EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

There are two different alarms:

1) EVACUATION – 5 minutes of continual short siren sounds

2) LOCKDOWN – One 30 second continual blast of siren

EVACUATION PROCEDURE
WARNING: CONTINUOUS SHORT BLASTS OF THE SIREN
ACTION:
 Close all windows.
 Students are to leave the classroom in an orderly fashion.
 Switch off all lights, fans and other electrical appliances.
 Close the door of the room.
 As a class move in an orderly fashion to the Junior School Oval. Avoid walking near buildings or
under verandahs.
 Students should assemble in Classes (Junior School)/ Houses (Middle School) in the centre of the
Junior School Oval.
 Students should report to their Class/House Teacher upon arrival at the Oval.
 Fire Wardens need to check their specified areas and report to Daily Administrator.
 Class/House Teachers are to count student numbers and report to Daily Administrator.
 Staff not associated with a Class must also report to the Oval.
LOCK DOWN PROCEDURE
WARNING: ONE CONTINUOUS SIREN

A LOCK DOWN would occur when an emergency situation produced circumstances that were
dangerous for students and or teachers to move safely within the school grounds. There are a large
number of such situations and to list them could cause unnecessary concern. In any lockdown the
nature of the situation and the special requirements for management will be communicated via email.

A LOCK DOWN would be signified by A CONTINUOUS BLAST OF THE SIREN.

This contrasts with:

 A short single siren blast to signify lesson change over or to come inside because of wet weather.
 A series of short siren blasts to signify emergency evacuation of the school buildings.

In the event of an emergency, Front Office Staff and the Principal should be informed as soon as
personal safety will permit. The siren shall be rung and Police and Emergency Personnel notified.

When a Lock Down is indicated, the following procedures should take place:
 A teacher and their class should remain in their classroom.
 Windows and doors should be immediately locked (pull down blinds if possible).
 If the door cannot be locked it should be barricaded.
 All people should be gathered together and seated on the floor (below window height) on the
window side of the room (Library – class between stacks).
 Teacher logs on to computer and checks email for any specific instructions.
 The Front Office should be notified of who is in your room being supervised by you via email to
GR.000@trinity.sa.edu.au. The location of any known missing students and where they are
should be included, as should any students from another class.
 A class that is outside should move to the nearest lockable room with a computer.
 Students who are outside when the alarm sounds but not in a class should move to the nearest
occupied room and join with another teacher.
 Students who are in the Library should remain in the Library.
 Students who are having instrumental music lessons, learning support assistance etc, should
remain in the nearest supervised room with a teacher who has access to email.
 Non-contact teachers and non-teaching staff should notify the Front Office of their location via
email to GR.000@trinity.sa.edu.au and remain in a safe area.
 School work should continue as close to normal as possible (this will help keep children calm) –
read a book to students; keeping calm will become more difficult as time passes.
 Communication between rooms during this time will be by email.
 Further instructions will be given by a Senior Staff member visiting rooms or by
police/emergency personnel who have taken charge of the emergency.
 People should not leave the room until the all clear is received. The all clear is signified by 3
blasts of the siren.

Subsequent Actions
 Teachers have students log off computers when the emergency signal sounds.
 Ensure students don’t use their own mobile phones. This is to prevent the situation being
exacerbated by students phoning or texting others either inside or outside the school.
 Invite students in the yard to come into your class room (eg returning from a music lesson, toilet,
errands) and email the office that these students are with you.
 Be aware that students may not leave the room to go to the toilet – you may have to make
emergency arrangements using desks to create some privacy and an empty rubbish bin as a
receptacle.
