Johndro’s Astrology by Bill Meridian Lome Edward Johndro was one of the great astrologers of the last century. Thave found that it is more important to understand his approach to, and concept of, astrology than it is to determine his specific techniques. This outlook can then be applied to astrological work in general. We can learn much about his character and his ideas from the eulogy, from which I shall be quoting, that was begun by his associate, Kenneth Brown; during this task, Brown passed away, leaving Charles Jayne to complete the eulogy. Much of my knowledge of Johndro’s work has come through my twelve-year association with Charles A. Jayne, Jr. Many of Jayne’s concepts were based upon Johndro’s ideas. Brown once stated: “This discovery [about precession}, made by Jayne, was only possible because of Johndro’s work.”" L Edward Johndro, All charts use Koch houses The Man Johundro was born on January 30,1882, the same day as President Franklin D. Roosevelt (see Chart 1). He commenced his study of astrology in July 1908, the same month when his future business partner, Kenneth Brown, was born. He then moved to the West Coast, where he resided until his death in No- vember 1951, his wife dying within one-half hour of him. (Ltwas the same month and year ofthe death of Elbert Benjamine, founder of the Church of Light.) Johndro was a mathematician, physicist, and ra- io engineer. Indeed, he taught the first two subjects professionally. This honed his sctentitic approach to astrology. He was an original thinker who diseov- ered new concepis that tradition-bound astrologers ‘were unwilling to accept. If one of his new discov- eries did not stand up under rigorous testing, he abandoned the idea.’ Jokndro published two books in 1929: The Earti in the Henvens andl The Stars: How and Where They In- {fluence He then authored two bulletins in the early 1980s: A New Conception of Sign Rulership and Astro- Jogient Dictionary, Somewhere in between, he issued a pamphlet about World War One, which was a study in locational astrology. unefudy 2061 « The Mountain Astrologer 88 Johndro met Ken Brown in 1935; their 15-year partnership began in the following yea. With Brown as the con- tact man and Johndro as the calculator and rectifier of charts, they advised busi- xnessimen. In this entire time, the two never mel face-to-face. Today, we know this point as the Vertex. Jayne felt that this point was fated and repre sented matters beyond our control. ‘The discovery of the Vertex was based upon Johndro's GEM dynamic field theory, where G stands for gravity, E for electrical, and M for magnetism. ‘The meridian and the Midheaven corre- lated to gravity, the electrical Ascendant (Antivertex-Vertexaxis) to electricity, and the horizon and the Ascendant to magne- tism. Much ofthis theory was developed through Johndro's work with pre-natal charts such as the conception chart, and Jayne carried on this research. . He wanted to find ‘out which solar eclipse — the one preced ing the crash or the one following it — was connected to the accident, He ruled out the eclipse from April 7 and judged that the October 1 eclipse was the en ‘ergy source. He believed that air travel ‘was ruled by Neptune, that Uranus ruled travel in general, and that Saturn repre- sented gravity. At the time of the later eclipse, Uranus was 120° from a Mars~ ‘Neptune conjunction, Venus was square Uranus, and Satum was 135° from Nep- tune. Hayes Moon—Ascendant Some of the connections are obvious, such as the Mars 15° from Uranus in the case of both Washington and Lincoln, as well as the 15° aspects in Clinton's and Kennedy's charts. The connection of the Sun to Pluto in Andrew Jackson's chart ‘makes sense, considering his battles with the bankers. Kennedy and Lincoln both ‘had the Sun 105° from Uranus, and both ‘men met the same fate, The Fixed Stars @ _josndio’s background asa radioen- incer led him to describe the power of the stars in the following way. He be- lieved that their influence was analogous ohigh-frequency radio waves. The plan- ets had much lower vibratory rates and served to modulate the energy of the stars. Jayne concluded that the planets acted as step-down transformers for the stars and that no ordinary person could directly tap into the star power because ofits purity and intensity. The Precision Astrologer Both Johndro and jayne had the same view of predictive work. They both believed that there was a very precise planetary configuration that described every event. I think