Anwar names Umno’s Ahmad Maslan, DAP’s Steven Sim as deputy finance ministers
Shahrin Aizat Noorshahrizam

Malay Mail
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — Umno’s Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and DAP’s Steven Sim were both
named as deputy finance ministers in the line-up Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar
Ibrahim unveiled today.

The Umno secretary-general was the first name to be read from Anwar’s list of
deputy ministers who will be sworn in tomorrow afternoon.

Ahmad Maslan was previously deputy finance minister to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Aside from the two, other notable appointees include former Melaka chief minister
Adly Zahari as the deputy defence minister, Liew Chin Tong as deputy international
trade and industry minister, as Umno’s Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah as the
deputy home minister.

The appointments appear to be a strategy of check-and-balance as the deputy

ministers were from parties different from the ministers who were announced last
week.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) as a coalition controls seven portfolios: Agriculture and Food
Security (DAP’s Chan Foong Hin as Amanah president Mohamad Sabu’s deputy), Youth
and Sports (PKR Youth chief Adam Adli as DAP’s Hannah Yeoh’s deputy), and
Communications and Digital (DAP’s Teo Nie Ching as PKR information chief Fahmi
Fadzil’s deputy).

Others include Education (DAP’s Lim Hui Ying as PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek
deputy), Local Government and Development (PKR’s Akmal Nasrullah as DAP’s Nga Kor
Ming’s deputy), Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (PKR vice president
Saraswathy Kandasamy as Upko’s Ewon Benedict’s deputy) and Domestic Trade and Cost
of Living (PKR’s Fuziah Salleh as Amanah’s Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub’s deputy).

However, Umno was given full control of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, with Kimanis
MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin as Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir’s deputy.

The remaining deputy ministers named by the prime minister were:

Deputy Economic Minister – GPS’ Mukah MP Hanifah Taib

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister – DAP’s Iskandar Puteri MP Liew
Chin Tong

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) –
DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh

Deputy Defence Minister – Amanah’s Alor Gajah MP Adly Zahari

Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister – Amanah’s Raj Munni Sabu
@ Aiman Athirah Al Jundi

Deputy Health Minister – GPS’ Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni

Deputy Works Minister – BN’s Lipis MP Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad

Deputy Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister – Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s Batu Sapi MP
Khairul Firdaus Akhbar Khan

Deputy Local Government and Development Minister – PKR’s Johor Baru MP Akmal
Nasrullah Mohd Nasir

Deputy Higher Education Minister – Warisan’s Lahad Datu MP Mohammad Yusof Apdal

Deputy Human Resources Minister – PKR’s Sepanggar MP Mustapha Sakmud

Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister – BN’s Beaufort MP Datuk Siti Aminah
Aching

Deputy Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister – GPS’ Datuk
Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
Anwar’s unity government has a total of 55 ministers and deputies, which is nearly
a third smaller than the 70 and 71 in Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri
Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, respectively.

Previously, Anwar pledged to have a smaller Cabinet and to turn down his monthly
salary in a show of solidarity with Malaysians still facing a cost-of-living
crisis.

Earlier this week, Anwar also announced that his ministers agreed to take a 20 per
cent monthly pay cut in light of the current national economic crisis.

England exit World Cup after Harry Kane misses late penalty in loss to France
Simon Peach, PA Chief Football Writer, Al Khor
Sun, 11 December 2022 at 1:23 am·4-min read
Harry Kane missed a late penalty as England’s World Cup dreams ended in a
heartbreaking defeat to reigning champions France in a blockbuster quarter-final
clash.

Having reached the semi-finals in 2018 and finished as runners-up at last year’s
European Championship, Gareth Southgate’s men were dreaming of a mouthwatering
semi-final against Morocco.

England’s hopes were dashed by Aurelien Tchouameni’s early thunderbolt, only for
Kane to level from the spot and equal Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record for the
national team.

Harry Kane reacts at full-time

Harry Kane reacts at full-time (Adam Davy/PA)
France’s all-time scorer Olivier Giroud restored the World Cup holders’ lead and it
proved to be the winner after Kane blazed over a late penalty in a crushing 2-1
quarter-final exit.

