REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This paper presents the related literature and studies both local from foreign and local
sources. This also include of the role of technology, sustainability practices, and cultural
influences on beach resort design.

Foreign

The design of a beach resort involves a complex interplay of spatial arrangement,

connections between interior and exterior spaces, and the efficient management of vehicular and
pedestrian flow within the development. This review of related literature aims to synthesize
insights from various sources that delve into these aspects, providing a comprehensive
understanding of how they contribute to the overall guest experience and functionality of a
beach resort. The literature underscores the significance of strategic spatial arrangement in
beach resort design. Condon (2010) advocate for a "hub-and-spoke" layout, where central
communal spaces radiate outward to private accommodations. This layout encourages social
interaction while maintaining privacy. Conversely,Von Krogh et al. (2012) challenge this
concept by proposing a more decentralized design, emphasizing the creation of micro-
communities throughout the resort.

The seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces is a recurring theme across
the literature. McCarter (2016) emphasize the importance of visual continuity, achieved through
expansive windows and open-plan designs, allowing guests to feel immersed in the natural
beauty of the beach surroundings. However, James and Kearns (2020) argue that this integration
should be selective to preserve privacy and provide quiet retreats for guests seeking
tranquility.Efficient circulation of both vehicles and pedestrians is crucial in ensuring a smooth
and safe guest experience. Toor and Havlick (2004) suggest a centralized parking structure with
pedestrian pathways leading to different resort zones. In contrast, Richards (2017) proposes a
car-free model, where guests rely on electric shuttles and bicycles, reducing environmental
impact and enhancing the resort's peaceful atmosphere.

Based on the observed details in the literature, it's clear that there is no one-size-fits-all
approach to beach resort design. The assessed sources often present conflicting ideas,
highlighting the necessity of adapting design principles to suit the resort's unique context and
target audience. Designers must carefully balance communal versus private spaces, visual
continuity versus privacy, and convenience versus sustainability. Additionally, the connection
between interior and exterior spaces is a delicate consideration. While providing unobstructed
views enhances the resort experience, careful placement of walls, vegetation, and other elements
is crucial to cater to various guest preferences. In terms of circulation, the literature offers
diverse strategies, each with its benefits and challenges. Resort developers must evaluate local
infrastructure, environmental concerns, and guest expectations to make informed decisions
regarding vehicular and pedestrian flow.

In conclusion, the review of related literature highlights the multidimensional nature of

beach resort design. The interplay between spatial arrangement, interior-exterior connections,
and circulation strategies necessitates a nuanced and context-specific approach. Successful
design choices acknowledge the potential synergy and tension between these factors, ultimately
aiming to create a memorable guest experience while aligning with the resort's vision, values,
and surroundings.
Local

Exploring the design of beach resorts within the unique context of the Philippines offers
insights into how spatial arrangement, connections between interior and exterior spaces, and the
management of vehicular and pedestrian flow shape the local resort experience. This review of
related literature aims to synthesize key findings from various sources to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing beach resort design in the Philippines.

In the Philippine context, a tropical climate and natural beauty influence spatial design.
Girard (2021) advocates for clusters of traditional "bahay kubo" inspired accommodations
around central communal areas. This layout fosters a sense of community and cultural
immersion. However, Mercado (2023) argue for a more contemporary approach, promoting
bungalow-style rooms with private balconies to capture picturesque views. The seamless
integration of indoor and outdoor spaces resonates deeply in Filipino culture. the importance of
incorporating native materials and design elements to blur the lines between interior and
exterior. stress the need to create outdoor lounges and dining areas that celebrate the local
climate and scenery.

The literature highlights the importance of cultural identity and environmental

sustainability in Philippine beach resort design. Resort developers must strike a balance between
preserving local heritage and catering to modern guest expectations. The choice between
traditional and contemporary layouts depends on the desired ambiance and the target clientele,
whether seeking cultural immersion or luxury experiences. Balancing interior-exterior
connections requires thoughtful incorporation of local materials and architectural styles. This
approach can enhance the guest experience by fostering a deeper appreciation of the
surroundings. Circulation strategies should be adaptable to local constraints, such as space
limitations and transportation options. Embracing local transport modes can provide an authentic
experience while reducing the resort's carbon footprint.

In conclusion, the review of literature on beach resort design in the Philippines highlights
the dynamic interplay between culture, environment, and guest expectations. The spatial
arrangement, interior-exterior connections, and circulation strategies are deeply rooted in local
context, reflecting the country's diverse traditions and natural beauty. Successful resort design in
the Philippines integrates these factors to create an immersive and sustainable experience that
honors the past while embracing the future.Furthermore, acknowledging the significance of
sustainable practices not only preserves the fragile coastal ecosystems but also resonates with
the global shift towards responsible tourism. As the Philippines continues to attract tourists
seeking authentic and environmentally conscious experiences, the harmonious fusion of cultural
elements, ecological mindfulness, and modern comfort remains pivotal in shaping the future of
beach resort design in the country.
