MATKAKERTOMUS.
Ei. Lukijan ei tarvitse, sen lupaan, rämpiä minun kanssani soita eikä
kapuilla kallioita, ei poudalla eikä sateella, eikä yleensä tietää
matkoistani, niiden vaivoista ja hankaluuksista, paljo mitään. Ne pidätän
itselleni omana huvinani. Epäilenpä suuresti ketä huvittaisi tietää mistä
me — sillä meitä oli kaksi, Erkki ja minä — milloinkin aamulla
lähdimme ja mihin illalla saavuimme ja minkälaisessa kunnossa
kulloinkin. Ketäpä huvittaisi tietää milloin jalan kulimme ja milloin
veneellä ja montako virstaa kummallakin pelillä, missä yötä oltiin, missä
syötiin ja mitä syötiin ja missä syöpäläiset meitä söivät?
PÄIVÄ SELKENI.
Niin oli tuhuuttanut senkin päivää, illan suussa oli vähän herennyt,
vaan taivas oli vieläkin harmajana ja raskaassa pilvessä. Tuuli oli yhä
vain kolkolla pohjoiskulmalla, eikä näyttänyt sieltä hellittävänkään.
Sinne se silmäili vähän väliä aina isäntäkin seivästä maahan takoessaan,
ja loi sitten taas vähintäkään toivon aihetta löytämättä nolostuneet
katseensa maahan.
Kun vielä pari kolme syltä aitaa oli syvässä äänettömyydessä saatu
pannuksi, viskasi isäntä kangen olalleen ja kirveen toiselle ja tuli
istumaan siihen samalle kivikasalle, jolla me lepäillen istuskelimme.
Hetken hän siinäkin ääneti istui, vaan sitten rupesi verkalleen puhumaan.
Tämän hän lausui aivan tyynesti niinkuin usein lausutun tutun jutun.
Istui siinä hetkisen maahan tähystellen ja paineli kannallaan tantereesen,
johon heti vesikolot syventyivät. Sytytti piippunsa ja jatkoi sitten
katsellen poispäin pitkin vainioitaan.
— Satele nyt taas viikon pari yhteen kyytiin, ja härnää sitten taas
puolen päivää poudalla. Mutta silloin minä sanon: ei tästä tule poutaa,
eikä tämä ole poutaa, tämä on vain sadetta, sitä yhtä samaa sadetta.
LENTIIRAN KIRKONKYLÄ.
ANNA LIISA.
Anna Liisa Heikkinen oli talon tytär, ja komea tyttö olikin, aivan
ensimmäisiä kuhmolaisen katsantotavan mukaan. Suora nenä ja hienosti
punehtivat posket tekivät hänen kasvonsa tosin poikkeuksiksi toisten
vertaistensa joukosta ja hänen rohkeassa katseessaan oli tavallista
enemmän eloa. Mutta vartaloltaan ja jäntereiltään hän oli juuri kuin
Kuhmon tytön pitää ollakin: tanakka ja luja. Rinnat eivät erittäin korkeat,
mutta pystyt ja pyöreät, joten väljä röijy niiden kohdalta suorassa
laskussa valahti alas, eivätkä ne näyttäneet pönkkiä tarvitsevan. Vartalo
ei ollut hoikka, leveä rintakehä jatkui yhtäsuorana vankkana vartena
lanteita kohden, jotka pullistivat hametta kahdenpuolen laajalle
kupeutuviksi kaariksi — semmoiset lanteet juuri kuin pitää olla sillä,
joka on luotu synnyttämään paljo ja terveitä lapsia.
Komea tyttö, talon tyttö, eikä vielä ollut naimisiin päässyt, vaikka jo
parinkymmenen ikään oli elänyt. Olisi tuon luullut miehen saavan, vaan
eipä ehkä ollut tainnut kaikista huoliakaan.
Hän vilkasi vielä kerran sinne Kaikkosen törmälle päin ja rupesi sitten
taas puhumaan tuosta Loviisasta, joka oli Helsingissä ollut.
— Minkätähden kummitukseksi?
