INTERNSHIP DAY-1

PSYCHOLOGY

DEFINITION:

Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior, according to


American Psychological Association. It is the study of the mind, how it
works, and how it affects behavior.

PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIPS :

1]Internships generally give students a variety of treatment and


assessment experiences with different types of patients.

2] An opportunity to engage in consultation, research and community


mental health activities .

3] Internship facilities also offers seminars and lectures

4] By the end of internship students are usually prepared and qualified


to began their career as psychologists.

PSYCHOLOGISTS AS A PROFESSION :

1] A set of techniques which evolve from a science or theory, which


require considerable intellectual activity to employ ,and which must be
applied differently for different problem

2] A code of ethics and a commitment to work for the benefit of


society.
3) Psychologist use their understanding of human behavior to treat
people suffering from mental disorders, trauma or substance abuse
problems. They treats patient through psychotherapy, helping to
relieve symptoms through behavioral change.

*ETHICAL STANDARDS OF PSYCHOLOGISTS

1] Respect the dignity and worth of the individuals and protection of


fundamental human rights.

2] Make every efforts to protect the welfare of those who seek their
services.

3] Psychologist should respect the right to dignity,privacy ,and


confidentiality . Safeguarding information about an individual that has
been obtained by the psychologist in the course of teaching, practice or
investigation such information is not communicated to others unless
certain important conditions are not met.

4] Psychologists respect the integrity and protect the welfare of the


people and groups with whom they work.

5} Establish relationship of trust

6} Be honest in all communications and actions

7]Promise -keeping & Trustworthiness

8] Record keeping and fees

9] Informed consent ,obtaining informed consent involves explaining


what services are offered,what can be the possible risks , and the
patient's right to leave treatment.
10] Disclose private information without consent in order to protect the
patient or the public from serious harm.

*THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP

The term "rapport" refers to the quality of the relationship between


the interviewer and client, or the degree to which they could maintain a
positive and communicative interaction. because the interview is a
communication process, rapport is obviously critical for effective
interviewing. when rapport cannot be established , the accuracy and
sufficiency of the information gathered must be questioned.

* CHARACTERSTICS OF THE PSYCHOLOGIST appear to be associated


with positive relationships and good therapy outcome

1] Accurate empathy- The ability to percieve and communicate


accurately and with sensitivity both the feelings and experiences of
another person and their meaning and significance.

2] Nonpossessive warmth- it invoves liking or valuing the client as he or


she is. the interviewer must regard the client as a worthwhile person
who deserves help and respect,regardless of current problems or
incapacity.

3] Genuineness- In relating to the client ,the interviewer must be real.


that is he or she must be aware of personal feelings and attitudes and
express them honestly.

4] Passion for learning

5]Appropriate Boundaries(Therapeutic relationship)

7]Problem-solving ability

8] Open- mindedness

9] Active listeners
