Response
time is another important factor with this approach. The ability to
establish a remote connection in order to provide diagnostics, the system
resets, or programming changes to resolve an outage can save a great
deal of time and money.

Secure cellular access may
be required for some isolated
or mobile applications.

While there is great concern over cellular connections, the group’s


consensus is that it is unavoidable, in some cases, because there is no other
practical solution. There are cost considerations as well for each connection,
so this may only be a partial solution when other methods are not available.
The solution should however be integrated into the overall Remote Access
guidelines and approval process.

Best Practice: If a cellular connection is the only choice, be sure


to recognize the risks and use added security measures.

Establish guidelines as to when a cellular link can be utilized and


evaluate each occurence with other methods that may provide a more
secure and cost-effective approach. Make sure that, if it bypasses
IT infrastructure, it does not bypass the OT approval cycle and
documentation.
