Recognizing the contribution art has had in the
Mayo Clinic environment since the original Mayo
Clinic Building was finished in 1914, Mayo Clinic
Proceedings features some of the numerous works
of art displayed throughout the buildings and
grounds on Mayo Clinic campuses as interpreted by
the author.

licia LaChance was born in 1970
and is a self-taught painter and
hometown cofounder of the Hoff-
man LaChance Contemporary art gallery,
located in Maplewood, Missouri.1 Using
winter blue-and-black spiral suns, along
with seeded out dandelions ready to blow in
the wind, and snowflakes, swallows, and se-
quoias, inhabit each quadrant of the

patterns.
LaChance’s Untitled wall-sized painting
appears to a modern uptake and continua-
tion of other large-scale paintings at Mayo
Clinic begun in the 1950s. One example
was depicted in the exemplary series sample
Man and Sea and Earth and Sky by Margo
Hoff, which was located on the 18th floor
of the Mayo Building, but has since been
retired..2

on the subway level of the Gonda Building,
Mayo Clinic campus, Rochester, Minnesota.
