celebrate heritage, culture and
traditions.

Filipinos are fanatics of festivals. In


fact, there are approximately 300
different festivals all over the
Philippines. Their themes are also
differed from one another. Festivals
are celebrated to give honor for their
saints, for good harvest, for their
crops and products and also for their
rituals and traditions.
Today, we are going to focus on the
well-known festivals from Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao.

Let’s move to our first festival, who (Students raise their hand)
has an idea about what Panagbenga
festival is?

Yes Stephen? Panagbenga Festival is the flower


festival of Baguio City which is
celebrated for month long through
parade of floats that are decorated
with flowers.

Another from Luzon is the Pahiyas (Students raise their hand)


festival. Does anyone know about
Pahiyas festival?
Yes Timothy? Pahiyas Festival is a colorful feast
celebrated every 15th of May at
Lucban, Quezon. It is the farmers'
thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest
with a grand display of colorful rice
wafers, fruits, vegetables, and
handicrafts adorning every house in
the town.

Now Let’s go to Visayas. Who has an
idea about what Sinulog festival is?

Yes Paris? Sinulog Festival is an annual festival


commemorates the Filipino people's
pagan origin, and their acceptance of
Roman Catholicism.

Another from Visayas is Ati-Atihan (Students raise their hand)

Atihan festival?

Yes Hailey? The Ati-Atihan festival is a feast held


annually in January in honor of the
Santo Niño (Infant Jesus). The festival
consists of tribal dance, music,
accompanied by indigenous costumes
and weapons, and parade along the
street.

the most the popular in Mindanao is
the Masskara Festival. Does anyone
know about Masskara festival?
Yes Chantal? Masskara Festival a festival held each
year in Bacolod, Philippines. People
wear beautiful masks and costumes.

Other Festivals are geared towards


cultural preservation and tourism
such as Dinagyang festival in Ilo-ilo,
Kadayawan festival in Davao,
Moriones festival in Marinduque,
Lechon festival in Batangas, and
thousands of others.

The creativity and uniqueness of the


Filipinos are highlighted in those
festivals and we should be proud of
it. Each Filipino is an artist. We may
have our differences but there is
always greatness in us and we should
be able to show and develop it.

Those are some of the well-known
festivals here I the Philippines. Now,
let’s review what we have discussed
today.

E. Application:
It is not enough that you just saw and Yes ma’am!
knew those festivals. Now, we will (The students will do their activity)
make our own props from a certain
festival which is the Masskara
festival. Are you ready to make your
own mask?
Follow these instructions, you have
your masks and all you have to do is
to design it according to your
preference. The chicken feathers are
usually glued on the sides of the mask
while the beads are inserted in a
string. Make sure that your masks are
colorful and attractive. Your works
will be graded based on these criteria.
(The criteria for maskara making will
be presented to the students.)

I will only give you 20 minutes to


finish your work. When you hear the
buzzer, it means hands off. Are you
ready? Yes ma’am.

The students will make their masks and graded according to the criteria.

2. Creativity - 25%
3. Neatness - 20%
4. Effort - 15%
5. Resourcefulness - 15%

Interview your grandparents or some elders from your barangay about your festival or
fiesta. Ask these questions and write your answers in your MAPEH notebook.
1. What festival does your city or municipality celebrate?
2. When did the first celebration happen?
3. Give a memorable event that happens in the celebration of a festival.
