FWA - mmWave Extended Range

A roadmap…

With the deployments of the 5G SA (Stand-alone) and 5G NSA (Non-

Standalone networks), across the globe, service providers are finding the best
solutions for the high efficiency usage. The FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) is
considered to be one of the inevitable use cases of 5G. Despite the current scenario,
various service providers work on FWA for extending the range of communication for
the maximum coverage for the consumers.

In Jan 2021, Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN), along with its
partners Ericsson, Qualcomm and Casa Systems achieved 1 Gbps, at a distance of
7.3 Kms covering the rural part of the Australia. Later the year 2021The NBN joins
hands with Samsung electronics and Nokia for extending the FWA range upto 10
kms.

In the early 2022, UScellular in partnership with Ericsson is the first service
provider who worked on extended mmWave communication. During their test trial,
they covered the rural part of America covering the extended range of over 5 kms.

Further companies like Qualcomm, Ericsson, UScellular and Inseego together

extended their mmWave FWA range to 7 kms on UScellular’s commercial network in
Wisconsin. It is claimed to be the farthest 5G mmWave fixed wireless connection in
the US.

The technology uses

 Antenna Integrated Radio (AIR) 5322 – Ericsson

 Wavemaker 5G outdoor CPE FW2010 – Inseego
 Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System – Qualcomm
 QTM527 mmWave antenna module – Qualcomm

Where all the components are integrated into fixed wireless access platform.

Recently in November,2022 Telkomsel, Indonasia digital telecommunication

Company, collaborates with Ericsson and Qualcomm to launch their trail of FWA
extending their range up to 7.9 kms with the peak throughput of 1Gbps.
Currently in December 2022, Ericsson and DNB (Digital Nasional Berhad’s)
together achieved a new milestone in the extended FWA covering the range of 5G
upto 11.18 Km at the recent trail in Penang, Malaysia.

Technology Focus

Fixed Wireless Access is one of the Key use cases of 5G eMBB, where it enables
ISPs to provide super-fast internet connectivity. Similarly 5G extended mmWave, an
adaptive of FWA seems to be a breakthrough in the millimetre wave communication
to enhance the 5G coverage area.

The technology focuses on building a 5G base station, antennas for the radio
coverage access, end-user devices for connecting to the 5G base stations and
providing a wireless broadband connection to the users and the network
management system for allocating resources, maintaining the quality of service, and
managing the overall operation of the network.
