Attention is drawn to PD 6497 which indicates the derivation of the basic equations and constants used in BS 5500. Maximum permissible loads for support parts are also specified Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself wmunity from legal obligations, ‘e BS 5276 : Part 2 i British Standard Pressure vessel details (dimensions) Part 2, Specification for saddle supports for horizontal cylindrical pressure vessels 2 ————— — Section one. General 1, Scope ‘This Part of this British Standard specifies dimensions and ‘materials for saddle supports welded to stationary horizontal vessels having dimensions in accordance with Part 4 of thie standard. This standard is applicable to saddle supports welded to vessels manufactured from carbon, carbon manganese and austenitic steels having ‘ permissible design stress not exceeding 210 N/mm? at 50 °C, with corresponding values at higher temperatures. NOTE 1. Ortaie of related referance document are given in appendix 8 NOTE 2. The titles of the publications referred to in thie stancord bre lita on the insige back cover 2. Materials 2.1 Saddle supports. The materials used for the Construction of the supports shal be as follows. (a) The saddle plate, which is welded to the vessel, shall be made from material in accordance with the same material specification 2s the material used for the vessel (b] Material in accordance with BS 4360 grade 43A, [BS 1801-151 grade 400A or 8S 1501-151 grade 430A shall be permitted for other parts of these supports which are not welded to the vessel, providing they are suitable at the predicted temperature. 2.2. Anti-frietion materials for sliding supports. When PTFE is specified for sliding supports (see 5.1), the material shall, comply with BS 3784, This material shall not be used for applications at temperatures in excess of 200 °C. 3.1. The dimensions of the supports shall be as shown in figure 1 or figure 2, according to the diameter of the vessel. 3.2 Saddle supports shal fit closely, and the gap at all exposed edges to be welded shall not exceed 2 mm or lone-twentieth of the thickness of the attachment at the Point of attachment, whichever isthe greater. 4, Manufacture Saddle supports shall normally be welded to the vessel before any post-weld heat treatment, but in exceptional circumstances, the saddle shall be attached following postweld heat treatment, provided that the saddle plete is continuously welded to the shell before post-weld heat ‘treatment. NOTE. This standard does not specity« proctdure for welding the saddle supports tothe vessel after postamesheat trestment and {he ful procedure, including the welding of the sedale, shou'd be subject fo agreement between the manutscturar and the purchowe. 5. Design considerations 5.1 Provision for axial movement. One support shall be fixed and the other restrained laterally but shall be able to,move axially to accommodate movement resulting from thermaf effects and axial stra ‘The sliding support shall be determined from figure 3 as either the steel-on-steel type (see figure 4) or of low friction material (see figure 5) NOTE. Iti assumed tnt the coetticient of fretion ie 1 for steel-onteel slicing supports and 01 for liging supports of low ‘rietion material On tvis boss, the use of the stetl-n see! type ir tobe limited to those sppleations where the lead on the soaale svoport lls blow the curve on figure end i fsa lene than 0.1%, (ove clause 6). Coefficients are yased on calculations in accordance with G.3.3 of 18S 8500 : 1982, for shells not stiffened by rings at the saddies. The coefficients are based on the minimum load allowed by each of the following stress considerations. (a) Tensile longitudinal bending streses at mid span ‘and at the saddles, in conjunction with the maximum permitted stress due to internal pressure (see equations 3nd G.7 of BS 5500 : 1982), (Sompressive longitudinal bending stresses at mid span and at the saddles, in conjunction with f equations G.5 and G.8 of BS $500 : 1982). shearing stresses (see equation G.9 of {BS 5500 : 1982 for vessels of internal diameter of {600 mm to 750 mm and equations G.10 and G.11 of [BS 5500 : 1982 for vessels of internal diameter of 800 mm and larger). (d) Tensile circumferential stresses atthe horn of the saddle, taking @ = 120°. These calculations only include the thickness of the saddle plate when the width of the saddle plate is equal to or greater than 6, + 10r (see equations G.13 and G.14 of BS 5500 : 1982).
