As they speak out for the first time, their historical allegations are disturbing - and horribly similar © many families in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax, Dr Thomas P Cairns was the epitome of the genial, trusted family GP. Nothing seemed too much effort for the twicemorried father-of five. But the Irish-born Catholic GP, who practised in the town between the 1970s and 1990s, hid a terrible secret. She took it down a short while later = but not before she claims seven women had contacted her. "One said he had done something to her but she had ‘come to terms with it, Another wrote she would have to think about sharing her information,” says Marie. In my opinion, Cairns was « prolific paedophile. It is real life ‘amazing how 15 minutes can change your life, but he won't destroy me. However, Marie was not his first victim. Sarah and Janet [whose names have been changed to protect their identity] have been best friends for many years ‘and have shared all life's milestones since meeting at 11. But Sarah, 60, and Janet, 59, hid one secret trom each other for decades ~ they too claim they were both victims of Dr Cairns when they were underage. “One day in our 40th birthday year, we cautiously ‘opened up as we sat reminiscing about our lives, recalls Sarah. “Neither of us looked ot the other as we sot in the car,” Janet adds. “My marriage had ended cand | told Sarah | had issues which impacted on the marriage caused by Cairns. Sarch just blurted out ‘Oh my God, that happened fo me too.’* > Notebook 23 It turned out that both girls — then aged 15 — claim they were regularly attacked over the same petiod of several years and Cairns used the exact same method to assault them, even down to the instructions he gave. Both women claim his assaults led to them suffering anxiety and two marriage breakdowns for Janet, who also attempted to take her own life at one point. “Lwas 15 when | went to see him os | was hoving heavy periods,” Sarah Te time and he put me on the Pill, He told me to come back in six months after surgery closed at 6.30pm.” Sarah attended on her own and claims, “I had to o down the back alley to es ‘open yard. | Tnocked on the window and he let ime in, No one else ‘was there. “He told me to go behind @ curtain, get completely undressed and stand on the scales to get weighed. He came back in very relaxed and wrote out my prescription.” Cairns knew Sarah was from @ Catholic family cand she would not want her parents to know she was having sex with her boyfriend, who she went con to marry. She could not go to «nearby GP as her mother worked there, so for more than 10 years Sarah had appointments every six months with Cairns. She claims his assaults went con from 1977 to 1988 a he told Sarch what he wos doing was normal “Tknew no different, she says, sadly. "wed at 21 and began taking my husband to appointments with me, Cairns made him stay in the wailing room while he continued to assault me just feet away. He never once wore gloves as he ‘examined’ me. Sorch blocked Cairns from her mind, but she found herself reliving the trauma after the death of TV star and paedophile Jimmy Savile in 2011 “Janet and | wished wo'd reported Cairns when he was olive, but it sill took several years for us fo call the NSPCC, which we did in May 2022. They immediately arranged for the police to see us and in June 2022 they took our statements. The detective asked me if Cairns wore gloves and when | said no, she soid if he was alive they would be bringing him in for sexual assault on that basis alone.” Sarah contacted lawyer Victoria Neale. “I wanted Cairns exposing,” says Sarah. “She told me | was. eligible for compensation, but that was not my priority.” Ms Neale, of Pepperells Solicitors, told Sarah it would take 12 to 18 months to get any money but within ‘two months, Sarah was awarded the highest level of damages available for the category of Caims' crime, The CICA refuses fo say if cther people have been compensated for the GP’s ‘assaults. For Sarah, it meant she was believed. “Cairns was evil,” she says. At 15, Janet had a boyfriend ond asked the GP to put her on the Pill. Again, he booked her in as the last ‘appointment of the day. “His surgery was always cold,” she recalls. "He told me to take my clothes of ‘As he weighed me, he put his hands on my hips and muttered, "Your boyfriend is very lucky ~ you're very trim.’ He turned me around cand aggressively examined my breasts. | laid on the bed cand he inserted his gloveless fingers into me as far as he could go, deeply, painfully rooting about inside me. | hated it. He left the room, I now believe to masturbate,” Cairns told Janet to go back in six months when she cloims the same assault took place. He told her she may have an ovarian cyst and put her on antibiotics. That meant she had to return every three weeks for a checkup where she claims he assaulted her — and he _gove her at least three further courses of medication. “I'm convinced | never had a cyst. It was his excuse to attack me.” The abuse lasted from 1977 to 1982 until a bythen married Janet moved house and changed surgery. In her thirties, she plucked up the courage to tell her spouse. She began counselling and was diagnosed with PTSD. Five years ago, she tried to kill herself “That was my lowest point,” Janet says. “I suspect he has abused dozens more young females who can’t face speaking out.” Another woman who has come forward is Donna, 57. Suffering heavy periods since the age of 11, her mum took her to Dr Cairns in 1977 to be put on the Pil “Mum come with me to the first appointment as was only 12,” says Donna. “He gove me 0 threemonth prescription and told me to come back after that time so he could check up on any possible side elfecs.” ‘At the age of 13, Donna went on her own to the surgery's back door, as he instructed. “He syringed m tony, bzartely, hen ft my chest for any infection as | was coughing. He then warmed his hands at the three-bar electric fire before feeling my breasts,” she says. "He told me to remove my clothes and lie on the bed. It wos not until my thirties | realised I'd been ‘abused and | felt ashamed W's token me years to come to terms with what he did.” ‘Ms Neale says she has been contacted by five ‘women in relation to Cairns. “My first client in this matter had lived with this for years and in fact contacted ime out of the blue os a result of previous media calling for victims to come forward in a similar case,” she explains. “To be successful in recovering compensation, there needs to have been a reporting to the police of a criminal act, which is investigated and {ully supported by the victim. The claims are based on the civil burden of proof being on the balance of probabilities when perpetrators have deceased ‘and ths is based on evidence compiled by the police during their investigation.” She says that in coses where a perpetrator has died, the evidence from the victims is paramount - ond there is strength in numbers “The more unconnected people coming forward giving the same key pieces of information strengthens evidence beyond doubt that the historic abuse took place — which is exactly what has happened in this case.” ‘West Yorkshire Police told us it did not take enquiries regarding named individuals "We can neither confirm nor deny the information sent,” «spokesman said.
