A Detailed Lesson Plan in Assessment of Learning: Lesson 1

Prepared by: Group 1

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Define the term “assessment” and;
2. Explain its importance to students, teacher and in education
3. Create or design a sample summative assessment (e.g., quiz or short test) for a
specific topics

II. Subject Matter

III. Background Knowledge: According to what we read in this book, the lesson is
about understanding how to gather information about what students know and can do,
using various methods like tests, quizzes, and projects. It helps teachers understand
how well students grasp the material and where they might need help. It also involves
using different methods like tests, assignments, to gather information and make sure
teaching is effective. The goal in this lesson is to help the student and learn and
succeed.
IV. Procedure
A. Routinary Activities
 Greetings
 Prayer
 Introduction
 Discussion
 Reflection

Teachers Activity Students Activity

“Good morning, everyone” “Good morning, Ma’am”

“Before we proceed. let us pray first” (One student will lead the prayer)

“Please be seated. Arrange your chairs and sit (Students follows)

properly”

B. Review

Teachers Activity Students Activity

“Okay, before I start. Let me ask you. What did we (One student will answer)
do last meeting with this subject?

“Our instructor orient us about this subject and

“Okay. Thank you.” grouped us into 3 and he also assigned the topics of
each groups for reporting”

Is anyone here have an idea about our topic for

today? So, today we will be talking about (Students are listening)
Assessment”
C. Motivation

“Before I jump to my discussion, let’s have first a (Students are listening)

little refreshment. I have here an ice breaker. What
you will gonna do is to arrange the scrambled
words and read it out loud once you got the right
word. Ready?” “ASSESSMENT”

“First word: ASSMENTESS

“TESTING”
“Second word: ESTNGIT

“Third word: RGDAING “GRADING”

“Well done! Thank you for participating”

D. Lesson Proper

Teachers Activity Students Activity

“Now, let me ask you, class. When you heard the

word “Assessment?” what comes in to your mind?
Anyone?”
(Student answered)
(Teacher will pick 1 student)

“Okay, well done. Thank you for answering. So

fasten your seatbelt as I will discuss the first lesson.
Ready?”

“The word assessment, is rooted in the latin word

“assidere” which means “to sit beside another”. It is
generally defined as the process of gathering
quantitative and/or qualitative data for the purpose
of making decisions.

Meaning, assessment is like process of gathering (Students are listening)

information, evaluating, and measuring a student’s
knowledge, and make informed teaching decisions,
and guide learning outcomes. It is just a fancy word
for collecting information that help us decide
things, like what game to play, which job candidate
to hire, or how well students are learning in school.
It can be numbers or it can be descriptions,
depending on what you’re trying to figure out.

Assessment of learning can be characterized as: A

process, based on specific objectives, and from
multiple choices.
It is characterized as a process because, it is like
step-by-step procedure. It’s not a one-time thing, it
happens over time. It is based on specific
objectives because, it’s like checking wether you
achieved that goal. It’s about measuring your
progress against clear targets or objectives.
It is from multiple sources because it involves
gathering information from different places or
sources. In simple terms, assessment of learning is
like a step-by-step process that checks if you’ve
met specific goals by collecting information from
different places. It’s a way to see how well you’re
doing in school or in any activity where you have
specific objectives to reach.

How is assessment in learning similar or different

from the concept of measurement or evaluation of
learning? Measurement can be defined as the
process of quantifying the attributes of an object.
It is part of assessment. It’s like using a ruler or
scale to get precise number. Example in school, this
is often done with test and quizzes where you get a (Students are listening)
score or grade, which is a specific measurement of
your performance. Evaluation is process of making
value judgements on the information collected from
measurement based on specified criteria. It’s
making judgement about how well you’ve learned
something. Not only the scores you got but also
other factors like effort, participation, and the
quality of your work. They’re related but severe
slightly different purposes.

Assessment and Testing is the most common form

of assessment. It’s a formal check of what you
know. One of the tools we use for assessment to
collect information on student learning over
specific period of time. Assessment and Grading
process of assigning value to the performance or
achievement of a learner based on specified criteria
or standards. It’s giving a score or grade to the work
you’ve done, can be considered as a way to (Students are listening)
summarize how well you’ve performed in class or
specific task.

“Now, let’s proceed to The Different Measurement

Framework Used in Assessment. These are:
Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response
Theory (IRT). Classical Test Theory is also known
as the true score theory which explains that
variations in the performance of examinees on a
given measure is due to variations in their abilities.
Like example of Classical Test Theory (CTT), if a
students completes a numerical reasoning test, and
score is 16/20, their “observed” score is 16.

CTT provides an estimation of the following:

Item Difficulty and Item Discrimination. Item (Students are listening)
Difficulty is based on the frequency or number of
examinees who correctly answers a particular item.
Item Discrimination is based on the number of
examinees with higher or lower ability to answers a
particular item. Item Response Theory (IRT)
analyzes test items by estimating the probability
that an examine answers an item correctly or
incorrectly.”

