P.E. 5 Basic Skills in Basketball
The game became established fairly quickly and grew very popular as the 20th
century progressed, first in America by the National Basketball Association in 1946, then
in other parts of the world.
1. SHOOTING- defined as putting the ball in the basket to score a point. Types of shoots
includes: layups, dunks, midrange two-point shots, three-pointers, and free throws.
2. PASSING- it is when a player throws the ball to another player on his team. If that pass
led to a basket, it is called assist. Passes could also be in the major forms: Chest pass,
Bounce pass, and Overhead pass/Baseball pass.
3. DRIBBLING- dribbling or ball handling is a method of bouncing the ball up and down
the floor with one hand to advance it. Dribbling with two hands more than once is a
violation (double dribble).
5. DEFENSE- the ability of a player to hinder the opposing team to shoot or score a point.
Two forms:
Stealing- taking the ball from an offensive player while either dribbling or passing
it to a teammate.
Blocking- swats the ball or covering the trajectory of the ball in an attempt to shoot
by an offensive player.