that both would agree that it wes possible to predict mi- or events on a day-to-day basis, such as Uncle Harvey going to the den at 4:15 pm. to clean his pipe. This would be a remarkable exercise in predictive work, batit would be Like spending $10 to get ‘$1 worth of information. Both astrolo- gers were opposed to the concept that an event was caused by last week's Sat- umn hit or next week's Uranus transit ‘They disapproved of the idea that Sat- xumn’s past or Uranus's future influence had any effect upon the present event. Both men were masters of rectification. Jayne said that if one could successfully rectify 50 charts, one would become an excellent astrologer. Predictive Techniques Jayne wsed to say that all techniques ‘work — that each had its value in a par- ticular situation, He did not reject any ‘of them. The astrologer had a toolbox of techniques to solve any problem. Thus, Jayne and Johndro spent no time pro- moting one procedure versus another) they chose to test and allow the results to speak for themselves. Solar Arc Johndro used both direct and con- verse solar arcs. To get an idea of his exacting approach, let's Look at his view fon the calculation of solar arcs, He found that there was a qualitative difference between the solar arc as measured ‘ght ascension (RA) and Iie Solr ang ‘measured alony Tite Ei Jat ter showed the public reaction to even ‘Une could precede The other, or they could occur together. For example, the solac are generated by RA could repre- sent a fire ina theater; the solar are gen- erated from the ecliptic produced the public's reaction to the fireand a demand {for greater safety I the ecliptic solar arc ‘occurred fitst, there woutd be a public demand for greater safety in theaters, fol lowed by a fire in a theater, Or, the two could become exact af the same time, leading to the fire and the public reaction being simultaneous. Note that there is no attempt to dliseriminate betiveen the two on an “either-or" basis The effect of an aspeet by direction could be spread out overa period of ime. Therefore, Johndra allowed a “time orb” ofsix days for aspects. Because the Sun's Snorer wae 16 minutes, and the Moon's was 15 minutes, the time orb for directions involving the lights was three ‘months. Solar ares beeame a prime tool in rectification, especially for directing Ura- tus to the angles. Solar arc Uransis hit: fing an angle proved tobea very reliable ‘(mning indicator. Other are ditections were also devel. ‘oped. Jayne developed most ofthese, but his thinking and approach were influ enced by Johndro. Jayne believed that if all techniques were valid, then they must vary a5 to strength and interpreta- tion. Slow techniques, such as sevond= any progressions, were very powerful b ‘Braduat in their effect. They tended to generate conditions. Are techniques were st ‘and more noticeable in effect ‘wane of shorter duralign, These tended fo precipitate events. As we will see, each {technique had its own flavor or tone that differentiated it from the others. Declination, Vertex, and Ascendant Arcs Declination are was developed by Charles Jayne and Eleanor Heseltine. The meaning of declination are came from my conversations with Jayne. The key was that this method pinpointed events better than did other methods. I theorized that declination are did this for the following reason: Declination is mea- sured from the celestial equator, which is derived from the extension of the geo- graphic equator. Thus, itis Earth-based. An Earth-based system is likely to reflect ‘material events rather than changes in emotional or mental states. Such events, are highly noticeable when rectifying charts. Subsequent research has borne this out, une 2001 «The Mountain Astrologer 87 ee —“s——CisCSS Both Johndro and Jayne .., believed that there was a very precise planetary configuration that described every event. Declination arcis calculated by deter- ining the absolute value of the ditfer- ‘ence between the declination ofthe natal and the progressed Suns. Ifthe natal Sun. 4s 20° North, and the progressed decli- nation is 15° South, then one must c ‘culate the distance from 20° North to its, ‘maximum northerly declination (approx- imately 23°26) and add it to the dif- ference from that maximum northerly declination down to the progressed posi- tion at 15° South (see Diagram 1). This value is then added to, or deducted from (for converse progressions), the natal Positions of all planets. Charles Jayne surprised me when he said