Phần 5: ĐỌC HIỂU
Passage 1:
Off the northeastern shore of North America, from the island of Newfoundland in Canada south to New
England in the United States, there is a series of shallow areas called banks. Several large banks off
Newfoundland are together called the Grand Banks, huge shoals on the edge of the North American
10
continental shelf, where the warm waters of the Gulf Stream meet the cold waters of the Labrador Current.
As the currents brush each other, they stir up minerals from the ocean 9loor, providing nutrients for
plankton and tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill, which feed on the plankton. Herring and other small
9ish rise to the surface to eat the krill. Ground9ish, such as the Atlantic cod, live in the ocean’s bottom layer,
congregating in the shallow waters where they prey on krill and small 9ish. This rich environment has
produced cod by the millions and once had a greater density of cod than anywhere else on Earth.
Beginning in the eleventh century, boats from the ports of northwestern Europe arrived to 9ish the Grand
Banks. For the next eight centuries, the entire Newfoundland economy was based on Europeans arriving,
catching 9ish for a few months in the summer, and then taking 9ish back to European markets. Cod laid out
to dry on wooden “9lakes” was a common sight in the 9ishing villages dotting the coast. Settlers in the
region used to think the only sea creature worth talking about was cod, and in the local speech the word
“9ish” became synonymous with cod. Newfoundland’s national dish was a pudding whose main
ingredient was cod.
By the nineteenth century, the Newfoundland 9ishery was largely controlled by merchants based in the
capital at St. John’s. They marketed the catch supplied by the 9ishers working out of more than 600 villages
around the long coastline. In return, the merchants provided 9ishing equipment, clothing, and all the food
that could not be grown in the island’s thin, rocky soil. This system kept the 9ishers in a continuous state of
debt and dependence on the merchants.
Until the twentieth century, 9ishers believed in the cod’s ability to replenish itself and thought that
over9ishing was impossible. However, Newfoundland’s cod 9ishery began to show signs of trouble during
the 1930s, when cod failed to support the 9ishers and thousands were unemployed. The slump lasted for
the next few decades. Then, when an international agreement in 1977 established the 200-mile offshore
9ishing limit, the Canadian government decided to build up the modem Grand Banks 9leet and make 9ishing
a viable economic base for Newfoundland again. All of Newfoundland’s seafood companies were merged
into one conglomerate. By the 1980s, the conglomerate was prospering, and cod
were commanding excellent prices in the market. Consequently, there was a signi9icant increase in the
number of 9ishers and 9ish-processing plant workers.
However, while the offshore 9ishery was prospering, the inshore 9ishermen found their catches dropping
off. [A] In 1992 the Canadian government responded by closing the Grand Banks to ground9ishing. [B]
Newfoundland’s cod 9ishing and processing industries were shut down in a bid to let the vanishing stocks
recover. [C] The moratorium was extended in 1994, when all of the Atlantic cod 9isheries in Canada were
closed, except for one in Nova Scotia, and strict quotas were placed on other species of ground9ish. [D]
Canada’s cod 9ishing industry collapsed, and around 40,000 9ishers and other industry workers were put
out of work.
Atlantic cod stocks had once been so plentiful that early explorers joked about walking on the backs of
the teeming 9ish. Today, cod stocks are at historically low levels and show no signs of imminent recovery,
even after drastic conservation measures and severely limited 9ishing. Fishermen often blame the
diminishing stocks on seals, which prey on cod and other species, but scientists believe that decades of
over9ishing are to blame. Studies on 9ish populations have shown that cod disappeared from Newfoundland
at the same time that stocks started rebuilding in Norway, raising the possibility that the cod had migrated.
Still, no one can predict whether and when the cod will return to the Grand Banks.

Passage 2:
New surveys suggest that the technological tools we use to make our lives easier are killing our leisure time.
We are working longer hours, taking fewer and shorter vacations (and when we do go away, we take our
cell phones, PDAs, and laptops along). And, we are more stressed than ever as increased use of e-mail, voice
mail, cell phones, and the Internet is destroying any idea of privacy and leisure.
Since the Industrial Revolution, people have assumed that new labor-saving devices would free them from
the burdens of the workplace and give them more time to grow intellectually, creatively, and socially -
exploring the arts, keeping up with current events, spending more time with friends and family, and even
just ‘goo9ing off’.
But here we are at the start of the 21st century, enjoying one of the greatest technological boom times in
human history, and nothing could be further from the truth. The very tools that were supposed to liberate
us have bound us to our work and study in ways that were inconceivable just a few years ago. It would
seem that technology almost never does what we expect.
In ‘the old days’, the lines between work and leisure time were markedly clearer. People left their of9ices at
a predictable time, were often completely disconnected from and out of touch with their jobs as they
traveled to and from work, and were off-duty once they were home. That is no longer true. In today's highly
competitive job market, employers demand increased productivity, expecting workers to put in longer
hours and to keep in touch almost constantly via fax, cell phones, e-mail, or other communications devices.
As a result, employees feel the need to check in on what is going on at the of9ice, even on days off. They feel
pressured to work after hours just to catch up on everything they have to do. Workers work harder and
longer, change their work tasks more frequently, and have more and more reasons to worry about job
security.
Bosses, colleagues, family members, lovers, and friends expect instant responses to voice mail and e-mail
messages. Even college students have become bound to their desks by an environment in which faculty,
friends, and other members of the college community increasingly do their work online. Studies of time
spent on instant messaging services would probably show staggering use.
This is not what technology was supposed to be doing for us. New technologies, from genetic research to
the Internet, offer all sorts of bene9its and opportunities. But, when new tools make life more dif9icult and
stressful rather than easier and more meaningful - and we are, as a society, barely conscious of it - then
something has gone seriously awry, both with our expectations for technology and our understanding of
how it should bene9it us.
