BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOLOGY:

HISTOLOGY

Histology is defined as the study of the microscopic anatomy of a biological material and correlates
individual components in terms of structure and function. It is crucial in the study of the different
branches of science such as biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, physiology and disease processes.
To be able to understand physiology of the different organ systems that comprise a whole being, one
must first understand the microscopic anatomy and features of each tissue and structure of the body.
Since tissues are the building blocks of all structures in the body, understanding histology enables one
to understand functions of organs in the body.

The study of Histology began with the invention of the simple light microscope. This led to the discovery
of substantial amount regarding the structure of the living material. The development of modern
investigative techniques has enabled scientists to explore the molecular basis of biological structures.

In order to appreciate Histology, it is necessary to discern that this is a visual subject. Thus, this course
involves analyzing and understanding diagrams, real life pictures, illustrations and photomicrographs of
various tissues in the body.

HISTOLOGY studies the microscopic anatomy dealing

with the structures of cells, tissues and organs in
relation to their functions. The course discusses the
characteristic morphologies of various cell types,
cellular arrangements that form the four primary tissues
and the microscopic anatomy of various organs within
body systems. Functional correlations are also made
with selected abnormal tissues.
At the end of the course and given relevant actual or simulated situations/conditions, the students
will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the mission and vision of the institution and appreciated
Histology in relation to one’s course.

2. Explain the properties of cells and their interactions with one another as components of
tissues and organs.

3. Recognize and describe the characteristic structures of cells, tissues and organ systems of
the body at the light microscope histologic level and electron ultrastructure level

4. Understand the basic functions of various cell types, tissues and organ systems of the body
as correlated with their histological structures
