision of Salvation and it is now upon all mankind to partake of this free gift.

This salvation is passed on to man through the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation
(Rom1:16) to everyone that believes. This gospel is received by faith (believing with personal trust and
confident reliance) in what Christ Jesus has done for us (Rom10:8-10, Rom3:22). This faith comes by
hearing the gospel of Christ - the word of God – the Holy Scriptures which are able to give us
understanding and make us wise unto this salvation (2Tim3:15). Man is convicted by the Holy Spirit to
believe this truth. The Holy Spirit convicts man of sin (its guilt), his lack of righteousness and of
judgement (John16:8)

2. Explain salvation in light of (50)

a) Justification

Justification is God's act of removing the guilt and penalty of sin while at the same time making a sinner
righteous through Christ's atoning sacrifice.

The Greek translation for Justification is Dikaioma (derived from Dikaioo) which means to render just or
innocent, to declare and treat as righteous when in the essence the object may be just the opposite.
Thus the justified sinner is not without personal sins but he is still viewed and treated as righteous by
God because of the gift of Christ’s righteousness by imputation. The believer stands in the righteousness
of Jesus Christ and his sins are not imputed to him (Heb8:12). Not only are his sins forgiven but Christ’s
perfect righteousness has been added to the account of the believer. The believer was not released on
bail out of the prison of sin, neither is he viewed as guilty but he is the righteousness of God in Christ
who was made sin on our behalf.

Rom5:4-19; through Adam’s disobedience, sin was imputed on mankind and death as a result of sin
spread to all mankind. But God clearly showed and proved his own love for man that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us and we are now justified by Christ’s blood(Rom5:8-10). The effect of Christ's
saving work is that now all who believe are made righteous and accepted by God as righteous.

Justification is of faith that it might be by grace (Rom4:16). Christ was raised again for our justification
that being justified freely by his grace, we should be made heirs according to Jesus the hope of eternal
life (Tit3:7)

(Rom 3:22, 24) Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them
that believe: for there is no difference: Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is
in Christ Jesus: Justification is a free gift of God to man and man is justified by faith without the deeds of
the Law (Rom3:28, Phil3:7-9)

As a result of justification, the believer has received forgiveness of the penalty of sin (Rom3:25), he is
justified from all things, he has received eternal life, he is no longer under condemnation (Rom8:1), he
has received the righteousness of God in Christ (2Cor5:21) and divine favor (Rom5:1-11).

b) Regeneration

Regeneration is the supernatural act of God whereby the spiritual and eternal life of the Son, the Lord
Jesus Christ, is imparted to the believer through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Greek Word for “Regeneration” is paliggenesia (from palin, “again, once more,” and genesis,
“nativity, birth”) and means “a new birth, a renewal, rebirth, or regeneration.”

It is used in Matthew 19:28 to describe the refurbished conditions that will exist during the millennial
reign of Christ. But in Titus 3:5 the word is used of the bestowal of spiritual and eternal life to the
believer on the basis of God’s mercy.

Regeneration is that part of the reconciling work of Christ which deals with man’s spiritual death. It
deals with man’s need of spiritual life or the new birth (Eph. 2:1-4). By nature, men are spiritually dead

children of wrath, sons of disobedience, under the curse (Gal3:10) and therefore they were in need of a
new birth. (Joh 3:3) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (Joh 1:12-13) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the
will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. This clearly speaks of new spiritual birth by which
man becomes a child of God.

Regeneration is the direct work of the Holy Spirit (John3:6, Tit3:5), but the Spirit is sent by the Father
and the Son as a result of work of Christ on the cross.

As a result of regeneration, a believer receives spiritual and eternal life (1John5:11), a new nature and
capacity to fellowship with God (2Pet1:3-4, John3:6)

c) Adoption

Adoption is the placement of a believer upon salvation into the position of sonship in respect to God
(Adoption of children/ sons).

Adoption comes after regeneration whereby regeneration gives a believer a new nature as a child of
God whereas adoption gives the believer his position and identity as a son of God (Rom8:15-23)

(Gal 4:4-5) But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made
under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

(Eph 1:5) Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to
the good pleasure of his will

God adopted us as his children not because we were worthy of adoption nor was he seeking for comfort
due to being childless (He already had Jesus Christ His beloved son); but He did it according to the good
pleasure of His will

As a result of adoption, all believers received the Spirit that produces sonship (Rom8:15) and are heirs of
God and joint heirs with Christ (Rom8:17) of the eternal inheritance and throne (Rev3:21)

d) Propitiation

(1Jn 4:10) Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.

Propitiation is the doctrine or truth that the person and death of Jesus Christ appeased, turned away
God’s wrath, satisfied His holiness, and so met God’s righteous demands that the sinner can be
reconciled into God’s holy presence.

Propitiation is a major work in the salvation plan of God because of the wrath of God that was revealed
against all unrighteousness and all ungodliness (Rom1:18). God (out of his abundant love and mercy)
offered his son Jesus Christ as a cleansing and life-giving sacrifice of atonement and reconciliation to
wash away all sin on man (1John1:7).

