The Ghost that helped fight the UK’s war on drugs

Martha’s eyes opened. In the outside world, she heard strangely familiar sounds. They were almost like the
machinery which could be heard inside of a cotton mill, where the now deceased person worked. She drifted
to her window; the curtains still closed. She put her head through the curtains, as she didn’t want to move
them, in fear of being seen. She leered in disgust and angst. Outside she saw a white carriage, with grey
highlighting, and a glass façade. There was a small sign on the front, which read: SB53 XKL.

Martha was looking at a van. A White, Ford Transit Van.

Out from the vans came two slender men. They wore dark grey tracksuits and had weathered faces. They were
young, however. They stepped out of the van with confidence, and went to the back of their vehicle, to look at
their cargo. Martha caught a glimpse of the cargo that the suspicious looking men were carrying. Lots of small,
clear packets. Martha was not sure what they were, but they were reminiscent of opium. She immediately
suspected them to be drugs, but what drugs were they?

The Ghost then decided to try to see what the suspicious looking men’s plan was. They had strange machinery,
a lot of plants, which presumably these drugs came from, and some electrical equipment. Martha immediately
saw her window of opportunity. She was very good at one thing – affect the world around her. She could make
light bulbs turn on and off and use keyboard computers. The men went away to get more things from the van,
and she swiped one of their laptops away. She took it upstairs, to her bedroom. She opened it, and…

A problem quickly arose. It required a password.

Martha knew that most people’s passwords were easy to derive and tried the most obvious passwords first.

“PASSWORD” – denied.

“IMNOTADRUGDEALER” – denied.

“DEALERorNODEALER” – BEEP!

She was in.

Martha went to the owner’s emails and discovered lots of mail in their inbox. Martha saw that these were the
dealer’s clients, and that he was arranging a place to manufacture his drugs. He was one of the biggest drug
dealers in the UK. He sold a range from cannabis to cocaine and crystal meth. Martha had no clue what these
were, as she was only familiar with opium, which was big in her day.

The Ghost/Detective now knew that she had to put a stop to whatever vile deed these men were plotting or
corroborating in. She had recently heard of a thing called “Text to Speech” from her best friend Pat, and she
had an idea. She would call the police, report the drug dealer’s Base of Operations using the text to speak
voice, and get their cruel operation taken down and destroyed. She just needed a phone.

One of the men who were unloading left their phone in the main entrance to the building, and she went to go
and retrieve it. “Perfect!” she said to herself as she pressed the emergency button. She played the text to
speak message. It said: “Hello, my name is Martha, and I am a ghost. I am reporting some men unloading their
drug appliances into the house which was formerly in my name. The leader of the operation is Roberto Spinn. I
need your force to come here urgently and stop this plan from ever taking roots. The place in question is
Belroy House. Please come as soon as you can, as it is an emergency!”

There was silence as the phone hung up.

A mere 10 minutes later, Martha heard shouting outside as she clambered back into bed. “ARMED POLICE,
STAY WHERE YOU ARE”, they boomed. Martha poked her head out the window and saw the two men being
arrested and handcuffed on her driveway. She knew that she had managed to take down one of the many drug
dealers in the UK, and that she was a local hero. Martha felt proud. Even though she could not do much as a
ghost, she could put a stop to one of Britain’s biggest problems.
The men were put on trial for possession of class A drugs with intent to supply, murder, manslaughter, theft,
and several other crimes. They were both found guilty, and a few months later, the ringleader of the drug
operation was arrested and also given a life sentence. Over the coming months, Martha saw hundreds of
banners outside her house from members of the public, thanking her for her work. She was like an invisible
saviour, who cared for the world that the visible lived in. Everyone knew her name. She strived to be the best
person she could be, and inspired others to do so as well.
