1. Profile of MSME Business

Table 1 shows that among 39 selected MSME businesses in Barangay

Baluan, General Santos City, 34 MSME business is a sole proprietorship, 12 MSME

business is a partnership and 3 of the MSME business is a corporation.

According to the businesses profiled, the majority of the ownership type is Sole Proprietorship
with 34 respondents which is equivalent to 69.4%. Under the Partnership, there were 12
respondents with 24.5%, and lastly, Corporation with 3 respondents with a total of 6.1%.

Table 2 and Figure 1 showed that among 49 selected MSME businesses in

Brgy. Baluan, General Santos City, 5 MSME business has a business capital amounting

to PHP 10,000 and below, 4 MSME business has a business capital ranging from

PHP10,001 to PHP 20,000, 7 MSME business has a business capital ranging from PHP

20,001 to PHP 30,000, 4 MSME business has a business capital ranging from PHP

30,001 to PHP 40,000 and 29 MSME business has a business capital amounting to

PHP 40,000 and above.

The pie chart for the Nature of Business interprets that; the Service Type Business
(Business) has the highest percentage with a total of 40% and 32 responses under the
Nature of Business in Baluan, Service business is known for selling or offering
intangible items. Retail/Trading (Food) with a total percentage of 20% and had 16
responses. Followed by the Retail/Trading (Non Food) with the total percentage of 15%
and had 12 responses, retail trade encompasses the department store, bookstore, and
grocery store you stopped at, as well as many others who sell new or used goods to the
public for personal or household use. The remaining responses were as follows: Service
Business Tourism, Personal, Manufacturing Business for Food Essential, and Food
Non-essential.

The pie chart for the Source of Finances for establishing their businesses was mostly in personal savings
that had 34 respondents which is equivalent to 69.4%. The second most significant source of funding is
Personal Investment/Income which had 12 respondents and a total of 25.5%. The rest of the capital of 2
respondents came from Loans from Bank/Lending Companies and 1 respondent borrowed from family &
friends

The Product ordering chart is dominated by Walk in/ On Site type, with a total of 47

respondents (97.90%), and for the Online had 14 respondents (29.90%).

The most common method of service delivery or product delivery used by businesses in Barangay
Baluan is on-site which had a total of 91.80% because it does not need them to spend extra money on
transportation, and it is also less time demanding for business owners. Second, is followed by door-to-
door delivery with 20.40%, this type of delivery is mostly service-type business in the area. Lastly,
26.50% is Third party services which are commonly used by other businesses infrequently

The commonly used mode of payment is cash 99% especially in Service Type Business for low-

value day to day transactions. followed by cheque 1% for secure these being used much less

frequently in Service.

49 Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) located in Barangay Baluan, General Santos City
participated in this study. Each participating MSMEs was asked to estimate their yearly gross income for
the years 2020, 2021, and 2022. The pie charts below show the results of the survey conducted with the
total number of participants, 16 MSMEs (34%) said that their estimated annual gross income was PHP
75,000 to 100,000 in the year 2020. While 8 MSMEs (17%) estimated their annual gross income was
below PHP 50,000 in the year 2020. 8 MSMEs with an estimated annual gross income between PHP
50,000 to 75,000 add up to 17%, followed by those MSMEs with an estimated annual gross income of
PHP 100,001 to 125,000 at 19.1% (9 MSMEs). The MSMEs with an annual gross income above 125,001
constitute 12.2% (6 MSMEs). This goes to show that the majority of the participating MSMEs have an
estimated annual gross income of PHP 75,000 to PHP 100,000 in the year 2020.

The data above shows that both MSMEs earning above 75,000 and 100,000 to 125,001 in Barangay

Baluan accumulated 26.50% which is the highest percentage. The it was followed by 22% of

business earning 100,001 to 125,000. There is also a total of 18.50% who earn below 50,000. And

lastly, 6.10% businesses earned ranging PHP 50,001 to PHP 75,000 a year during the year 2021.

The figure above clearly indicates that there is an increase in the percentage of MSMEs starts who earn
above PHP 125,001, it reached 40.8%; A total of 20 businesses were able to earn it within this year 2022.
There is also a change concerning the number of businesses earning the least on the list which is below
PHP 50,000, from 18.5% to 14.3%. While 20% of the total number of respondents earned between PHP
100,000 to PHP 125,000 and 16.30% of the respondents were able to reach PHP 75,001 to PHP 100,000.
Lastly, the estimated income of 8.20% of the businesses gets to PHP 50,001 to PHP 75,000.

2. Marketing Strategies

2.1 Product Strategy

According to the responses of the respondents from Barangay Baluan, under the business strategies
specifically for the products, the frequently used product strategy is service strategy with a total of 30
responses that has a relative frequency of 66.70%, this strategy of a business is to make strategic
decisions when planning and delivering targeted services to drive long-term growth and success. The
second most used product strategy with 19 responses that have 41.70% relative frequency, is the cost
strategy which allows businesses to produce products at a lower cost and offer them at a lower price.
While, 2 respondents (4.20%) said they use the differentiation strategy because this approach
businesses develop by providing customers with something unique, different, and distinct from items
their competitors may offer in the marketplace. Lastly, the focus strategy had 1 response which
constitute 2.10%.

The price strategy is vital in every business. As a result of the survey, it shows that

the businesses in the Barangay Baluan mostly used discount pricing with ..

responses and a 57.10% relative frequency. Next is cost-based pricing with ..

responses and a relative frequency of 48.90%, then the bulk pricing with ..

responses with a relative frequency of 42.90%, then the dynamic pricing which had

6.10% of relative frequency and economic pricing that accumulated also a6.10%.

lastly competitive pricing which had 2% of relative frequency.

The most used promotion strategies having 47 responses are the tarpaulins which

had a 95.90% of relative frequency followed by the banners 65.30%, then word of

mouth 63.30% of relative frequency, social media marketing 32.70%, brochures


14.30% and flyers 10.20%, lastly, television advertisement that has relative

frequency of 2.00%

The figure shows that most of the businesses use the Democratic or participative type

of leadership strategy in letting multiple people participate in the decision-making

process. 75% are in the democratic or participative type, 15% are in autocratic and 10%

are in delegative.

The result from the survey regarding the number of employees from 2020-2022 presented using a line
graph. A line graph also known as a line chart or a line plot is commonly drawn to show information that
changes over time. According to their responses, the number of their employees increases over time, as
seen in the graph. However, as seen above, some establishments have neither dropped nor increased
over time.

During the pandemic, there are different work set-ups being acquired and as a result

from Barangay Baluan most businesses had skeletal workforce then on call, work from

home and shifting. From the beginning of the pandemic to the present, 38 businesses

had a skeleton workforce.

The source of the raw materials is usually coming from their own supplier. 39

businesses had their own supplier with 79.60% then 32 businesses had own

produce, 5 were from the mall supermarket 10.20% and 2 from dry markets

that had 4.10% relative frequency.

In Barangay Baluan, the businesses used in terms of inventory strategy are

mostly First-In-First Out (FIFO) with a total of 77.60% then 16.30% for the

consignment, then 14.30% for the safety stock, then 4.10% for the Last-In-

Last Out (LIFO) and 4.10% for none that accumulated also with 4.10%.

is the refinance strategy with 98%, followed by 6.10% renewal of loans.

In this figure, the question is about the government program and support needed
by MSME start ups to cope up with the pandemic. Most of them, the 22
responses equivalent to 44.905, chose training and seminars, then 42.90%
answered none, then 10.20% for the tax holidays and endorsements and
promotions, followed by 8.20% funding grants and loans and 4.10 for the
subsidies.
