The table shows questionnaires about the opinions of club members and general public for
the new theatre in one town in 2012.
FANPAGE TÀI LIỆU TIẾNG ANH NÂNG CAO HAIDANGENGLISH.COM

PERFORMANCE 1

The table provides an overview of evaluation for three different aspects of the new theatre
in a town made by club members and general publice in 2012. (1)

Overall, it is apparent that the majority of both club members and general publice (2) were
highly satisfied with the facilities, information and quality offered by the new theatre whereas a
negligible proportion of them thought that such aspects left a lot to be desired. (3) (4)

With respect to facilities, most club members, a total of 72% (5), ranked this category as
excellent, which was higher than the proportion of general publice with the same opinion by
8% (6). Around a quarter of club members and general publice evaluated (7) facilities as
satisfied. By contrast, only a negligible percentage of them rated this aspect as poor yet the figure
for general publice was higher than its counterpart, at 8% as against 2%. (8)

Concerning information, over a half of club members (9) and general publice found this
category to be excellent whereas roughly one-third (10) of club members and one-fifth of the
general publice were satisfied. Furthermore, no more than 16% (11) of each group evaluated
the information aspect as poor.

Apropos (12) quality, while a vast majority of club members ranked it as excellent, with a
record high of 88% (13), slightly over a half of the general public thought so. However, the
percentage of general publice satisfied with the theatre's quality was significantly higher than
that of club members, at 40% as against 10% (14). Similarly yet less strikingly, merely 7% of
general publice found the quality to be ill-developed (15), which was greater than the figure
for club members by 5%. (16)

PERFORMANCE 2

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of impoverished women (1), whereas the bar chart
compares the poverty rates based on sex and age groups in the US in 2008.

In general, the majority of poor women in the US were single with no dependent children. In
addition, women of all ages (2) in the country were more likely to live in poverty compared to
men in the surveyed year.

A closer inspection of the pie chart reveals that single women without any dependent children
constituted a vast (3) majority (54%) of the total percentage in 2008, which roughly doubled that
of their counterparts having dependent offspring (26%). Meanwhile, only 12% of the studied
females in destitution were married ones with dependent children, slightly surpassing (4) the
figure for child-free ones by 4%.

Regarding the bar chart, the 75+ age group registered the widest gender disparity in poverty
rates, in which the figure for women (about 15%) far exceeded that for men by two to one (5).
Similarly but less strikingly, the proportions of impoverished women aged 18-24 and 25-34
stood at 20% and 15% respectively, which were 5% higher than those of their male counterparts.
The gender gap in poverty was less remarkable among 35-74-year-olds, with data hovering
between just 2% and 4%. Noticeably, those aged below 5 and 5-17 were the only age groups to
boast (6) similar poverty rates between two sexes, at around 21% and 16% respectively.

Read the following extract and use your own words to summarise it. Your summary should
be between 100 and 120 words.

Researchers say a pilot program that paid Uganda landowners to not cut down trees, successfully
reduced deforestation. For the program, researchers from Northwestern University and Porticus,
a Dutch organization, studied 121 villages over two years. In 60 villages they offered landowners
$28 a year for every 10,000 square meters of the forest they did not cut down. To collect their
data, the researchers used interviews, site inspections and satellite images to monitor forests
around the villages.

Uganda had one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. It loses about 2.7 percent of
its forest each year between 2005 and 2010. The study, published in the journal “Science,” found
that villages in the payment program had saved 55,000 square meters of forestland more than
other villages. In addition, there was not a rush to cut down trees after the program ended.
However, because the study was small compared to the size of the timber and charcoal markets,
researchers were not able to see its effect on the markets. Without that information, they were not
able to demonstrate that reduced deforestation in the study region didn't lead to increased
deforestation elsewhere.

The Union of Concerned Scientists say deforestation causes about 10% of global carbon
emissions. They say that not cutting down trees is one of the least expensive ways of capturing
carbon. Trees absorb carbon and need it to grow. This helps keep the carbon levels in the air low.
Seema Jayachandran is one of the study leaders from Northwestern. She feels that the program
will be most effective in partnership with others to address the reasons for deforestation. One
example could be helping people in cities get stoves, so they are not cooking with charcoal.
Another idea is to teach farmers how to grow more food in less space, so they don't need to clear
as much forest for land to grow food.

PERFORMANCE 3

The extract elaborates on a successful Dutch pilot program to curb deforestation in Uganda.
After two years of research, the organization began their program by offering an amount of
money to some landowners for a certain area of undestroyed forests, monitored directly and
indirectly via satellite images. Once a region with the highest deforestation rate, the program
helped some villages in Uganda protect a notable area of forestland. However, a correlation
between intact forestland and deforestation rates elsewhere could not be concluded due to
the small scale of the program (1). A study leader expressed that addressing the reasons for
deforestation with others can further boost the efficacy of the program. (2)

1. not clear enough (However, the study was conducted on a small scale, so it was unclear
whether such forest preservation caused landowners to shift tree-cutting to other lands.)
2. not clear (Leading experts regard curbing deforestation as the most cost-efficient approach to
cutting carbon emissions, but suggest that this program should be carried out in conjunction with
FANPAGE TÀI LIỆU TIẾNG ANH NÂNG CAO HAIDANGENGLISH.COM

other methods to become more effective. These include replacing charcoal with stoves and
promoting higher yields to reduce the conversion of forests to cropland.)

PERFORMANCE 4

The extract sheds light on the link between a reduction in felling and payment to landowners
(1). Researchers paid Ugandan landholders in many villages to stop cutting down trees in forests.
Villages in the program showed (2) a significant increse (3) in the meters of forestland
preserved, coupled with the fact that they did not find the need to cut trees afterwards.
Nevertheless, the insignificance of the study in terms of scale has rendered these results
insufficient to prove anything (4). Carbon emissions can be effectively and cheaply reduced if
felling comes to an end, as trees keep the levels of carbon low with their consumption. That said,
the program is hoped to be more effective once countries cooperate to reduce their carbon in
many other ways.