England have a long history of costly spot-kick misses but normally those issues
arise in shootouts, like the agonising Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy last summer.

Southgate is contracted until next the European Championship and this may well
prove his final World Cup match in charge – a night when his players rallied
impressively after falling behind for the first time in Qatar.

Tchouameni’s thunderous drive from distance flew in just 17 minutes into the game
after calls for a foul on Bukayo Saka in the build-up fell on deaf ears.

Aurelien Tchouameni puts France ahead

Penalty appeals for a Dayot Upamecano foul on Kane were also ignored after the VAR
concluded the decision occurred outside the box, but Southgate’s side heeded his
advice to remain composed and robust.

England deservedly drew level when Tchouameni upended Saka early in the second
half, with Kane beating Hugo Lloris to move level with Rooney’s all-time record of
53 goals.

Giroud put Didier Deschamps’ side back ahead in Al Khor, only for Theo Hernandez’s
clumsy challenge on Mason Mount to bring another penalty after referee Wilton
Sampaio reviewed the pitchside monitor.

But Kane found the Al Bayt Stadium stands rather than the net, meaning England are
packing for home rather than preparing for a third successive semi-final in major
competitions.

Covid-19.

The settlement's community development and safety committee head Marina Danker said
preparations were being made to host a Christmas party in the next few days and her
organising team is hoping to woo hundreds of local kids to join the event.

“We will turn this Yuletide into a joyful occasion for the children and the rings
of jingle bells will reverberate more greatly at the settlement this year,” she
said in an interview on Sunday (Dec 11).

Danker said the toys and food would be also distributed to the children and those
who are interested to join the party can buy the coupons.

“We will organise the Christmas events at the settlement with whatever resources
are available and we welcome sponsors to make the festive season more meaningful
for the kids.

“The annual Christmas celebration at Portuguese Settlement is set to be merrier

Danker said the decoration work to turn the settlement into a Christmas fairyland
would start by this weekend.

"The spirit of Yuletide will not relent and decorations at the homes of revellers
will adorn the Settlement like in the previous years," she said.

Danker said this year's celebration would also witness the community and local
leaders coming together collectively to celebrate Christmas.

She said she always believed in uniting the community and would invite leaders from
all political divides to turn the Yuletide into a memorable one.

“We welcome all to the country's only traditional Portuguese village.

"The usual activities and performances during the Christmas season will be

She said Christmas this year would be a lively affair despite there being no major

for the “little revellers” had been put on hold for the past three years due to

“The annual Christmas celebration at Portuguese Settlement is set to be merrier

this year with various events being planned,” she said.

"The usual activities and performances during the Christmas season will be
continued," she said.

She said Christmas this year would be a lively affair despite there being no major
sponsors who have come forward to co-organise events or a large-scale celebration.

Danker said Christmas would be turned into a meaningful celebration at the

settlement and would continue to be a tourist attraction during the festive season.

She said an annual event for elderly folks at the settlement would also be
organised once there was a sponsor.

Danker said the community would also continue their legacy of holding prayer
sessions during the Yuletide season.

It is a customary practice for settlers to light up the settlement, a week before

Christmas to showcase multiple Yuletide decorations to thousands of visitors and
foreigners who would usually throng the site to witness a colourful celebration.

ugo Lloris, (left) celebrates after Harry Kane’s penalty miss (Nick Potts/PA)
Both managers named unchanged sides in Al Khor and it was a cagey start to a match
that came to life with a stunning 17th-minute strike after Upamecano got away with
a foul on Saka.

France continued down the left and Kylian Mbappe darted inside, collecting a return
pass before riding a Declan Rice challenge.

England managed to get players behind the ball but the midfield did not get out in
time to close down Tchouameni, whose stunning laser from around 25 yards flew home.

It was an early gut punch but Southgate’s side responded impressively, with Lloris
smothering a Kane effort before Upamecano was left breathing a sigh of relief.

