Case Study 3 : Preparing for Clinical Practice

Janice, a nursing student, is caring for Esteban, a 48-year-old Latino who had diabetes and
hypertension. Esteban's health care provider writes a new medication order for furosemide 30
mg IVP STAT and then q8h.

● What does Janice need to know about furosemide before administering it?
-Furosemide is a diuretic that is used to treat edema (excess fluid in the body)
caused by heart failure, liver disease, and renal illness. This medication can help with
symptoms like shortness of breath and swelling in the arms, legs, and abdomen. It can
also help with high blood pressure. Furosemide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that
encourages you to produce more urine, which helps to prevent strokes, heart attacks,
and renal issues. This aids in the removal of excess water and salt from your body. As
a result, Janice must read a medication manual first to assess the medication's action,
desired impact, probable side effects, various methods of administration, safe dosage
ranges, and how quickly the medication should be pushed.

● Three vials of furosemide arrive in the patient care unit. The labels on the vials say:
"40 mg furosemide/4 ml." How much medication does Janice prepare on the syringe?
- Using the dimensional analysis, Janice must prepare 3ml in the syringe.

● Janice collects the appropriate equipment to administer the medication, performs hand
hygiene, prepares the medication in the syringe, and takes it to Esteban at the correct
time. Which step does she need to take next in administering the medication?
-Janice must identify the patient using two patient identifiers and compare
them with Esteban’s medication administration record or medical record.