1. While fell means cut down trees, it is not common to use felling. Moreover, payment is the
condition, reduction in cutting down trees is the result, so it should be "payment to landowners
and a reduction in deforestation.
2. Poor expression here, should be "The program resulted in a larger forest area protected in the
participating villages "
3. spelling mistake
4. What do you mean “anything” here? This should be “to prove whether such forest
preservation caused landowners to shift tree-cutting to other lands.”

Write an essay of 350 words on the following topic.

It is inevitable that as technology develops, cultures must be lost. Technology and traditions
are incompatible – you cannot have both together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons and specific
examples to support your answer.

PERFORMANCE 5

Technological advancement plays an indispensable part in the fourth industrial revolution

nowadays. However, a school of thought holds that technology's development is synonymous
with traditional failure (1) due to their incompatibility. From my perspective, I do not concur
with this statement and affirm the symbiotic relationship between technology and culture.

Undoubtedly, technology initially promotes culture's popularity and coverage. Had it not been
for the advent of social media, numerous cultural festivals worldwide would not have achieved
such an unprecedented reputation. Illustrative of this is the Carnival of Venice in Italy, a
nuanced celebration attracting millions of tourists annually. (2) This is a testament to the
enormous impact of technological development on cultural expansion to a wider range of
people (3). Moreover, it is technology that goes a long way towards preserving worthy
traditional values (4). For example, in nowadays museums, humans are inclined to take
advantage of state-of-the-art automatic devices to establish a secure fortress protecting
invaluable works of art that have been passed down on (5) for centuries. Such an instance
somehow fortifies the indispensability (6) of technology in spreading and conserving priceless
cultural possessions rather than exterminating them.

There is no gainsaying the fact that culture also plays a significant role in stimulating
technological advancements. (7) Traditions are beneficial in setting the trajectory for automatic
progress as each country usually follows different methods of high-tech improvement which are
commensurate with its traditions, customs and human beings. As a result, not only can it thrive
technologically but it can also maintain unique national characteristics rather than being
saturated in such an ever-evolving world. European countries perfectly exemplify this situation.
Despite their remarkable technological developments, virtually all of them are able to exploit
technology to further preserve extraordinary constructions from the Renaissance that have
become exceptional features when it comes to Western culture. If humans do not take traditions
into consideration while improving technology, they will soon be deprived of core values what
have birthed their existence and prompted modern developments.

In conclusion, I assert that there is an inextricable relationship between technology and culture.
They are equally important to create civilized and modernized societies where human living
standards are guaranteed by technological advancement whilst their mental well-beings are fully
inspired by worthwhile cultural values.

Write an essay of around 350 words on the following topic.

It is important to be concerned about international events, even if those events have no

direct impact on our lives.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons and specific
examples to support your answer.

PERFORMANCE 6

From the current war between Russia and Ukraine, to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and
World Cup 2022 in Qatar, the modern citizens today are frequently bombarded with information
about events from all corners of the world via different means of media such as television,
newspaper, and radio. From my perspective, it is completely beneficial to be aware of these
international affairs (1) because of the following reasons.
There are two major benefits (2) of raising awareness about (3) what are happening in other
countries. Firstly, acknowledging international events are part and parcel of (4) successful
diplomacy, as it is a sign of mutual respect, understanding and collaboration. Diplomats from
one country, for instance, need to be cognizant of events such as the election of new government
leaders in ally countries (5), and send letters or messages of congratulations to the new president
on behalf of the entire nation. Furthermore, by concentrating on international events, a country
can come up with (6) optimal measures to deal with its very own issues. Rather than waiting for
the disaster to strike unexpectedly and take a toll on the society, the country can examine and
draw lessons from how other nations are dealing with such an affair. One prominent example
would be the Covid-19 pandemic. In late 2019, when human-to-human infection in Wuhan,
China had not spread to Vietnam, our country still investigated the results of their preventative
and lockdown policies, and well as plans to build makeshift hospitals, hence being well-prepared
for the upcoming wave of the pandemic with the optimal policy.
Opponents against learning about events in countries might argue that this (7) is a sheer waste of
time and effort due to the absence of direct impacts on our lives. They believe that individuals
had better redirect their focus to the local and regional issues, which are seemingly more urgent
and influential than those from the other half of the planet. If a country is already mired in
poverty, illiteracy and civil wars, its citizens are advised to prioritize solving problems in their
own backyard (8) before expanding the helping hand beyond the national boundary. While it is
true that local issues should be given priority, such an approach is rather short-sighted and
unsustainable, as it fails to look at the bigger picture of interdependence in this globalized, highly
integrated world, where the root cause of a local issue might not lie in the country itself, but in
some far-flung regions. Despite being among the few carbon-negative countries, Bhutan, Kiribati
and Tuvalu are still hard hit by climate change and sea level rise, as they are standing under the
same atmosphere and on the same planet with countries that allow rampant deforestation,
consumerism and fossil fuel combustion to release megatons of greenhouse gases per year. A

complete success in the fight against these environmental crises, therefore, requires
environmentally-conscious nations to not only carry on its past efforts, but also be aware of the
destruction happening in other countries, and thus try to promote international collaboration by
setting themselves as an example.
In conclusion, I completely agree with the notion that international events should be regarded as
a matter of concerns, because of their value in diplomacy and the formation of ideal polices, as
well as the interconnectedness among all nations. It is, however, inadvisable to fully concentrate
on affairs in other countries by being indifferent to local and regional issues that are of grave
concern.
