7 Cisco SD-WAN Overlay Routing

Summary

After completing this course, you will understand:

Overlay routing establishes a secure, virtual IP fabric across the WAN. The Cisco SD-WAN
solution is the OMP for exchanging routing, policy, and management information in the overlay
network. OMP uses address families to advertise reachability for TLOCs, unicast and multicast
destinations, service-side routes, and service routes for Layer 4 through Layer 7 services.
OMP advertises OMP routes, TLOCs, and service routes between WAN Edge routers and the
Cisco vSmart controller in the overlay network. OMP routes contain routing information from the
site-local networks. TLOC routes identify transport locations, and service routes advertise the
services available in their branch or campus.
OMP does not automatically redistributes routes that it learns locally or from its routing peers.
Connected, static, OSPFv2, OSPFv3, EIGRP, LISP, ISIS, and BGP routes must be explicitly
configured to be redistributed. When selecting routes, the Cisco vSmart controller and the WAN
Edge routers consider the origin type and subtype. The administrative distance is one parameter
used in the best-path algorithm, which is used to select the best route to a destination. VPNs are
network segments that are identified with the use of a VPN identifier that is propagated across
the network as a label.
OMP must be operational for the Cisco SD-WAN overlay network to function. Several OMP
operational commands can be used for proper OMP operation. To configure segmentation,
configure a service VPN, numbering between 1 and 511 or 513 and 65535. OSPF and BGP are
the only protocols besides static routes that can be configured for service-side routing. Overlay
routing can be verified with the use of several operational commands, depending on the
protocols that are configured.
