Pulsed Ytterbium Fiber Laser YLP-V2 Series User’s Guide

2 Description
YLP-V2 Series is advanced family of maintenance-free Q-switched pulsed Ytterbium
fiber lasers designed for OEM applications. These lasers deliver a high power 1.06µm
laser beam directly to the work piece via a flexible metal-sheathed fiber cable.
Collimated, and then typically focused to a spot size of a few microns, the near
diffraction-limited beam can mark, drill or machine a variety of materials.
YLP-V2 Series allows power scalability up to 100W in a small air-cooled package. It
provides a set of pulse durations, repetition rates and peak powers. The fiber based
design and rugged metal case allow these compact laser modules to operate under
industrial shock, vibration, dust and humidity in the temperature range from 0 to 42°C.
Pulse Energy and Optical Beam: The lasers emit optical pulses with energy up to 1mJ.
The average power can be scaled independently on the energy. Typical beam quality
M2 is less than 1.5. Output isolator ensures high output power stability and allows to
process reflective materials.
Interface: The laser is equipped with a fast digital control interface allowing direct
connection to the scanner control cards The laser does not require any external drivers
or additional intermediate boards for integration into a system.
Repetition Rate: The laser may be equipped with different types of master oscillators
allowing operation in wide pulse repetition ranges. The laser emits pulses
synchronously with pulse repetition frequency supplied by the control system to its
input.
Factory sealed YLP-V2 lasers can be embedded directly into micro-machining,
material processing and production marking systems with no need for after-
installation service. These lasers require no water-cooling or replacement parts. They
can be powered directly from a 24V power supply.

Pulsed Ytterbium Fiber Laser YLP-V2 Series User’s Guide

5 Compliance to regulatory requirements

Laser radiation hazards

The YLP-V2 series lasers are OEM components for integration or incorporation and
thus do not meet the requirements for a standalone laser system per IEC/EN 60825-1
and 21 CFR 1040.10. The system integrator is responsible to comply with all
regulatory requirements to the final laser system.

The laser is classified as a Class 4 laser product for invisible radiation per IEC 60825-
1:2014 and 21 CFR 1040.10. It emits up to 160 W (depending on model) of average
power in the wavelength range 1000-1200nm.

The aiming guide laser (red pointer) emits up to 1mW of average power in the
wavelength range 600-700nm and is classified as class 2M per IEC 60825-1:2014 and
21 CFR 1040.10.

EMC compliance
The YLP-V2 series lasers are subject to CE marking as being compliant with the
requirements of the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC when used as prescribed below. YLP-
V2 lasers have been designed and tested for compliance with the following EMC
standards*:
EN55022 cl. A:2010 Emission**
CISPR 22, cl. A Emission**
EN 61000-6-2:2005 Immunity
EN 61000-3-2:2006 + A1, A2:2009 Current Harmonics
EN 61000-3-3:2008 Flicker

Besides, YLP-V2 series lasers are compliant with U.S. Standard FCC part 15, cl.A
(Emission**).

*CE-labeled power supply and signal cables not longer than 3m should be used
**Radiated emission test passed with ferrite core Würth 742 712 21 (1 turn) on 24 VDC line near the
laser.

Functional safety
The laser contains two safety circuits with appropriate safety functions which simplify
the laser integration. One circuit is designed to safely stop the main laser emission;
the other is designed to limit the red guide laser power. Functionality of both safety
functions was verified according to DIN/IEC/ISO 13849-1:2008-12 and reached the
performance level D.

TO USE SAFETY FUNCTIONS they should be activated by setting appropriate

configuration bits in the firmware (may be user of factory settable) and environment
around the laser module housing covers and electrical connectors should be equivalent
to protection class IP54. Safety related circuits are located in the laser inner volume
and protection class requirement for this volume is IP54. There is no leakage form the

Pulsed Ytterbium Fiber Laser YLP-V2 Series User’s Guide

module heatsink volume to the laser inner volume and there are no special
requirements for heatsink air conditions.

Safely stopping of main laser emission

The laser contains electrical capacitors, which store the energy and may be a source
for the laser emission.

The laser incorporates an internal discharge circuit which safely discharges internal
capacitors within 200 ms (in case of failure within 400ms) after disconnecting the
main +24V supply line. After 200 ms no laser emission is possible.

The laser allows external discharge of internal capacitors by forced dropping the +24V
main supply voltage. In case the +24V line voltage is less than 0.5 V (relative to return
wire) no laser emission is possible. The customer is responsible for a discharge circuit
design and the voltage monitoring. Time to reach zero emission state with external
discharge circuit may be significantly reduced in comparison with built-in 200 ms
discharge circuit.

The laser +24V housekeeping line may be always powered. It does not affect the
functionality of the safety discharge circuit

In case of malfunction: the corresponding status bit is set both for activated and not
activated function. For the activated function commands to switch on the main
emission are disabled and the laser is permanently held in the “Laser is not ready for
emission” state.
Note: the function must be activated to enable functionality.

Limiting of red guide laser power

The laser contains a circuit for safely limiting the guide laser power to ensure that it
does not exceed AEL of class 2M laser product.

In case of malfunction: the corresponding status bit is set for both activated and not
activated function. For activated function commands to switch on the emission of the
red guide laser are disabled.
Note: the function must be activated to enable functionality.

6 Mounting
The laser should be mounted to a base plate via 4 holes in the housing (refer to the
drawings).

Fiber cable bending radius is 80mm, for installation short term bending with radius
down to 50mm is allowed.

The output head should be clipped to the mounting surface (refer to the drawing).

The isolated output head, especially for 50W and 100W models is heated by optical
power. The customer is responsible to cool the isolator to keep it within specified

Revision Date: 12.08.2015 Page 11 of 20

Pulsed Ytterbium Fiber Laser YLP-V2 Series User’s Guide

temperature range. The optimal isolator temperature (maximum isolation) is 25±10°C.

The head is made of bulk aluminum components; heat may be effectively removed
either from Ø 46mm or Ø 35mm cylindrical parts.

7 Environment conditions and precautions

CAUTION:
This device has an output optical head connected to the device by a fiber
cable. So please, be careful dealing with the output head.

CAUTION:
Always switch the laser off when working with the output head, e.g.
mounting the head into a fixture, viewing the end face with optical
instruments, etc.

CAUTION:
For collimated outputs, maintaining a clean output lens is essential.
Always close (re-cap) the collimator after use. Do not touch the output
lens and do not clean it with any solvents. Cleaning with lens tissue is
allowable as required.

CAUTION:
Do not expose the device to a high moisture environment.

CAUTION:
