summary of Logistics Versus Supply Chain Management: An International Survey

The text is about the concept of supply chain management, SCM, and the relationship it has
with logistics. It prioritizes some perspectives such as the distinction between SCM and
logistics, where it includes traditionalist, relabeling, unionist, and intersectionist points of
view. All these perspectives shape how researchers and other people in charge of these
approaches to SCM.

The introduction of the text starts debating the confusion and lack of boundaries when
referring to SCM, due to this the design of educational programs and conducting research is
difficult. It also examines how SCM is related to logistics and presents four perspectives with
the text centers, these are.
• Traditionalists: it says that SCM needs to be out inside logistics, making it a small
part of it.
• Relabeling: this perspective simply changes the name of logistics to SCM, the
evolution of logistics is rebranding as “integrated logistics” or SCM which reduces its
scope to logistics.
• Unionist: SCM takes all part of logistics and other elements of the enterprise as
marketing, operations, and sales. It is seen as a large organizational strategy.
• Intersectionist: It sees SCM as a strategy that involves strategics and integrative
elements in different disciplines as logistics, marketing and operations, It is center on
crossed coordination and t makes the development of the supply chain better.

It also describes an international survey that was made for experts in logistics and SCM,
where they rated the importance of topics and different techniques for both SCM and
logistics. The results of the survey indicate that there were two fields with had very differing
perceptions, supporting the four perspectives models.

In conclusion, the paper emphasized the importance of clarifying the boundaries, the
perspectives and how the 4 pillars are part of both SCM and logistics. How can we
understand their relationship in order to effectively educate, research and apply SCM
principles.
