COMPARISION AMONG SME, ZAPI & DANAHER

CONTROL ALGORITHM

¾ SME compared to ZAPI


ZAPI uses a slip control instead of our Intelligent Torque Control (ITC). The slip control is a simpler control that
its aim is to control the motor speed.

SME with its ITC system is able to control the motors torque directly and also the speed, that is a consequence of
the torque quantity. Having a better control of the motor and its features, we can achieve a better performance of
its applications.
As ZAPI don’t control directly the motor torque, ZAPI try to control it doing an estimation of the reality having
an error grade on its performance.

The advantages of SME control system are:


• Can perform the 0 km/h speed on ramp ( hill-hold);
• Can ensure the best working conditions in all speed range from 0 to 5000 rpm:
o Higher performance in extreme conditions (at very low speed and very high speed),
o Lower thermal dissipation into the motors;
• Smooth and continues conduction during inversion from forward to backward;
• Safety and higher performances in the electronic differential, avoiding dangerous torque changes during
abrupt changes of direction:
o SME system can control the torque quantity on the wheels,
o ZAPI can control only the different speed of the wheels during turning.

¾ SME compared to Danaher:


SME introduced AC system in 1992, instead Danaher launched its first AC control system in 1996.
DANAHER adopted OFC ( Orientated Field Control ), a control algorithm with similar features to SME control
algorithm ITC. Anyway SME has a longer experience in the adaptation of AC Technology into the Lift Truck

field and a wider experience in the real application of this complex control philosophy. During this time SME
has been customizing its technology and developing its software to all the needs of its clients, using the most
modern AC control techniques to improve the performance and operating efficiency.

POWER MODULES TECHNOLOGY

ZAPI & DANAHER use IMS technology however SME uses DCB technology.
DCB is a high sophisticated and well-known technology, used by the silicon chips (mosfets) producers. SME has
been using DCB technology for more than 15 years achieving the necessary experience and getting the specialize
structure to manipulate the DCB technology (clean rooms and special bonding machines). IMS technology use
standards pick&place machines.

Advantages of DCB technology compared with IMS technology


¾ Lower thermal resistance between mosfets and heat sink;
¾ Better heat dissipation;
¾ Lower working temperatures:
o More Reliability,
o Longer life of components,
o Less heat generated:
ƒ No heat sinks,
ƒ No fans (no maintenance from the dust)
ƒ SME recommend to apply its Inverter directly on the painted chassis

SPEED SENSOR

SME developed an Hall Effect Speed Sensor especially dedicated to AC Motors applications.
All our competitors adopted SKF speed sensor: SKF developed its Sensor Bearing for automotive application
into the steering columns.
In AC motors applications the high electromagnetic field and the high working temperature ( around 120°C )
cause a lot of problems to SKF sensor and a very low reliability. A lot of AC lift trucks users agree that it was
easier to substitute brushes in DC motor ( programmed maintenance ) than substitute speed sensor every 1-2
years ( random maintenance ).
Moreover to substitute the SKF Speed Sensor is a very long and specialized operation ( to remove the motor
from the lift truck, disassembly the motor and to extract the speed sensor with a special equipment ).

SME solved all these problems with a dedicated Speed sensor:


• Integrated filter to protect the Sensor from spikes due to the high electromagnetic field
• Lower working temperature achieved thanks to:
o External position of the speed sensor,
o low heat transmission material used for the external case of the sensor.
• Easy substitution in case of damage ( it is enough to remove 4 screw )

TWIN DRIVE SYSTEM ADVANTAGES

• Electronic differential: with our control torque system we can control the torque of each wheel like a
real mechanical differential but we can ensure perfect functioning until 90° steering angle
• Safety system: with electronic differential we can reduce the torque on the wheels depending on the
steering angle to ensure that the truck will be stable in every condition
• Efficiency: two motors ensure lower functioning temperatures compared with one motor
• Lower cost: small motors production is simpler, faster and economically convenient

CONCLUSIONS

Thanks to Intelligent Torque Control, thanks to inverters made with DCB technology (no heat sinks, no fans)
and thanks to high efficiency motors with dedicated speed sensor, SME complete system is the only real,
unlimited life and maintenance free solution in the market.
