Unit Outline

present. The Centre for Aboriginal Studies aspires to contribute to positive social change for Indigenous
Australians through higher education and research.
Syllabus
Fundamental differential equations of fluid flow phenomena; Development of viscous flow and drag, and effect of
fluid flow on mass transfer; Flow with pressure gradient; Friction factor analysis; relationship between fluid flow
and heat transfer. Thermodynamics of heat transfer and conductivity of phases based on density/viscosity;
Fundamental differential equations of heat transfer; Combination heat transfer and flow dependent heat transfer;
Increase of heat transfer by extended surfaces; Unsteady state conduction; Meaning of heat transfer coefficient
and analogies between heat and mass transfer; Case studies involving convection; Macroscopic energy balance
for heat exchanger capacity. Relationship between mass diffusivity and thermal conductivity; Fundamental
differential equations for mass transfer; Boundary conditions and diffusion modelling; Combination of mass
transfer with chemical reaction; Convective heat and mass transfer; Laminar flow and turbulent flow mass transfer,
and analogies between viscosity, diffusivity and thermal conductivity; Drying - combined heat and mass transfer.
Introduction
The aim of this unit is to develop fundamental knowledge of momentum, heat and mass transfer in both
theoretical and practical bases. The application of Transport Phenomena towards more practical and broader
chemical engineering context will be covered in this unit.
Tuition pattern:
l Lectures - 2 letures per week. They will be delivered as a mixture of content delivery and classroom
problems.
l Workshops - 1 workshop per week. A batch of students working on a number of focussed numerical
problems in a tutorial style environment with discussion element.
In addition to the weekly classes, all students have the opportunity to contact the Unit Coordinator or teaching
staff for additional consultation. The staffs will be available for both online and face-toface consultation.
Consultation time will be annouced through Blackboard annoucements.

Learning Activities
Time allocation: 5 hours per week (4 hrs per week lectures and 1 hr per week workshop)
Each student is required to put in at least 5 or more hours per week for self study. This should be separate from
workshops, lectures, discussions, meetings, or consultation times. Teaching and learning mode for Transport
Phenomena CHEN3001 will have the following components:
Regular attendance in lectures and workshops is strongly encouraged. Prior reading is encouraged for all lectures
where weekly topics are indicated on the unit study calendar. For online content simply go to Blackboard to attend
the live sessions or access recordings as appropriate. While engineering problem solving often benefits from the
interchange which accompanies a group effort, maximum learning benefit for the student typically results from a
careful balance between serious individual effort and occasional group consultation. As such, students are
permitted to work in small groups to discuss methods and approaches to solving the class/homework problems.
However, students should focus on developing the skills necessary to define and solve problems independently,
as these skills will be required in the tests and exam.

Detailed information on assessment tasks
1.
l Closed-book invigilated mid-semester test.
l It will be conducted in week-6 durring lecture hours.
l Test questions will be from the syllabus covered in first four or five weeks (momentum transport
section).
2.
l This will be a group assignment to be submitted through Turnitin on Blackboard.
l Two students per group is allowed.
l Release date and submission date will be announced on Blackboard
3.
l This will be a closed-book, invigilated final exam.
l The format, date and time of this exam will be announced on Blackboard and will be communicated
by the exam office.
l It will have questions from entrie syllabus covered in lectures, workshops, and in-class examples.
Pass requirements
Each student must achieve a grade/mark greater than or equal to 5/50.

Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.
Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.
Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. A student who is unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time as a result of exceptional
circumstances beyond the student’s control, may apply for an assessment extension on the Assessment
Extension Application Form as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. The form is available on the Forms
page at https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/forms-documents/forms/ and also within the student's
OASIS (My Studies tab – Quick Forms) account.
2. The student will be expected to submit their application for an Assessment Extension with supporting
documentation via the online form.
3. Timely submission of this information supports the assessment process. For applications that are declined,
delayed submission may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why they were not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time
Where an application for an assessment extension is NOT permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit
(refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of
zero depending on the unit permitting late assessment submissions.
Deferred assessments
If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check OASIS for
details.
Deferred examinations/tests will be held from 07/12/2022 to 16/12/2022 . Notification to students will be made
after the Board of Examiners’ meeting via the Official Communications Channel (OCC) in OASIS.
Further assessment
Further assessments, if granted by the Board of Examiners, will be held between 07/12/2022 and 16/12/2022 .

This unit uses IRIS (Intelligent Remote Invigilation System) to monitor student behaviour during online assessments.
Students are required to follow the IRIS set up instructions and use Google Chrome with the IRIS browser
extension to access the password protected assessment (specific instructions listed above are available on
blackboard). During the assessment, IRIS records your video through your webcam, the audio through your
computer’s microphone, and what is showing on your computer’s screen. This is to help ensure the integrity and
fairness of the assessment for all students.
