2 - OPERATOR FOCUS
2.1 Operator Training WARNING
Operator using the transporter:
Untrained operators can cause injury or be injured.
● must read and understand this manual. Permit only trained personnel to operate the transporter.
● must have training on proper use of the transporter. An unlocked undercarriage can cause injury. Make sure
● must have a training on emergency-medical service and emergency the undercarriage is locked before releasing the safety
patient-handling procedures. bar from the safety hook.
● must have the physical ability to assist the patient.
● must practice with the transporter before using it with a patient.
● must keep training records. For a sample training record sheet, see
“Training Record” on page 22.

2.2 Operator Height and Strength

During unloading, the Control-end Operator must lift and hold the
weight of the transporter, patient and equipment high enough for the
wheels to remain off the ground until the undercarriage legs completely
unfold and lock into place.
Supporting this weight requires greater strength from short operators
than from tall operators because short operators must raise their arms
higher in relation to their shoulders (Figure 1).
If the ambulance is parked on an uneven surface, the Control Operator
(and any helpers) may need to lift the transporter higher than normal to 1
allow the legs to unfold completely and lock.
Use additional help as needed to lift the weight of the transporter,
patient and equipment. See “Using Additional Help” on page 7.

2.3 Daily Operator Duties

It is good practice for operators to check equipment at the start of each
work shift. To check the transporter prior to use, follow the procedures
described in this manual:
● Unload the transporter from the ambulance.
● Fold the transporter to the floor or ground.
● Raise the transporter to a suitable rolling height.
● Visually inspect the transporter for readiness. See “Inspecting the
Transporter” on page 19.
● Rotate the transporter in a circle to verify it rolls easily.
● Load the transporter into ambulance and secure it in the fastening
system.
