A. What is meant if a speech is gender-biased?

Gender Biased is often culturally constructed as well, meaning that what is considered
masculine or feminine in one culture may not hold true in another. How people express their
gender often relies on the cultural constructs of the society in which they live or identify. The
same is said of how people expect certain gender roles to be expressed by others.

B. How do we determine if a speech is gender biased? Provide scenarios or situations to explain

your answer.
Just as you should be conscious of any cultural prejudices that may exist between you and your
audience, you should also be aware of how gender bias may affect your communication. Know
that when a woman speaks in front of a gathering of guys, she is met with a different reaction
than her male counterpart. Men may be disrespectful of a female speaker in specific cultural
situations. Female speakers are frequently required to adopt male mannerisms, language, and
position to establish their authority as speakers.
It's not exactly a race problem, either. Given that many cultures encourage women to be
attentive to men, women may be more at ease with a female speaker, but they may also be
more attentive to a male speaker.
C. What should a speaker do to avoid being gender biased?

Taking a step back and considering what gender bias you bring to the table, as well as what
gender biases your audience may have of you, is a vital first step toward removing or at the very
least addressing gender bias in your speech.
