The Rules Differ Slightly
✓In the TEEEL paragraph for essays, you must
only present one main idea per paragraph
✓In the TEEEL paragraph for the synthesis
paragraph, you must present a few main ideas
in the whole paragraph
✓ You have to combine sources from both texts
in one sentence if they’re discussing one main
idea
✓There is no need to have an explanation
sentence for every example → you may leave
out a few
✓Be mindful that you have a word limit to
adhere to

Ashley Greig
The Rules Differ Slightly
These are the sentences/types of info
that should be in your synthesis
paragraph:
✓Topic sentence (TS)
• Only ONE sentence → the first sentence of the
paragraph
• You are not allowed to have citations here →
can be rephrased from the question itself
• There is no need for an explanation sentence
after
✓Main Idea
• Should come immediately after the TS
• Make sure you include the proper transition
markers (First, Secondly, Next, etc.)
• Can either stand on its own as a sentence, OR
merged together with the relevant evidence

The Rules Differ Slightly
✓ Evidence
• You must include a citation
• Can either stand on its own as a sentence, OR merged
together with the related main idea
✓ Explanation
• You cannot have citations in this sentence
• It is not necessary to have an explanation sentence for
every main idea + evidence
• For example, if there are a total of 3 main ideas → you
may have only one or two explanation sentences
• For example, if there are a total of 4 main ideas → you
may have only two or three explanation sentences
✓ Linking Sentence (LS)
• Only ONE sentence → the last sentence of the paragraph
• You are not allowed to have citations here → can be
rephrased from the question itself