“Now let’s move on to the Different Types of

Assessment in Learning. There are Six (6) types of
Assessment in Learning. These are: Formative
assessment, Summative assessment, Diagnostic
assessment, Placement assessment, Traditional
assessment, and Authentic assessment.

Okay, Formative assessment refers to assessment

activities that provide information to both teacher
and learners on how they can improve the teaching
learning process. Example of this are: quizzes, do (Students are listening)
homework, and participating in class. This is like
checking your progress while you’re learning
something new. It helps the student and teacher if
how they’re doing in the middle of a lesson or a
unit. It helps teachers make sure students are on the
right path, and if they’are not, it guides the teacher
on how to get them back on track. It’s either the
teacher will re-teach the lesson, try new strategies,
or adjust teaching as needed.

Summative Assessments are assessment activities

that aim to determine learner’s mastering of content
or attainment of learning outcomes. This explains
that this type of assessment are designed to measure
the students understanding of the course material or
their achievement of specific learning goals.
Summative Assessments are like a final test or
projects in school. Teachers use them to see how
well students did, but they also help teachers figure
out if their teaching methods are working. Students
also get feeback on what they did well and where
they need to improve for future.
(Students are listening)
Diagnostic Assessment aims to detect the learning
problems or difficulties of the learners so that
corrective measure or intervention are done to
ensure learning. This method is usually used by
teachers or educators to identify any difficulties or
challenges students might be facing in their studies.
It’s like a way to diagnose and understand what’s
going on with the students learning. They do this to
provide the right support/solutions to help the
students learn effectively. They use it when they
notice students struggling in class or at the start of
the school year to mak sure that every students has
what they need to learn well.

Placement Assessment is usually done at the

beginning of the school year to determine what the
learners already know or what are their needs that
could inform design of instruction. Example of this
is entrance examination. So, this is a test given at
the start of the school year to see what students
already understand and what they need to learn.
Once the test is done, students are grouped together
based on their results. In this way, teachers can
teach them in a way that helps everyone learn best,
either by focusing on what the students need to
improve or build up on what they already know.

Traditional Assessment refers to the use of

conventional strategies or tools to provide
information about the learning of students. It means
using standard methods to understand how well
students are learning. This is traditional in the sense
that they have a history of being the standard ways
to evaluate students’ knowedge and skills. These
assessment are common in the classrooms because
they’re simple to create and grade quickly. In spite
of that, some people think traditional assessments
aren’t very authentic or true to real-life skills.
Because they often focus on memorization, lack (Students are listening)
creativity, and don’t measure the practical abilities
like teamwork .

Authentic Assessment refers to the use of

assessment strategies or tools that allow learners to
perform or create a product that are meaningful to
the learners, as they are based on the real world
context. In simple term, authentic assessment is like
learning by doing real things instead of just taking
tests. It’s when students practice something in way
that is like what you do in real life. This assessment
aims to measure the real-world skills and abilities
in a practical and realistic context. Example,
cooking a meal. Instead of just reading a recipe in a
book, you actually cook a meal in the kitchen, just
like a chef. So, the only purpose of authentic
assessment is to make learning more meaningful,
engaging, and useful for students, and helping them
become more well-rounedand prepared for life
beyond school.

Now, let’s move on to the Different Principles in

Assessing Learning. There are many principles in
the assessment in learning. Based on the different
readings and references on these principles, the
following may be considered as core principles:

(1) Assessment should have a clear purpose. if

your gathering information or data make sure its
clear and informative.
(2) Assessment is not an end in itself. Assessment
refers to enhancement of learning skills that will
allow improvement of the student.
(3) Assessment is an ongoing, continous, and a
formative process. It means that you should not
focus on certain activity it should be a series task.
(4) Assessment is learner-centered. This method
is use to measure the effectiveness of lessontoward
the learners.
(5) Assessment is both process and product-
oriented.
(6) Assessment must be comprehensive and
holistic. Assessment should be perform using a
variety of strategies and tools designed to assess
student learning in a holistic way.
(7) Assessment requires the use of appropriate
measures. In order for you to measure the learning
of the student, you create an appropriate
assessment.
(8) Assessment should be as authentic as
possible. Be authentic reliable experience.
E. Generalization

“Okay, thank you.”

“This is the last question. So Ms. Manlambus, what “Evaluation is process of making value judgements
is evaluation?” on the information collected from measurement
based on the specified criteria. It’s making
judgement about how well you’ve learned
something.”
“Excellent! Thank you for answering those
questions. It just shows that you are listening and
paying attention in my discussion.”

F. Assessment

data for the purpose of making decisions. It
measures what students know and help guide their
education.)

“Number 2, what are the difference between (The difference between measurement and
