Safety and Communication Protocol for a Potential Threatening Situation After-Hours

This protocol is for custodial staff, or any district employees that work late shifts. Employee
safety is a top concern, particularly for anyone working alone, or at a nearly empty campus
after dark. It is important that all employees be aware of their surroundings while they move
around the campus, and alert to potential dangerous or threatening people or situations. If a
staff member feels their personal safety is at risk, they need to follow these steps.

1. Get to a safe place behind a locked door, if possible

2. Evaluate the situation:
a. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you sense danger. Follow your gut. If you are not
sure, go ahead and call 9-1-1
b. If you determine the threat situation, and immediate danger, has subsided
or passed, contact any other crewmembers on-site and alert them to the
situation. Then call the police non-emergency number to report the
incident:
i. Folsom Police: 916-461-6400 (select option #1)
ii. Rancho Cordova: 916.362.5115
Consider putting these numbers in your phone contacts.
3. Finally, make sure you report the incident to one of the operations managers:
a. Keith Elliott                      (916) 337-0922
b. Steve Cleveland               (916) 870-1945
c. Jim Bonovich                    (916) 870-0224

Custodial Staff Safety Check-in Reminder

It is district policy that all custodial staff check-in with their site supervisor, or other
crewmembers, before they leave campus. Ideally, all crewmembers should meet up at the end
of their shift at a pre-designated location. The on-site supervisor needs to account for all
crewmembers before they leave at the end of their shift. If you have a substitute custodian on-
site, remind them that they must also check-in before leaving.