that this was the most impor- ‘ant ool that they had devised to rectify horoscopes during a study of rectifica- tion techniques in the 1940s, laskect him why this technique might show events mote powerfully than did other more traditional techniques. An answer come from further studies of the predictive ‘techniques that he taught, such as Ascen- dant are and Vertex arc, Ascendant arc is calculated by stib- ‘racting the natal Ascendant from the progressed Ascendant. Vertex arciscom- puted by deducting the natal from the progressed Vertex. These values, like the solar arc, are added to, or deducted from (in the case of converse arts), thena- tal planet positions. Tbecame confused when I was analyzing a chart that had transiting Saturn square natal Venus and Ascendant arc Satum trine natal Venus, ‘Afier some discussion with Jayne and further analysis, I concluded that these techniques must have their own unique Here is an example of Solar Dedination Arc (SDA) in the life of President Richard M. Nikon, He was born on January 9, 1913, at §:35 p.m, PST in Whittier, California (natal chart shown here). The declination of the natal Sun was 22°02’ South. ‘On election day in November 1960, when Nixon lost to Kennedy, the progressed Sun's dedl- nation was 8°37’ South ~ithad traveled 13°25' from its natal dedination. If you add 13°25" (the SDA) to the natal Micheaven (16°03" Gern- inl), you get 29°28", which is within one degree of natal Pluto (28°39 Gemini). (The ‘exact conjunction occurred in September 1958.) Duringthe Watergate investigations of 1973-74, the addition of Nixon's SDA (18°) to his 9th- house Saturn (27°23' Tau- rus) brought that planet to his natal Midheaven. (The ‘exact conjunction wasin March 1974, only five months before his resignation.) Chart 2: Richard M. SDA represents total distance traveled. 3°26" + 23°26" + 15°00" = 41°52" Solar Dectination Arc is 41°52" qualitative flavor. The point was driven home when my Ascendant arc Venus ttined my Jupiter. (Natal Venus is in my 4th house.) was anticipating an inetease in income or an improvement in stock- picking results. Instead, a lady who we much younger than I moved into apartment upstairs in New York City,and_ a relationship developed. She immedi- ately decided that my apartment was too dark and set about lightening it up with flowers. Note that the event took on the Ascendant quality and blended it with ‘Venus and Jupiter. have found that these directions have the strength of slow Mars transits or fast Jupiter transits. From similar types of studies, 1 pre- sented Jayne with the following interpre- tations: Solar Arc: We wit! actions to happen. Qur basic will or self, a5 represented by the Sun, causes us to act. An action i iniiated based upon some inner need to express ourselves. Ascendant Arc: Describes happenings that relate to the Ascendant in all of its meanings. These include relationships, surroundings, and how we conduct our selves. Our surroundings and relation- ships encourage or cause us fo acl. ‘outside ourselves. third party or condi tions impel us to act — we do not origi- inate the action. Events can spin out of our control. To contrast these’ techniques, con- sider that a Metcury-Jupiter contact, for instance, might differ in quality, depend- ‘ing on which predictive method causes the contact: Mercury contacts jupiter by Solar Are: We ‘communicate in order to achieve some result thatis the goal of our inner will, as represented by our Sun, Mercury contacts Jupiter by Ascendant Arc ‘The environment becomes more comunu- nicative, We communicate more with peo- ple in our immediate surroundings. The neighbors talk to us more. Mereury contacts Jupiter by Vertex Are: We are forced to communicate more by others or by cizcumstances. For example, we are served with legal papers that necessitate a reply. Mercury contacts Jupiter by Declination ‘Are: Our book is published or some conn= ‘munication manifests. The key here is that the effect produces a tangible result that is very obvious. The Forecasting Soup When I was @ student, 1 asked : eine re ted ated ‘Las having a difficult time. He put his Commodore computer into action. Page after page of hits ran off finally asked ‘what he was running. Here was the list: ‘Transits Secondary Progressions Solar Arc Directions Ascendant Are Directions Vertex Are Directions Declination Arcs All arcs and progressions were run both direct and converse, by half, whole, and double are. Needless to say, there were lots of exact hits every