Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKROUND

Context and Rationale

According to (Yu, Tepper & Russell, 2009) that “Peer acceptance

represents social status or popularity within a large group, whereas friendship

represent relationships based on mutual respect, appreciation, and liking.”

Both peer relationships and friendships become increasingly important as

children grow into adolescence. Experiencing positive peer relationships and

friendships contribute to positive self-image, social competence and

academic achievements, among other outcomes, and may act as a buffer

against the negative impact of family troubles. Young people who find it

difficult to develop such relationships are more likely to be aggressive, lonely

and depressed.

10

Grulund (1990) feel that acceptance by peer group improved social

relation. These have beneficial effects on individual learning insecurity that

arises from satisfying emotional tension enables him to concentrate more on

his assigned learning tasks. This indicates that acceptance by the group may

have positive effect on the child. A child who is not brilliant enough may do

better if he is accepted by a group that is inclined to study. It has been

observed that a child learns more easily within his peer group. Where he is

wrong, he prefers to be corrected by a member of his peer group that by the

teacher.

Unfortunately, peer relationships are not always beneficial to the child:

between 5% and 10% of children experience chronic peer relationship

difficulties, such as peer rejection and harassment. In the last 20 years, there

has been substantial research aimed at understanding the nature, meaning

and impact of peer relation problem. Most of this research effort has been

centered on school-age children. Yet a growing number of children are

exposed to peers early in their life through daycare. Early peer relations are

thus highly relevant to social policy issues and should be an object of

persistent attention.

Some researchers indicated that there is an awareness of the

importance of family on pupil’s/student’s academic performance. In the view

of Ajila and Otula (2000), the state of the home affects the individual since the

parents are the first socializing agents in an individual’s life. Although, the

school is responsible for the experiences that make up the individual’s life

SAN FRANCISCO INHS – JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

11

during school periods, yet parents and the individual’s experiences at home

play tremendous roles in building the personality of the individual and maling

him that he is. Thus, Ichado (1998) concluded that the environment in which

the student comes from can greatly influence his performance in school, in

which, the environment is the family that has been recognized as having a lot

of influence on the academic performance of students ( Newuahwah, 1993).

Other aspects of parental environment such as the structure of the family has

been grossly neglected. Yet, Ichado (1998) started that parent’s constant

disagreement affects children emotionally and this could lead to poor

academic performance in school.

Theoretical Framework

Conceptual Framework

The Conceptual Framework is presented in the form of a paradigm

below; Figure 1 shows the research paradigm of the study. Frame 1 consists

of Independent Variables which are the profile namely Gender, Peer Group

and Social Economics Status. Frame 2 consists of the Dependent Variable

contained Academic Performances.

Statement of the Problem

How does the profile influence on the academic performances of

Grade-8 students in San Francisco integrated national high school

1. What is the profile to the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Gender ; and

1.2 Socio-Economic Status

2. What is the perceived Quality of respondents peer Relationships?

3.What is the respondent and level of interest in studying?

4.Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the

respondent and their perceived Quality of peer relationship?

5. Is there any relationship between the respondents perceived

Quality of peer relationships and their level of interest in studying?

13

Scope and Limitations

The study is focuses on determining the influence of Perceived

Quality of Peer Relationship on the Interest in Studying of Grade 8 students in

San Francisco Integrated National High School. The respondents of the study

were Grade-8 students from the sections: Antipolo, Lipa, Lucena, and

Cabuyaw. Questionnaire was used to gather information from the

respondents. This study was conducted from October to December 2019.

Significance of the Study

The result of the study maybe used to educate in the field such as:

To the students of San Francisco- this study provide information on

how peer group influence their interest in studying. With this, it is very

important to know how do peer group influence them in terms of their

behavior and interest in studying.

Parents- This study provide information on how peer group influence

the interest and a behavior of their children. In that way guardians will have

more to spend to their children and educate them.

Operational Definition of terms

SAN FRANCISCO INHS – JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

14

Interest in Studying

It refers to the class standing of the respondents measured through

likert scale for assessing academic performance. The likert scale was

composed of Five (5) descriptors focusing on how the respondents spent their

vacant time in doing assignments, how they exert effort when they do difficult

assignments, how they study the lesson they missed when they were absent,

how they study and prepare for the test and how they do their assignments

regularly by how gender and socio-economics status influence to the

students.

Gender

It refers to the characteristics of the respondents described if they are

a Male or Female

Peer Group

It is a kind of a group that have a equal standing with another, it also

influence the behavior of the members of this group in a negative or a positive

way.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Related Studies

As Weerakkody ( 2008),that in all course units considered female

students tend to perform better at university examination than their
male counterparts. Halpern (2002), the more exposure that women
are getting to math and science classes, the better their scores. E
er differences still exist in academic achievement, many
researchers are still finding differences in performance as well.
Mwiigi (2014), Finding revealed that by overall performance, male
students performed much better as compared to their female
counterparts. At subject level, girls outperformed boys in the
languages, while boys led the girls in the sciences. The majority
views of students (56%), male teachers (65%), head teachers
(76%), and directors (82%) agreed and strongly so that, boys
perform better than girls, only a total of 51% of female teachers
disagreed andstrongly so with this view. There were significant
gender differences by overall performance with more boys passing
in form 1 and 2 as compared to the girls in the same divisions. At

SAN FRANCISCO INHS – JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

16

subject level girls attained a higher mean average mark in the

languages as compared to the boys. Conversely, boys scored
higher mean average in the sciences than girls.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method

This quantitative research used survey method to determine the

influence of Peer Relationship on the interest in studying of selected junior

high school students of San Francisco Integrated National High School.

Research Instrument

The main instrument used in the study was a survey questionnaire.

The researcher found out that survey questionnaire is fit to collect the data

about the stated problem. The researcher saw that there were enough items

to cover all aspects of the problem. The instrument consisted of: First, peer

group relationship which inclined the gender and socio-economics status.

Second, the Interest in Studying of Grade 8 students.

Research Samples and Sampling Technique

This study involved the population of all class sections in Grade-8 in San
Francisco Integrated National High School. Out of four (4) sections which is

SAN FRANCISCO INHS – JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

17

Lipa, Lucena, Tayabas and Cabuyaw, only two (2) sections with 30 students

were optionally selected.

According to Mosrur (2012), random sampling is subset of individuals

chosen from larger set. Each individual is chosen randomly and entirely by
chance, such that individual has the same probability of being chosen at any
stage during sampling process.

Research Locale

San Francisco Integrated National High School is a medium-size public

secondary school in the District of Victoria, Division of Laguna. The school

SAN FRANCISCO INHS – JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

18

offers complete junior high school and senior high school programs. Currently

the schools has a total population of 625 that is 518 junior high school

students and 107 senior high school students.

At present the school is headed by Mrs. Ma. Aurea Nonita E. Origines,

Principal II duly assisted by assistant principal-designate, Mr. Arturo D.

Herradura, Head Teacher I. The school has a total of 27 teaching and 7 non-

teaching personnel.

Statistical Tools

The researcher used formula of Frequency and Percentage to answer

the Specific Question number 1. For Specific Question number 2 and 3 we

will used Weighted Mean, Specific Question no. 4 use Chi Square and for the

last Specific Question the researcher will use Regression. The Formulas used

to described the profile of the respondents in terms of gender and socio-

economic status. The formulas used are shown below
