5 BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL

HISTORY OF BASKETBALL

Basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, by a

Canadian Physical Education instructor James Naismith as a less injury prone sport than
football. This is to condition young athletes get in shape during cold months. It consisted
of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. The first objective of the game is to throw the
soccer ball into the fruit basket nailed to the lower railing of a gym balcony. Every time a
point is scored, the game is halted so that the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve
the ball. After a while, the bottom of the basket was removed.

The game became established fairly quickly and grew very popular as the 20th
century progressed, first in America by the National Basketball Association in 1946, then
in other parts of the world.

BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL

1. SHOOTING- defined as putting the ball in the basket to score a point. Types of shoots
includes: layups, dunks, midrange two-point shots, three-pointers, and free throws.

2. PASSING- it is when a player throws the ball to another player on his team. If that pass
led to a basket, it is called assist. Passes could also be in the major forms: Chest pass,
Bounce pass, and Overhead pass/Baseball pass.

3. DRIBBLING- dribbling or ball handling is a method of bouncing the ball up and down
the floor with one hand to advance it. Dribbling with two hands more than once is a
violation (double dribble).

4. REBOUNDING- it is an attempt to retrieve the ball from a shot.

Two types:
Offensive rebound- retrieved ball from a teammate.
Defensive rebound- retrieved ball from an opponent.

Stealing- taking the ball from an offensive player while either dribbling or passing
it to a teammate.