day I pro- tested, and Jayne told me to shut up, He then proceeded to clearly delineate any- thing of importance that had happened. to me in the previous three weeks — to the day: He said, “You see, Bill, every- thing in astrology works. You just have to know which tool to use to answer the question at hand at any one time.” e Most hits are too weak to be consid- ed. He pointed tothe progressed Moon a5 an example, saying that the elfect lasted one to three days, uniess other fac- tors were involved. As far as secondary progressions go, he believed that there were two that were major. The first was an eclipse by secondary progression. If you were born ten days before an eclipse, then you would experience an eclipse by progression in the tenth year of life. The second was the exact progressed aspect of two outer planets. If you were born with an inexact aspect between two outer planets, then the year when they prog- ‘ess toan exact aspect would be vital. He reckoned that there Were only four or five of these ina typical lifetime. Here are two examples. I was born. with Saturn in the 8th house, sextile Ura- rnus in the 6th, In the year when they progressed to exactitude, I began to com- pulerize my financial astrology, not real- izing, atthe time, that this would have major impact upon my life, Recently, ‘one of my colleagues experienced the same type of progression. He was born ‘with a Moon-jupiter-Pluto conjunction, When the latter two planets progressed to within minutes of exactitude, his life changed dramatically. The stock fund that he had been managing was taken away from him in a political power play. A female friend in another country informed him of an opening in the insur- ance company that employed her, so he quickly jumped into the new spot A few months later, the woman Teft the com- pany under cloudy circumstances, leav- ing him to manage her fund as well. The company then began to acquire other funds, creating the prospect of yet more ‘money to manage. At the same time, his, wife lost the baby that she was carrying. Blood tests appeared tobe abnormal, and there was.a brief fear that his wife was il. But further testing dispelled this notion, ‘When this colleague told meof his move, ‘interpreted this progression as being 2 ‘rajor turning point in his life that would lead to more than he had hoped. The message here is that there is value in all predictive techniques if they are interpreted in the proper context. Eclipses Tohndtro’s work on eclipses was con- siderable, but most of it was never pub- lished; however, I was able to gain some insight by working with Charles Jayne. I can safely say that the effect of the eclipse begins to stirin a horoscope three manths before it occurs. Jayne sald that, in prac- tice, one could assume that an eclipse had aneffect beginning at least three months before the phenomena and lasting for six months of at least until the next solar eclipse. This latter rule was amended if there were more than one eclipse in a short period of time, such as in 1962. In that year, there were solar eclipses on June21 and July 20. In this case the effect ‘of the June 21 eclipse would not end on July 20; rather, it would be considered to have an effect forat least six months and. possibly as ong as twelve. Lunar eclipses ‘were determined to have an effect for about six weeks on either side of the ‘event, for otal of three months. The statement that an eclipse can have an influence before it occurs may seem odd (o some, Jayne said in 1953: “Ithas also been discovered that a tran- sit to the place of an eclipse is effective within nine months to a year of the time of the eclipse, and this applies to eclipses ‘occurring later than the planetary transit as well as before it takes place.” new Reve Second Eton Sipping Bill Meridian's ~ PLANETARY | TOCK TRADING (ar 1000 horoscopes of ist-rade ‘socks of companies on he NYSE , NASDAQ and FTSE ~ and Mural Funds, Now eon incudes 25% new horoscopes, ps chats ofthe stock cxchanges, Federal Reserva fost fonds, srd new case shdies and rato, $80 US $85 overseas, Send your orders o- Bs Re Sth Ave, G2 AY, NY 10408 "TW DATARASE USED BY ALL NALOR FMANCHAL =" astaotocy sorrwane Paocnans 90 vewwmountainastrologercom As to why this occurs, Edward Johadro wrote in the late 1920s: Time as we habitually conceive it, chronologically and in sequence, a well as our ordinary “conscious- ness rate” by which we apprehend it, arises solely from the orbital and axial revolutions of the Earth.