The nature of God is perfect Holiness, perfect righteousness and perfect justice and because of these
attributes, he cannot have fellowship with anything less than his own perfect righteousness (Isa 59:2).
God is light and in him there is no darkness (1John1:6) and darkness cannot have fellowship with
darkness (2Cor6:14)

God’s righteousness is satisfied by the person of Christ and His life. Jesus Christ was without sin and
lived in perfect righteousness and harmony with the will of God and God was well pleased in his beloved
son (Matt3:17) and so Christ was not only qualified to be our sin bearer, but he had successfully satisfied
the holiness of God and dealt away with man’s sin (1John2:1-2, Heb2:17).

God’s justice, which requires judgment for sin, is likewise satisfied by the death of Christ as the
substitutionary payment for our sin (Rom. 3:25-26). As our substitute He bore our penalty. This satisfied
the requirements of God’s justice.

Propitiation is only possible through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. Every man that believes in the
sacrifice of the Son of God receives eternal life and is cleansed from all his unrighteousness and the
righteousness of God is imputed on that believer making him capable of having fellowship with the
perfect righteousness of God.

As a result of propitiation, God is justified in forgiving sin and He is justified in bestowing righteousness
upon the believer (Rom3:25-26)

e) Righteousness

Righteousness is God’s work of grace in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ where man is put in the right
standing with God. God is light and in him there is no darkness neither can he fellowship with darkness.
For there to be fellowship between the perfect righteous God and the sinner, God had to impute on
man, the righteousness of his Son Jesus Christ who became the propitiation of the sins of man.

(Php 3:9) And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is
through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith

Jesus Christ lived a perfectly righteous life on earth and for our sake, God made Christ to be sin who
knew no sin, so that in and through Him we might be endued with, viewed as being in and examples of
the righteousness of God. Hence a believer in Christ is approved and accepted and is in right relationship
with the perfectly righteous God.

Righteousness is an attribute imputed unto every person that believes in the finished work of Christ
Jesus (Rom3:22)

f) Reconciliation

Reconciliation is the complete work of God in Christ by which man is brought from the place of
alienation, enmity to harmony and peace with God (Rom5:1). Reconciliation is a work which has its
source in the love, holiness, goodness, and grace of God. It is all by His doing that we come to be in
Christ Jesus, the place of peace with God (1 Cor. 1:30-31).

The Greek translation for reconciliation is; (a) Katallasso, the verb, and Katallage, the noun form –
“which means to restore to divine favor, change from enmity or disharmony to friendship and
harmony,” or “to reconcile” (Rom5:10, 2Cor5:18-19); (b) Apokatallasso – which means to reconcile
completely, fully and irrevocably (Eph2:16, Col1:20-21)

(Rom 5:10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much
more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

(2Co 5:18-19) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath
given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto
himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Reconciliation in light of salvation, (katallasso and apokatallasso) refers to a one-way kind of

reconciliation, one accomplished by one person. It is important to distinguish it from another usage of
the word reconciliation (Diallasso) in Matt5:24, that refers to a two-way reconciliation – one dependent
upon the work of both parties.

But the reference scriptures, Rom5:10 & 2 Cor5:18-19, are clear about the choice of words; God was in
Christ reconciling the world unto himself. This implies that salvation is 100% a work accomplished by
God through His son Jesus Christ. Man’s part is now to receive of this provision and be reconciled to God
(2Cor5:20) as the recipients of a relationship of peace and harmony brought about by God.

Through reconciliation, Man has peace with God (Rom5:1), Christ is our peace having completely
demolished and destroyed the middle wall of partition between us & God, he even abolished the
enmity caused by the Law (which he annulled) and thus creating a new quality of humanity (Eph2:14-
15). All believers in Christ are ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors of Christ. Since Christ died for
us, we are each obliged to live not for ourselves, but for the Lord and be His representatives in a world
that is alienated from God (2Cor5:15-21)

g) Redemption

Redemption is part of the salvation work of God by which God through his Son Jesus Christ fully paid the
price of man’s sin (Heb9:12) and redeemed man from the curse of the law (Gal3:13) and will further
effect this in full with the redemption of our bodies (Rom8:22-23, Eph1:7,Col1:14)

Redemption specifically deals with the problem of man’s sin (Gal3:13, Eph1:7) whereby man is viewed in
scripture as imprisoned and enslaved because of sin (Gal3:22, 4:3)

(Col 1:13-14) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the
kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

(1Ti 2:5-6) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who
gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Jesus Christ is the agent of redemption, he gave
himself a ransom and purchased our redemption.

The Results of Redemption include: forgiveness of sin (Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14), deliverance from bondage to
sin and the Law (Gal. 3:13), provides the basis for imputation and justification (Rom. 3:24; 2 Cor. 5:9),
provides the basis for our adoption as sons of God (Gal. 4:5-6), provides the basis for an eternal
inheritance (Heb. 9:15), and provides the basis for capacity to glorify God (1 Cor. 6:20).

