MAX-II / MAX-IIa

INSTALLATION GUIDE
13-1002 Rev B

January 2022

1
This Guide does not replace the need for the user to read the individual
Instruction Manuals! Please read the instruction manual before using the
Max-II or Max-IIa System.

The MAX-II/MAX-IIa System is shipped with a pre-assembled cart and a number of

separately packed items for adding to the cart. These items typically include the MAX-
II/MAX-IIa Control Unit, Sensor Box and Pneumotach, assorted tubing and fittings,
Calibration Syringe, Breathing Valve assembly, Noseclips and Mouthpieces, Headgear,
USB cable[s], Heart Rate Watch, Heart Rate Receiver and Cable, and the MAX-II Software
CD.

Unpacking
It is generally a good idea to save the boxes and packaging materials used to ship the MAX-
II/MAX-IIa, and Sensor Box & Pneumotach. These boxes and materials [if in very good
condition] could then be used in the future to return items for calibration or service.

Use caution when cutting the cardboard boxes. Cutting too deeply may damage or
ruin the contents!

Carefully inspect all items for damage. If any damage is found please take a picture of the
damaged item AND its shipping container then contact AEI Technologies immediately.

System Assembly
This guide is for assistance to those not familiar with the MAX-II/MAX-IIa and carrying out
the initial installation. Detailed instructions for the set up, calibration and operation are
provided in individual Instruction Manuals for the Oxygen Transducer and Carbon Dioxide
Transducer, and MAX-II/MAX-IIa System. These Manuals are also available after software
installation or contact us at: info@aeitechnologies.com. Instructions for installing the
Canopy System option is located in the Appendix of the Max-II/Max-IIa Instruction Manual.

NOTE: For details on the Canopy Option setup and operation please also refer to
the MAX-II Instruction Manual.

***WARNING***
Ensure all electrically powered items, including computer, monitor, printer, and
MAX-II/MAX-IIa Control Unit are correctly set & fused for your supplied AC supply
voltage. Refer to Serial Number labels (rear of analyzers) and Manuals.

FOR ASSEMBLY PLEASE REFER TO SYSTEM BLOCK DIAGRAM AND PHOTOS

AT THE END OF THIS GUIDE AS WELL AS THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW.

* Place partially assembled cart post into cart base. Carefully tilt the cart on its side. Attach the
4 black bolts through the bottom of the cart base and into the post with provided wrench.
Securely tighten the bolts.

2
* If the system includes the Canopy Option: first place the Canopy Pump onto the cart base
with its tubing port facing to the right. Slide a provided plastic bracket, with the set screw to
the top, onto cart post and resting upon the Canopy Pump. Be careful to avoid the cables on
the cart post. Securely tighten the set screw to secure the bracket.

* Slide a shelf onto cart post to a height of 29” above the floor Be careful to avoid the cables on
the cart post. Securely tighten the 2 setscrews to secure the shelf.

* Slide a second shelf onto cart post to a height of 43 above the floor Be careful to avoid the
cables on the cart post. Securely tighten the 2 set screws to secure the shelf.

* Place the MAX-II Control Unit on the second shelf, pushed toward the front. Refer to Front
View photo. If desired place and secure a provided black bumper under each ‘foot’ of the
MAX-II Control Unit; this will help keep the MAX-II in place.

* The Mixing Chamber gets placed in the rear between the 2 upper gas tank brackets oriented
with the Sample Out Luer connector to the right as shown on the Right-Side View photo.
Secure with 4 knurled knobs. Adjust the height of the upper tank bracket if necessary.

* The Sensor Box & Pneumotach are pre-assembled on a mounting plate. The Sensor Box gets
placed in the rear on the top gas tank bracket oriented as shown on the Right Side View photo.
Secure with 2 knurled knobs.

* Place the Dryer Box on the right side of the bottom shelf next to MAX-II Control Unit. If
desired secure to the MAX-II with the provided Velcro.

* Connect MAX-II Control Unit to the AC power strip with provided power cord. Turn on
MAX-II Control Unit, verify that the front panel display is on, and to allow adequate warm up
time (minimum 16 hours) prior to calibration.

* Please refer to System Block Diagram below. Attach one end of the Nafion drying tube to the
TOP ‘Dryer Box’ Leur port on the rear of the Control Unit using supplied mating Leur
connector.

* Attach the free end of the Nafion drying tube to the round plastic filter mounted to the Dryer
Box using supplied mating Leur connector. Connect a 1/16” ID tubing from the other Air
Drier Box Leur connector using supplied mating Leur connectors to the BOTTOM ‘Dryer
Box’ barb on the rear of the Control Unit.

