Sodium Determination

Reagents:

Sodium Carbonate

Hydrochloric Acid

Bromocresol Green

Procedure

Standardization

1. Dry 2.0 g of pure Na2CO3 in a glass weighing bottle in the oven for 1 hour
2. Cool the Na2CO3 in a desiccator
3. Weigh by three 0.25-gram portion of the dry material into a clean 500 mL Erlenmeyer flasks.
4. Add 100 mL of distilled water to each sample of pure Na 2CO3 in the 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask and
swirl gently to dissolve the salt.
5. Add enough drops of Bromocresol Green indicator to one of the flasks so that a strong blue color
is observed.
6. Titrate with HCl solution to an intermediate green color
7. Boil the solution gently for 2 to 3 minutes
8. Cool the solution to room temperature and wash the inside walls of the flask with distilled water
from a wash bottle.
9. Titrate to the yellow endpoint. Titrate to the nearest half-drop
10. Replicate the titration.

Unknown

11. Add about 100 mL of distilled water to the unknown sample in the 500 mL flask and swirl gently
to dissolve the salt.
12. Add the enough drops of Bromocresol Green indicator to the flask
13. Titrate with the HCl solution to the intermediate green color
14. Boil the solution gently for 2 to 3 minutes
15. Cool the solution to room temperature and wash the inside walls of the flask with distilled water
from a wash bottle.
16. Titrate to the yellow endpoint. Titrate to the nearest half-drop
17. Replicate the titration.