3) Explain deliverance in light of salvation (10)

(Col 1:13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom
of his dear Son:

Deliverance is the salvation and redemptive work of God through Christ made available to the believer.

Deliverance is the movement from the kingdom of darkness and all its powers (the power and penalty of
sin) into the kingdom of God and His dear son (Col1:13). When a sinner gets born again, the spiritual
transformation in his life is what we call deliverance. According to Col1:13, God has already
accomplished that work and man’s part is to receive this by faith.

Through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, he destroyed him that had the power of death, that
is the devil and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing
over them in it (Col 2:15). Christ abolished death and in exchange he brought life and immortality to
light through the gospel (2Tim1:10)

Forgiveness of sin is deliverance in itself but it is not complete until the believer has been transferred
into the kingdom of Christ. Luke4:18 tells us that deliverance is a preaching to the captives (those under
the bondage of sin)

There is also the present state of salvation which deals with the present deliverance over the reigning
power of sin or the carnal nature of believers; this is accomplished through the ministry of the
indwelling Spirit (Rom8:2, Phil1:19, 2Cor3:18). There is the final future state of Salvation, the deliverance
of all believers in Christ into ultimate glorification (1John3:2)

4) Explain the present state of man in sin (10)

Man in Sin is in a state of guilt and is separated from God by his sin. The scripture has concluded all men
to have sinned and come short of the Glory of God (Rom3:23). Man in sin is therefore not worthy of
having fellowship with the perfect righteousness of God.

Rom7:7-13 give us the state of man in sin, man was under the ordinances of the law which were
contrary to him and sin exercises its power through the law (1Cor15:56) and transgression of the law is
sin against God (1John3:4) and so man in sin is in a lost state.

August 1, 2019 8
SOTERIOLOGY ASSIGNMENT SUBMITTED BY ANTONY AINOBUSHOBOROZI

Rom 3:10-18, give us another account of the man in sin that he is living in unrighteousness, he is not
capable of doing good, he is living in deceit, his mouth is filled with cursing and bitterness, he is swift to
shed blood, destruction and misery is his way of life, he is not peaceful and there is no fear of God
before his eyes. This man is dead in his trespasses and sin and is not capable of pleasing God in any
sense, he is a slave to sin.

Just like Paul cried out; (Rom 7:24) O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of
this death? Man in sin is helpless and urgently in need of a savior.

5) Give a full detailed explanation on the plan of God for salvation and the role of the father, the son and
the spirit (10)

After the fall of man in Gen3, in verse 15, God promised redemption to man and that the seed of man
would bruise the seed of the serpent. In his own time God called a man, Abraham and made a covenant
with Abraham to make him a great nation and in the seed of Abraham all the earth would receive
salvation (Acts3:25). (Act 13:23) of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel
a Savior, Jesus.

Rom9:7-8 clearly says that the promised seed was born not out of flesh (Isaac) but the children of God
are those born of the promise (Christ). This seed promised in Abraham was Christ (Gal3:19) and if any
man believes by faith in Christ, he is Christ’s and are heirs of the salvation which God promised man in
the beginning.

Believers are born again not of corruptible seed (flesh) but of incorruptible, by the word of God (Christ)
(1Pet1:23)

(Gal 4:4-7) But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made
under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

This verse is clear on the role of the Father, the Son and the Spirit in the salvation plan.

The FATHER because of His love for fallen man - who had been created in His image, after His likeness,
for a purpose (Genesis 1:26-28) “gave His only begotten Son (1 Corinthians 15:3), that whoever believes
in Him (Acts 16:31) should not perish but have everlasting life” (John3:16)

The role of the SON JESUS CHRIST was to mediate between the Father and man, Christ gave himself as a
ransom (1Tim2:5-6) and he died for the sins of man according to the scriptures (1Cor15:3), on his own
self he bare the sins of man in his own body on the cross so that everyman who was previously dead in
sin should live unto righteousness (1Pet2:24). Christ is our propitiation (1John2:1-2) and redeemer
(Col1:13-14)

The SPIRIT convicts and convinces man of sin, of their state of their righteousness with God and of
judgement (John16:8-10). He guides the sinful man into the truth of God’s word and the Spirit does the
work of renewing man into a new nature worthy of having fellowship with the perfect righteousness of
God. The Spirit further enables the believer to mortify (put to death) the deeds of the flesh and so the

Spirit is the power within the believer making him capable to resist the power of sin (Rom8:2, 13). The
Spirit is also our seal unto the day of redemption (Eph1:13, 4:30)

Eternal salvation is by grace (that which God is able to do completely apart from human merit) through
faith (through believing on God’s Son) (Ephesians 2:8, 9), and it is based entirely upon the finished work
of Christ (John 19:30). Nothing that man has done, is presently doing, or will ever do can have anything
to do with his eternal destiny. Man can do no more than receive by faith that which has already been
done on his behalf.