The France centre-back clearly caught the England skipper but the VAR decided
contact occurred outside the box.

England continued undeterred. Kane saw an effort from around 25 yards stopped by
Lloris and Jude Bellingham had a stunning half volley tipped over early in the
second half.

Southgate’s side would be rewarded for their positive work in the 54th minute.

Saka was sent tumbling by a Tchouameni challenge, leading referee Sampaio to point
straight to the spot. A long delay followed but Kane kept his cool to send
Tottenham team-mate Lloris the wrong way.

Harry Kane tucked home from the penalty spot

Pickford prevented Adrien Rabiot from immediately putting France back ahead before
England piled on pressure.

Lloris saved low shots from Saka and Kane, before Harry Maguire met a free-kick
with a header that skimmed the outside of the post.

England were looking most likely to score but had Pickford to thank for keeping the
scores level when Giroud met a Dembele header back across goal with a volley.

The veteran would not be denied for long as Griezmann swung a stunning cross over
for Giroud to head home from close range via a slight touch off of Maguire.

Olivier Giroud heads home what proved to be the winner

Mount had already been preparing to come on and made an immediate impact when
finally introduced.
Having inexplicably waved play on after Hernandez barged over the substitute, the
VAR informed referee Sampaio to check the monitor. The Brazilian pointed to the
spot after reviewing footage as fans chanted “you’re not fit to referee”.

Kane would have broken Rooney’s record with the goal and injected renewed hope, but
was instead left distraught after blasting his 84th-minute spot-kick over the bar.

It was a gut punch that England could not respond to, toiling in attack on a night
that ended with substitute Marcus Rashford seeing a free-kick 10 minutes into
stoppage time landing on the roof of the net.

Another impressive tournament display, another missed opportunity.

STARPICKS
FUN AND GAMES ROADSHOW TO DRIVE CRYPTO AWARENESS
Ilham Centre executive director Hisommudin Bakar opined that the Padang Serai
result was the continuation of the euphoria of the rise of Perikatan.

“It confirms that the support of Malays for Perikatan has reached a phenomenal
level. Pakatan failed to stop the rise of Perikatan. It lost a seat, which used to
belong to PKR since 2008, with an embarrassing majority,” he said.

While agreeing that the Padang Serai result showed that Green Wave still existed
after GE15, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia political analyst Dr Mazlan Ali noted
that the support for Pakatan has not reduced but slightly increased. In GE14,
Pakatan got 31,724 and in GE15, 35,377.

“But there was an increase of voters – about 50,000 – and most of the new voters,
including the Undi18 segment – voted for Perikatan. This trend will continue,” he
said.

Hisommudin observed that Perikatan’s main campaign narrative in Padang Serai was
that Pakatan’s coalition government partner, Umno, could not be trusted to defend
the Malays.

“They were told they should support Perikatan as it is a new force which is clean
and free of corruption, and its leaders could be trusted,” he said.

The Ilham analyst contended that Pakatan couldn’t counter the narrative as it had
accepted Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Perikatan sang the Altimet song ‘Siapa Sokong Penyamun’ (who support the bandit)
to mock Anwar’s action to take the Court Cluster for the top position in his
government,” he said.

Hisommudin also said that Pakatan and Barisan were slow to counter the Perikatan
narrative as they were busy forming the new government.

“Even though there was a last-minute counter attack by Anwar to reveal that
Perikatan allegedly receineral Election (GE15) – Kedah – and northern and east

“They were told they should support Perikatan as it is a new force which is clean
and free of corruption, and its leaders could be trusted,” he said.

The Ilham analyst contended that Pakatan couldn’t counter the narrative as it had
accepted Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Perikatan sang the Altimet song ‘Siapa Sokong Penyamun’ (who support the bandit)
to mock Anwar’s action to take the Court Cluster for the top position in his
government,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the reminder was not a political gimmick but rather his
confidence that he can free the country of corruption.

Anwar reminded every politician to prove that the political arena is not a platform
to show off their wealth or power, which will only cause a dispute over the
authority of Islam.

"I want to prove there are Malays who use their power to defend Islam; I want to
prove there are Malays who uphold the principles of mercy and justice in Malaysia.
We must always be vigilant so that division can be avoided,” he said.

ALSO READ: Govt will remain consistent in fight against corruption, says Anwar

Anwar said he would also ensure entities such as the Attorney General’s Chambers
and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) are always transparent in
carrying out their duties, apart from the fact that no one can escape the
punishment meted out by the court.

The Prime Minister said he had been given the mandate to lead in a situation where
the country's debt had exceeded RM1 trillion, which requires better governance.

"I have been given the mandate with regard to the debt of over RM1 trillion from
agencies that were reviewed to find the leakages, and this is not ‘fitnah’
(allegations).

"I’ve worked hard to scrutinise all the files and we will delay several projects,
re-examine or cancel ... if we want to spend, we must be thorough, this is a matter
of governance,” he said.

As such, he said the country must be managed by following the correct rules.

"I remember, for example, that the flood mitigation projects were approved
spontaneously.

"I asked for a postponement and for a review. I will go to the Finance Ministry
tomorrow to re-examine the matter,” he said, adding that the issue of flood
mitigation project approval was true and not mere slander.

On Dec 6, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, had ordered a review of RM7bil
worth of approvals under the RM15bil flood mitigation project that were conducted
through direct negotiations instead of a tender process.

Meanwhile, he called on the roles of traditional Islamic institutions such as

tahfiz centres and pondok schools to continue to be strengthened as the country’s
defence fortress. - Bernama

Perikatan Nasional supporters celebrated after Datuk Azman Nasrudin from Perikatan
Nasional win in the Padang Serai (P017) parliamentary seat at Kulim Hi-Tech Sports
Complex in Kulim, Kedah.. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star

After winning the Padang Serai election, will the Perikatan wave continue to sweep
the country?

THE rise of the Green Wave continued in the Padang Serai election.

On paper, Pakatan Harapan should have won it as it has held the parliamentary seat
in Kedah since 2008. And on paper, the combined support of Pakatan and Barisan
(whose candidate from MIC withdrew from the contest) should have been more than
enough for PKR to retain the seat.

Perikatan trounced Pakatan with a 16,260 majority votes.

Its candidate, Azman Nasrudin, also Lunas assemblyman won the six-cornered fight
and got 51,637. Pakatan’s Dr Mohamad Sofee Razak (35,377 votes), Barisan’s Datuk C.
Sivarraajh (2,983), Parti Warisan’s Mohd Bakhri Hashim, who also withdrew, (149)
and Pejuang’s Hamzah Abd Rahman (424), Independent candidate Sreanandha Rao (846).

The Perikatan victory was not surprising. It was expected.

In the 15th General Election (GE15) – Kedah – and northern and east coast states in
Peninsular Malaysia – turned green (the colour of PAS, which is the backbone of
Perikatan).

“Even though there was a last-minute counter attack by Anwar to reveal that
Perikatan allegedly received funds from gambling companies. It was to slow down the
Perikatan momentum but failed,” he said.

Mazlan said Perikatan played up the penyamun issue, and Pakatan could not defend
itself as it was in government with Unno.

“Pakatan also did not have any issue to play up as its GE15 campaign narrative –
which is ‘reject kleptocracy’ – could not be used again,” he said.

According to Mazlan, social media, especially TikTok, effectively influenced young

Malay voters to support Perikatan.

“Perikatan narrative on TikTok was related to race and religion, portraying Pakatan
as a liberal movement. The young don’t have the full information, and they believe
information from TikTok,” he said.

Hisommudin forecast that the Green Wave phenomenon would rise and it might sweep
the six states – Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah
– which assemblies automatically dissolve in the middle of next year.

“If the Anwar government do not provide a counter-narrative to the Perikatan

campaign, Perikatan might do well in the six state polls. Perikatan’s support can
peak if it tones down its aggressive campaign on Malay/Islam and wins the support
of non-Malays. Maybe they won’t be afraid of Perikatan,” he said.

Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah will be difficult states for Pakatan and Barisan to
win, while Pakatan states like Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan might be in a
danger zone, Hisommudin said.

Anwar names Umno’s Ahmad Maslan, DAP’s Steven Sim as deputy finance ministers
Shahrin Aizat Noorshahrizam
Fri, 9 December 2022 at 4:40 pm·3-min read
Malay Mail
Malay Mail
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — Umno’s Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and DAP’s Steven Sim were both
named as deputy finance ministers in the line-up Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar
Ibrahim unveiled today.

The Umno secretary-general was the first name to be read from Anwar’s list of
deputy ministers who will be sworn in tomorrow afternoon.

Ahmad Maslan was previously deputy finance minister to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Aside from the two, other notable appointees include former Melaka chief minister
Adly Zahari as the deputy defence minister, Liew Chin Tong as deputy international
trade and industry minister, as Umno’s Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah as the
deputy home minister.

The appointments appear to be a strategy of check-and-balance as the deputy

ministers were from parties different from the ministers who were announced last
week.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) as a coalition controls seven portfolios: Agriculture and Food
Security (DAP’s Chan Foong Hin as Amanah president Mohamad Sabu’s deputy), Youth
and Sports (PKR Youth chief Adam Adli as DAP’s Hannah Yeoh’s deputy), and
Communications and Digital (DAP’s Teo Nie Ching as PKR information chief Fahmi
Fadzil’s deputy).

Others include Education (DAP’s Lim Hui Ying as PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek
deputy), Local Government and Development (PKR’s Akmal Nasrullah as DAP’s Nga Kor
Ming’s deputy), Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (PKR vice president
Saraswathy Kandasamy as Upko’s Ewon Benedict’s deputy) and Domestic Trade and Cost
of Living (PKR’s Fuziah Salleh as Amanah’s Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub’s deputy).

However, Umno was given full control of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, with Kimanis
MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin as Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir’s deputy.

The remaining deputy ministers named by the prime minister were:

Deputy Economic Minister – GPS’ Mukah MP Hanifah Taib

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister – DAP’s Iskandar Puteri MP Liew
Chin Tong

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) –
DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh

Deputy Defence Minister – Amanah’s Alor Gajah MP Adly Zahari

Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister – Amanah’s Raj Munni Sabu
@ Aiman Athirah Al Jundi

Deputy Health Minister – GPS’ Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni

Deputy Works Minister – BN’s Lipis MP Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad

Deputy Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister – Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s Batu Sapi MP
Khairul Firdaus Akhbar Khan

Deputy Local Government and Development Minister – PKR’s Johor Baru MP Akmal
Nasrullah Mohd Nasir

Deputy Higher Education Minister – Warisan’s Lahad Datu MP Mohammad Yusof Apdal

Deputy Human Resources Minister – PKR’s Sepanggar MP Mustapha Sakmud

Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister – BN’s Beaufort MP Datuk Siti Aminah
Aching

Deputy Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister – GPS’ Datuk
Seri Huang Tiong Sii.

Anwar’s unity government has a total of 55 ministers and deputies, which is nearly
a third smaller than the 70 and 71 in Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri
Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, respectively.

Previously, Anwar pledged to have a smaller Cabinet and to turn down his monthly
salary in a show of solidarity with Malaysians still facing a cost-of-living
crisis.

Earlier this week, Anwar also announced that his ministers agreed to take a 20 per
cent monthly pay cut in light of the current national economic crisis.

But Kane found the Al Bayt Stadium stands rather than the net, meaning England are
packing for home rather than preparing for a third successive semi-final in major
competitions.

ugo Lloris, (left) celebrates after Harry Kane’s penalty miss (Nick Potts/PA)

Harry Kane went down under a challenge from Dayot Upamecano

Harry Kane went down under a challenge from Dayot Upamecano (Nick Potts/PA)

Harry Kane tucked home from the penalty spot (Mike Egerton/PA)

Olivier Giroud heads home what proved to be the winner (Peter Byrne/PA)