* Slide the Calibration Syringe bracket into the front slot on the cart post until it is just above
the top shelf; then securely tighten the set screw. Place the Calibration Syringe into the
circular clamps on the bracket and close the levers to secure. Use a screwdriver to adjust the
clamp diameter if necessary. Refer to Right and Front photos.

* If desired slide the decorative Front Channel Cover into the slots in the cart post front.

* Slide the Swing Arm, if available, mounting bracket into the front slot and secure at the top
edge of the post. Place the bottom pin of the articulating Arm into the hole on the top of the
mounting bracket along with the provided plastic washer. The tension of the Arm may be
adjusted by using the wrench provided.

3
* If desired, mount the Breathing Valve onto the Swing Arm by removing the quick release pin
[press and hold button in while sliding the pin out] at the end of the Arm, slide the Valve onto
the Arm aligning the holes, replace the quick release pin through both Valve and Arm.
Otherwise, the Headgear may be used if more mobility is desired.

* Refer to Left photo. The Mixing Chamber has 2 large diameter ports for exhaled air. When
viewed from the Rear the port on the left is the inlet port. The other port is the outlet port,
which you can also identify by the Luer fitting that connects the sampling line to the mixing
chamber outlet port. The Mixing Chamber inlet port connects to the expiratory port of the
breathing valve using a 9 ft. corrugated hose [indicated by an ‘Out’ pointing arrow on the
valve].
NOTE: The 9 ft. corrugated hose are installed and removed by grasping the NON-
CORRUGATED end and wiggling side-to-side while pushing/pulling. DO NOT TWIST.

* Attach the short corrugated Exhaust Hose [about .75m] to the Mixing Chamber outlet port.
Snap the other end of the hose into the clamp located on the bottom tank bracket.

* Connect the supplied Fan Cable from the connector on the front of the Mixing Chamber to the
mating connector on the MAX-II Control Unit.

* The Mixing Chamber outlet port has a Luer fitting utilized for drawing the gas sample from
the mixing chamber. Connect the supplied 1/16” ID tubing attached to the MAX-II Control
Unit ‘Mixing Chamber Sample In’ port to the Luer fitting on the Mixing Chamber; making
certain this Luer connection is snug. IMPORTANT: to achieve highest accuracy the length of
this tube must be of the exact length supplied. Contact AEI Technologies if a different length
is required or the tubing needs to be replaced.

* Connect a 9 ft. corrugated flexible hose to the end of the Pneumotach closest to the numbers 1
& 2 [this is the Expiratory side of Pneumotach] and connect the other end of the hose to the
inspiratory port of the breathing valve [indicated by an ‘In’ pointing arrow on the valve]. The
hose from the Pneumotach should be straight for about 1 foot before a bend in the hose. Use
the bracket to support the hose if necessary.
NOTE: The 9 ft. corrugated hoses are installed and removed by grasping the NON-
CORRUGATED end and wiggling side-to-side while pushing/pulling. DO NOT TWIST.

* The two 9 ft. corrugated hoses on the breathing valve may be bundled together using the
provided Velcro straps; and they may also be suspended from the swing arm.

* Place the laptop computer on the top of the cart. An optional Printer may fit on the base or
behind the computer. If there is no room to place a printer on the base system cart a separate
cart may be necessary. Setup and connect the computer and printer following the instructions
provided in their cartons. Connect the provided USB cable from the PC to the rear of the
MAX-II Control Unit. Connect the laptop power supply to the power strip at the bottom of the
cart using the supplied plug adaptor.

* If you wish to use the provided Heart Rate Monitor connect the Heart Rate Cable to the
MAX-II Control Unit ‘Heart Rate In’ jack. Plug the Heart Rate Receiver into the opposite end
of the cable. NOTE: If you do not intend to use the Heart Rate Monitor do not connect this
Cable.

4
* Place the Calibration Gas cylinders onto the appropriate cylinder holder located on the rear of
the cart. Remove and discard the protective plastic tabs on the cylinders. Examine the
regulator assembly and verify that there is a black rubber and brass washer attached to the
regulator where it mates with the cylinder. Do not attach regulator if washer is missing; first
add the washer. Attach a regulator to each cylinder and securely tighten by hand [use the
provided cylinder wrench if necessary]. NOTE: It is recommended to connect the tank with
the higher value of CO2 to the Tank 1 port on the Control Unit and the lower value of CO2 to
Tank 2 port. NOTE: These concentrations must then be assigned as instructed in the Software
Setup section of the MAX-II Instruction Manual.

* Connect the 24” tube with the white connector from the Tank I regulator to the Tank 1 input
of the Interface Box. Make certain the connector is latched with a ‘clicking’ sound. Repeat for
Tank 2. If the tubes are not provided use approximately 24” of 1/8” ID tubing.

* Power up the cart and ensure all electrically powered items are turned on. Start the Computer
and begin software installation (see below).
