[1] Chauhan, who is 18 now, has just graduated


from VidyaGyan Leadership Academy (VGLA) in the state
of Uttar Pradesh, India. In September, he will fly to the
USA to study international relations. VGLA was founded
by Shiv Nadar to develop talent among poor rural children
in the state and to educate future leaders in India. “We
noticed that elite schools in other states were taking only
wealthy urban students. So, we set up VGLA in 2009,”
said the founder of the school.

[2] Chauhan passed VGLA’s admission test seven years ago, joining a limited number of rural
children to get high quality education. “Everything I have today and will ever have is because of
this school. I had never dreamed that I would ever leave my village,” Chauhan said.

[3] Malhotra, director of VGLA, says that the aim is to train men and women who can change their
communities and the country. School administrators search the whole state to identify poor and gifted
students. Their family’s income must be less than 100,000 rupees ($1000) a year. From the 250,000
applications every year, only 200 are accepted. The selection is very competitive.

[4] The first year at the academy can be tough on the students. Their social and communication
skills are often poor. Some come from disadvantaged backgrounds, others have health problems. “We
have to provide them with the latest information and knowledge quickly but without stressing them,”
Malhotra says.

[5] Amrish Nayak, 21, has just graduated from university in the US
and now works as a business analyst in North Carolina. “Without VGLA,
I would be working in my village today to support my parents,” he says.
The importance of giving something back is a value taught to students at
the school. They are encouraged to deal with issues of poverty and
women’s health in their community. “I get so many messages from
children saying “You’ve inspired us,” says Nayak. The seven years he
spent at the school have changed his life. So, he wants to help children in
his community to change their lives, too.
