TEACHER: “Good day, Del Pilarians! This is EveryTeens:

Discussion on Everything Teens! I am Ma’am Mildred, I am
Sir Mac, I am Sir Demdam, and I am Sir Paul and we are your
teachers na hindi na Teens (aww) pero we have been there and
we want to learn from you, Teenagers today.

Thank you for being here today with us as we go together in our

journey towards Personal Development.

Pero Delpilarians, I think this is a very interesting course that

can be personally rewarding for you, because the subject
matter is none other than YOU.

For this episode, we will be talking about “Self” and “Self

Concept”.

(adlib leading to cut, e.g. Side comment na big words then

someone will re-batt na “in a way, yes, big words nga, dahil most
of us will find it challenging to know one self, so today we will try
to talk about this”)
Stinger
MD: So mga Sir, wag na tayong maging in denial, 'di na tayo
teenagers, di ba? Pero, we have been there and I think you
would all agree na ibang iba na ‘yong generation ngayon sa
generation natin noon, tama ba? So ngayon may question ako sa
inyo, mga Sirs. Can you share ano yung mga experiences nyo
during your Adolescence stage para naman may idea yung
audience natin today. Sir Demdam ikaw?...

I.Experiences during adolescence stage.

RD: Ako,(Walang recollection pero magsheshare ng something

remarkable haha). Pero ikaw ba anong experience mo noon, Sir
Maki?

FM: (Transition from Teenage to Adulthood). Ikaw, Sir Paul, anong

masasabi mo?

PE: Ako naman, (Soul Searching). Ikaw ba, Ma’am Mildred?

MD: Grabe, nakakarelate ako sa mga experiences na shinare nyo.

(Physiological and Psychological changes).

Pero eto nga

II. Question from a student.
Hello po, Ma’am and Sirs. I see people of my age po kasi na nag-
eexcel in a lot of things. Pero ako po personally, I feel so stagnant
in terms of personal growth lalo po nitong pandemic, I feel so
unproductive in general leading to the thoughts of being left out.
Can you help me decern how can I better improve my self?

RD: uh-huh! Yung question mo nga, I think that is a question that

most of the people not just your age are asking themselves these
days. (Palalimin pa konti)

PE: I agree with that Sir Demdam. We’ve been through different
individual experiences this pandemic. Iba iba rin tayo ng naging
responses sa mga challenges na ito and all of those are valid. Ang
mahalaga is we still have the chance now to start taking small
steps and move forward towards self-improvement.

FM: Pero mahalaga rin na we remind our selves that life is not a
race. We are not travelling in a race track…we are actually
travelling different roads leading so we must not compare our
journey with other people.

MD: Pero in this journey we do not travel alone di ba? For sure
may mga madadaanan tayong challenges pero for sure din we
will have someone to travel with along the way. And sa journey
din na ito, through those challenges, makikilala natin lalo ang
sarili natin.

RD: So, this leads us to the discussion of the “SELF” as a concept.

Pero before knowing something, the first thing we must do is to
define it, right? So, ano nga ba ang self?

III.Define Self

MD: So, we will try to understand the “SELF” by looking at

its various characteristics according to Richard Stevens –
that self is separate, self-contained, independent, unitary,
and private.

RD: Separate - By separate, it is meant that the self is distinct

from other-selves. The self is always unique and has its own
identity.

FM: Self-Contained and Independent – Self is also self-contained

and independent because in itself, it can exist. §It is consistent
because it has a personality that is enduring and therefore can be
expected to persist for quite some time
PE: Unitary - Self is unitary in a way that it is the center of all
experiences and thoughts that run through a certain person.

MD: Private - Lastly, the self is private. The self is private. Each
person sorts out information, feelings, and emotions, and
thought processes within the self. This whole process is never
accessible to anyone but the self. This suggests that “self” is
isolated from the external world. It lives within its own
world. Having its own world means, you can create or
nurture what you can be (ideal self) or maintain/improve
your current self (actual self).

FM: Okay, so na-define na natin ang “SELF” pero may

tanong ako. Bakit may mga tao na sinasabi na mababa ang
pagtingin nila sa sarili, o may mataas. Ibig sabihin mayroon
tayong idea about “SELF” pero it could be different from the
perspective of other people.

RD: OO, ang tawag doon ay self-concept. Halimbawa, when

you look at the mirror, ‘di ba you’ll see yourself. Pero
actually, you won’t just see your physical self ‘di ba? May
judgement ka about yourself like ang tingin mo sa sarili mo
maganda ka or pangit ka, or may instance na ang taas ng
tingin sa sarili natin or masyadong mababa minsan. Pero
anon ga ba ang self-concept?

IV. Define Self-Concept

PE: SELF-CONCEPT refers to your awareness of yourself.

In other words, it connotes first the identification of the ideal
self as separate from others, and second, it encompasses all
the behaviors evaluated in the actual self that you engage in
to reach the ideal self.

MD: Self-concept has two broad categories – actual self and

ideal self. Ano ba ang ibig sabihin ng actual self at ng ideal
self?

FM: The actual or real self is built on who we actually

are. It is how we think, how we feel and how we actually
act. Tinatawag din itong self-image.

PE: The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to

be. Ito yung idealized image natin on our self na nabubuo
based on our experiences.
RD: So, For example, it can be built on how our parents
mold us. For example, yung ideal self mo ay you want to
be honest, pero there comes an instance that you were
forced na magsinungaling leading to you feeling bad
about your self.

MD: Another example is, ideally, you wanted to be a

person with strong work ethic. Pero nagfefail ka on your
exams, nagffail ka on your deliverables resulting to
mental distress or anxiety. So kapag ganito, nagkakaroon
tayo ng incongruence.
Pero ano nga ba ang incongruence?
