They are decorative but also very {functional for warmth in garments and accessories—the open spaces between the ruffles traps body heat. | also love math, so when the book Crocheting ‘Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes by Daina Taimina (AK Peters/GRC Press, 2008) was released a few years ago, | was completely intrigued. Math, crochet, and rufies alin one book! ‘You may be asking: "What is a hyperbolic plane?" The geometrical explanation {gs "a surface with constant negative curvature." A simpler explanation is “ries.” Fllfles are all about curvature, and curvature In crochet is all about increases, You can see hyperbolic planes all around you in nature, especially in the plant World. Look at leafy plants Ike lettuce and kale—those wavy, curly edges mean there is @ larger amount of surface area to the leaf, which allows the plant to ‘maximize the amount of sunlight it can harness to create food. Fora true hyperbolic plane, the rate of increase remains the same forall rows or rounds of crochet. That rate of increase can vary a great deal, though the more rows you have, the more visible the curvature ofthe plane. The example in photo B has a much more dramatic ruffle effect in 8 rows, but Ifyou crocheted the example in photo A to 16 rows, you would see an equiva- lently dramatic ruffing, as shown in photo C. ‘My fondness for rufies inspired my Double Rutties Scarf (page 22). | saw this ‘design as a great way to explore the variations of rule math that were bouncing ‘about in my brain after reading Daina’s book. The pattern | came up with isn't a true hyperbolic plane, but many of the concepts are there, | wanted to create a soft ruffied edge along a flat oblong scarf. That meant figuring out the increases for the ends of the unrutfied center. | then needed to determine the Increase rata forthe ruffle rounds. The increases had to occur frequently enough to create the soft flaring into the edge ruffle | had in mind without creating cupping at the ends of the scart ‘Two things you will notice when working the scar i that you use a lot of yarn to create the rufle rounds and that It takes much longer to work around the edge. Found 5, in particular, doubles the number of stitches. Ths is true when working ‘any sor of hyperbolic plane —each row or round increases in length very quickly itis one reason that crochet is an ideal medium for making models of hyperbolic planes, since we generally dealing with only one stitch ata time, ‘Some fun variations to try with the Double Rutles Scarf patter isto make it into ‘anack cozy orto play with the Increase rates for Rounds 3-5. ‘To oreate a neck cozy, shorten the length of the foundation. For my neck cozy (shown in photo 0), | used a foundation of 39 fsc, then worked the pattern for the same 6 rounds as the scarf with fewer shells along the length. | also made a neck cozy version in which | changed the increase rate for rounds 3-5 to be more of a true hyperbolic plane (eee photo E). | ust repeated the instructions for Round 3 for Rounds 4 and § minus the stitch marker placement. Ifyou decide to play with these increase changes for the longer scarf, you wil ‘need to purchase more yarn. Have some fun with yourruffies! But 've got a surprise for you. In previous issues, 've been teaching you how to Tunisian crochet without pressure and without your knowledge! Yes indeed, 've taught you briefly about foundation stitches, which are nothing more than Tunisian crochet worked on very few stitches. And I've taught you linked stitches, which are actually Tunisian crochet in a join-as-you-go method. So you see, I've already given you all the sklls you need to get down to business with some Tunisian crochet. ‘There are three parts to this article: foundation row, various stitches, and color changes. These are the skis you will need In order to stitch the projects I've designed specifically for this issue. oundation Row ‘To begin, you'll make a chain, just like most other crochet. projects. Your chain count wil be the same number as your stitch count, which Is a good thing to remember as you're leaming so you can avoid adding oF losing stitches as you practice. | prefer to turn the chain ver and insert the hook Into the back horizontal bar to pull loop up, as shown by the arrows, Insert your hook into the second cchain from the hook, yarn over, and pull a loop through. Leave that oop on your hook. Now ingert your hook in the next chain, Yyarn over, and pull a loop through. Continue in this manner until you hhave the same number of loops fon your hook as your inital chain ‘count. Grochet 1 ‘To close these loops, you wil start by mak- ing a chain one. Simply yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook. ‘To continue with the closing, you will yan ‘over and pull through two loops on the hook. Continue until you end with only ‘one loop on your hook. ‘This completes the foundation row for typ cal patterns. You wil soe it in the Beginner ‘and Novice pattems that accompany this Atticl. They were nothing fancy —just a simple pair of gray felted ballet slippers with button embellish ments—but | cried when | opened the package. There is something about receiving a gift that you know someone spent hours crafting by hand that far outshines a store-bought present. | wear those comfy woo! slippers al the time, and each time | get them out, | get a fuzzy feeling all over, not just in my toes. Children love slippers too, especially if they're warm and cozy—and with a special litle animal face, these slippers come to life! Gram will love whipping up these easy-to-crochet slippers, and her helper will enjoy decorating the face Cf her new friends. These slippers are made to fit sizes 2 to 3, but with hook adjustments or yarn substitution, they can fit smaller or slightly larger feet. Lt your helper pick out the yarn. The yarn used in our pattern is super soft and non-piling, something absolutely nec- ‘essaty for slippers, Bright colors can be used in non-traditional ways —consider making violet bears, bright yellow cats, blue monkeys, or red mice! ‘These slippers are crocheted in rounds starting atthe sole. The slipper part is crocheted onto the sole all in one piece. tall cuff is crocheted separately and sewn on, Ribbing makes the shoes stretchy —leaving the cuff up will create ‘warm and snuggly slipper-shoe boots, while folding it down will make comfy ankle booties. The only other pieces to ‘crochet are animal ears. Choose rounded ears if you want to make a bear— they can also be used for a mouse, beaver, monkey, of even an elephant. Use pointed ears for a cat, fox, tiger, dog, pig, or zebra. Gram has crocheted the puppy slippers and ‘Alice is ready to help her decorate them. if you prefer kitties, the yellow sipper shows different byes, a nose, and whiskers—the pattern tells ‘you how to make those changes, Create your wn fun by thinking up other embelishments ‘or your custom-made slippers. ‘Gram holds the puppy's ear while "i Aloe sews itn place. (Gram has drawn the cicies forthe eyes and nose On the two fet ploves and lets Aloe cut them out 13 83 Crochet 1 “Tomake these slippers, Alice puts a dot of glue on the back ofan eye and applies itt the slipper: She does the same for the pup, which makes the puppy slipper realy come alvel For the final step, Alice turns the slippers over tothe sole side, She then adds siripes or dots of pul paint fo make’ sure her slippers don't slip. (Maybe we should call them *no-slippers"?) 34 crochet 1-203 “The last step in making the puppy's face Is gleing on the litle black nose. ‘The last step in making these slippers really functional is to add stripes of puff paint to the soles. The lines don't have to be perfect, so let yourhelper try it first, After they dry, they'li make, the slippers safe and non-slip. ‘These slippers look adorable, feel comfortable, and represent another of Gram and her helper's fabulous collaborations.
