A Maths test was given to 150 Science students and 120 Business students. The mean
scores for the test for the Science and the Business students were 68% and 76%
respectively.

(a) Find the sum of all the scores for:

(i) the Science students,

(b) Find the mean score for all the 270 students. Give your answers to 3 significant figures.

(b) Assuming she sells all the necklaces, what is her profit margin? Give your answer to 1
decimal place. (3 marks)

(c) Simona may not sell all of the necklaces that she makes. How many necklaces does she
need to sell in order to break even? Assume that she has no other costs. Give your
answer to the nearest whole number. (3 marks)

In country A the first £7000 of a person’s salary is tax free, but the rest is taxed at 23%.
(a) If Clara earns £40 350 per annum, what would be her net income (her income after tax

(b) Adrian’s gross salary is £P.

(i) Write an expression, in terms of P, for the amount of tax he would pay. (1 mark)

(ii) If he pays £4600 in tax what is his gross salary £ P? (2 marks)

In country B income tax is a flat rate of 18% on a person’s total annual salary. Amy lives in
country A and earns £A per annum. Beatrice lives in country B and earn £B per annum.
(c) (i) Given that they both pay the same amount of tax, write an expression for A in
terms of B. (2 marks)

(ii) Given also that Amy earns £1000 more than Beatrice, find Beatrice’s annual salary.

(3 marks)
